* 4:11 - "Algemeen Nederlands" - This term means "Standard Dutch." Standard Dutch is used for public and official purposes, including instruction in schools and universities. Standard Dutch is quite uniform across Belgium and the Netherlands, though the accent, intonation and small vocabulary differences are indicative of where a speaker comes from.
Standard Dutch consists of two varieties: "Netherlandic Dutch" ("Nederlands-Nederlands", informally known in Flanders as "Hollands") as used in the Netherlands, and "Flemish Dutch" ("Vlaams-Nederlands" or "Belgisch-Nederlands") as used in Belgium.
Bear in mind that when people talk about "Flemish", they either refer to the standardized variety of Flemish Dutch, or spoken informal Flemish, which consists of a great number of dialects, regionalects and "tussentaal." Tussentaal literally translates to "in between language", referring to its position between dialect and standardized Flemish Dutch.
The old name for Algemeen Nederlands is "Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands", meaning "General Cultured Dutch". It's too complex to go into the history here, but it does say something about the elevated social status that was previously attributed to Standard Dutch.
As a general indication, in this video you can hear various types of Flemish Dutch. Nout speaks Standard Flemish Dutch almost all of the times whereas most of the interviewees speak variations of Flemish, from dialect (like West Flemish) to tussentaal. As you can imagine, people that spoke dialect were harder to transcribe: in our transcriptions, we tried to find the middle ground between the language as spoken and legibility. This also meant that we sometimes had to sacrifice certain smaller exclamations or subject-verb links which you don't have in written language and which, if transcribed, would make the Dutch subtitles quite difficult to follow or understand.
* 9:18 - poepen - This is a bit complicated but in tussentaal, it means "to have sex" whereas in standardized Netherlandic Dutch, it means "to poop".

As a Flemish person myself, I always compare Flemish Dutch and Dutch Dutch with American English and British English. They're both the same language, but each country has their own pronunciation, along with regional dialects and their own culture that shapes the language. And just like English and American people have different words for the same thing (eg in English you have 'boot' and 'trunk', in Dutch 'betalen met bancontact' and 'pinnen'). People will generally understand one another well unless they're speaking a certain regional dialect. Expressions and words may differ and sometimes we laugh it off like 'wtf does that mean?' but other than that and the different pronunciation, both standardized versions of Dutch are very similar.

Indeed a good comparison. I made the mistake once to tell somebody from Flanders that you cou argue that Flemish could be a separate language. It was me very clearly explained that Flemish is as Dutch as the Dutch language in the Netherlands. Never made that mistake again.

@@Hensepens64 and honestly, Flemings are to blame. I see my fellow Flemings correcting people online saying something was actually Flemish and not Dutch, using the term Flemish themselves all the time online whilst in our own country we say Nederlands (Dutch) and rarely Vlaams (Flemish) when referring to the language, so I find this phenomenon to be really strange. Why propagate the use of Flemish on international platforms/boards but just sticking to Dutch in your own country.

I feel like one major difference is the strong French influence on Flemish (as you could clearly hear in this video as well), which we don't really have in "normal" Dutch. When I was a kid, I used to watch Ketnet (Belgian TV for Kids) sometimes, and I always noted Belgians really like to say "voila" and "allez". To me, Flemish has always sounded really elegant.

But , know that mannequin, iceberg, babelutte, garçon, case , ...and about 30 % of French words originate in old dutch, which was in early the eigth century already in a form that can be easily understood till today, as a central brabantian dialect...exactly the same manner to write exactly the same words in Leptines and in Utrecht. It is not modern dutch, but easy to understand...It is not "supposed old dutch" in a skandinavian tongue written on a sword in rhunes of the fifth century ( nobody who speaks dutch is able to understand the meaning, even the linguist have very different "translations".....The prayer of Leptines/Utrecht is in the tongue of the court of Charlemagne ( in Leptines of his brother Carloman ) and even has not to be translated...Read it loud, listen en you do understand it, more easy than Nnwfch ( Ninove) or Deinzisch of nowadays....And you don't need french and english dictionnaries as you will need to try to understand modern "intellectual" dutch of Amsterdam...( that "intellectual" that half of their imported words ... don't have the original meaning... but that, I don't think that those ill-proud idiots do understand it.... )...

As a Dutch person, I think Dutch from the Netherlands is a lot less influenced by the French language. Not only in vocab, but also in the way how they speak. Dutch from Belgium is a lot softer, while Dutch from the Netherlands is clearer and louder. I am always fascinated by Flemish words, and it's always cool to see how your language is spoken so differently in Belgium.

I guess the channel is aptly named, since I could understand almost everything without having ever learned Dutch Dutch/Flemish Dutch. I’m a Swiss-French speaker, but I speak English, German and Swiss-German fluently. The latter 3 combined really seem to help to understand! I love how Flemish casually drop French words now and then, we Swiss-French do the same with German/Swiss-German words too. I also like how Flemish Dutch sounds softer than Dutch Dutch.

Wenn mann platt Deutsch kann verstehen, dann ist Niederlandisch nicht schwerig zu verstehen (und vice versa). Ich bin ein Niederlander und lebe in die nehe von die grenze, und Deutsch zu verstehen ist leicht (schreiben ist wass anderes, aber ich glaube es ist zu verstehen). Blijkbaar zien de meeste Vlamingen (in deze video) het Nederlands uit Nederland als één dialekt of één variant, terwijl de dialekten in Nederland zeer uiteenlopend zijn. Gronings, Brabants, Limburgs, Amsterdams, Zeeuws, Twents (enz) lijken totaal niet op elkaar. Veel Nederlanders kunnen de verschillende dialekten ook moeilijk verstaan. Waarschijnlijk kennen de Vlamingen alleen het Nederlands van de Nederlandse televisie. Omgekeerd geldt het overigens ook. Voor de meeste Nederlanders is Vlaams één dialekt.

Klopt. Ik denk zelfs dat Nederland.een groter bereik aan dialecten heeft, mede dankzij het Nedersaksisch taalgebied dat in België geen equivalent heeft. Nederlands op TV komt vaak uit Amsterdam en 't Gooi en dat staat ook vrij ver van veel Nederlanders af. Zelfs binnen de Randstad is er een flink bereik in accenten en ook in woordenschat. Wel is mijn indruk dat Nederlanders gemiddeld veel beter zijn in het spreken van algemeen Nederlands. En je merkt ook qua woordenschat wel een duidelijke scheiding tussen beide landen. Desondanks is het natuurlijk gewoon een taalgebied en de grens lijkt met de decennia wel te vervagen door wederzijdse invloed via met name social media.

Het Limburgs is een regionale taal

@@thomash7294 Dialect is gewoon een synoniem voor streektaal. Taalkundigen maken dit onderscheid niet. Alleen in de volksmond wordt wel vaak dialect als lager gezien maar dat slaat eigenlijk nergens op. Alle talen vormen onderdeel van een continuüm. Als je naar de oostgrens van Nederland gaat dan hoor je steeds meer Duitse elementen. Ga je naar de zuidgrens dan hoor je steeds meer Vlaamse elementen. Het enige waar die grens voor zorgt is dat mensen aan weerszijden ervan in een andere standaardtaal onderwijs krijgen en dat geldt natuurlijk voor de grens met Duitsland dan in veel grotere mate dan voor de grens met België. Nederlands Limburg en Belgisch Limburg wordt door Limburgers zelf vaak als een eenheid ervaren ondanks dat er een landsgrens doorheen loopt. Dat heeft evidente historische redenen maar je hoort tussen mensen in beide delen vaak ook niet zo snel verschil als zij de streektaal spreken. Los van de gebruikelijke lokale verschillen dan die je sowieso altijd hebt van plaats tot plaats. Het Limburgs heeft een eigen woordenschat en grammatica en voldoet daarmee prima aan het label dialect dan wel streektaal. Dit geldt voor het Twents net zo. Ik heb zelf als Rotterdammer lang geleden in Limburg gewoond en ik kan de meeste varianten prima verstaan. Ik heb ook in België gewoond en daardoor heb ik ook geen problemen met Antwerps en West Vlaams om maar wat te noemen. Je ontwikkelt er een gevoel voor zeg maar. Maar ik ervaar alle dialecten wel echt als Nederlandstalige dialecten. Met Duits heb ik opmerkelijk veel meer moeite. En overigens ook met het Fries, dat ook verder van het standaard Nederlands afstaat omdat het toch een geheel eigen geschiedenis heeft en al veel langer in Nederland gesproken wordt dan het Nederduits om het zo maar te noemen. Tot 2 eeuwen geleden zeiden mensen in Nederland nog dat ze Duits spreken. In de loop der tijd is het Nederlands echter zover afgeweken van het Duits dat het uiteindelijk een geheel eigen taal werd. Het Duits staat voor mij gevoelsmatig te ver weg om met een korte periode goed luisteren even op te pikken. Daar is het toch te verschillend voor.

Jij kan dus Limburgs goed verstaan en Fries dan bijvoorbeeld minder maar andere mensen hebben dit precies andersom. Maar ik zou het Limburgs eerder een streektaal noemen dan het Twents. Om als voorbeeld te noemen wat de talen in het Koninkrijk zijn. De officiële taal is het Nederlands. De officiële regionale talen zijn het Engels, Papiamento en het Westerlauwers-Fries. En de herkende talen zijn het Nederlands Nedersaksisch (waaronder het Twents valt), Sinti-Romanes, het Jiddisch en het Limburgs. In dat opzicht is het Limburgs unieker dan het Twents.

@@thomash7294 Ik begrijp niet zo goed waarom je er Engels en andere talen bij haalt want dat zijn in Nederland geen officiële voertalen. Dat geldt uiteindelijk voor slechts 2 talen namelijk het algemeen Nederlands in heel Nederland en het Fries in Friesland. De overige regionale of streektalen worden allemaal erkend maar niet gebruikt voor officiële zaken. Ik zou ook niet weten waarom het Limburgs 'unieker' zou zijn dan het Nedersaksisch. Laatstgenoemde taalgebied is binnen Nederland veel groter dan het Limburgs taalgebied en als we Duitsland erbij nemen dan strekt het zich nog veel verder uit. Als je met uniek bedoelt dat er veel minder sprekers van het Limburgs zijn dan klopt dat wel.

I’m Colombian, so a native Spanish speaker too. I learned Dutch (from The Netherlands) when I moved to The Netherlands and my level is now practically native. It’s funny though that a few times in the past I’ve had Dutch people ask me if I was from Belgium because of the softness of my Spanish influence, apparently it gives my Dutch a “Flemish”-like vibe. Most of the time though people don’t even realize I’m not a native Dutch speaker when I speak to them.

It’s like destiny or something! I have been following this channel for about 5 years now (i was studying Russian before). Then when I started dating by Flemish boyfriend, I was pretty surprised to see that there was no “easy Dutch” in here, and whenever I searched for Flemish-related content on youtube it was close to impossible to find anything relevant. Then just as soon as I made the decision to start learning Dutch so I could move with him to Belgium, they launch these Easy Dutch series 🙌🏽

Ik ben zo’n Nederlandse met een Vlaamse voorouder. Zonder hem bestond ik niet. Hij kwam in de tijd van Napoleon naar Egmond in Noord Holland. Zo zijn er ook veel Belgen met Nederlandse voorouders. Wij Nederlanders vinden het Vlaams vaak hart-verwarmend en zacht. We vinden vaak ook dat we in Nederland te snel een Engels woord eigen maken terwijl daar in het Vlaams een Nederlands woord voor wordt gebruikt. Behalve ‘job’ hoor ik weinig Engelse woorden in het Vlaams. Mijn schoonzus is van origine Brusselse, dus ik hoor het vaak en graag gesproken. Ook in Nederland hebben wij veel dialecten. Ik spreek van oorsprong West-fries, dit is waarschijnlijk een overblijfsel van het echte Fries een taal verwant aan het Engels en het Deens. De Vlamingen zijn vaak beter in het Frans en de Nederlanders in het Duits. Dit viel mij op bij mijn internationale werk met Belgische collega’s. Laten we trots zijn op al onze dialecten in de Lage-landen. 🤩

With my notions of dutch, batavian dutch and flemish dutch is like urugayan spanish and argentinian spanish. Flemish in phonetic is very frenchized, musical, tonal phonetically explaining plus regional dialects of Belgium, very neolatine in speech sound. On the other side batavian dutch on Netherlands is loud and clear, fast, pratical, vocalic and strong, englished, frisianized, phonetically more germanic plus regional dialects on Netherlands. The idiom is the same dutch, the slangs, proverbs, tales, dialects are very disctintives, different on each province that you count inside of 2 countries. The use and the variations of dutch in two nations are differents.🤙🤙🤙🤙🍻🍻🍻🫂🫂🫂🫂

As an English speaker just listening to dutch you can pick up a a number of the words, thats spoken. But soon as I see it written in dutch it's very surprising how much easier it is. Hoe leuk zou het zijn om dan nog eens met hetzelfde interview in Nederland de straat op te gaan! Groot verschil is dat Nederlands heel veel engelse woorden heeft geïmporteerd en dat vlamingen dat veel minder dien volgens mij. En bijvoorbeeld de betekenis van het werkwoord moeten wordt in het vlaams nogal anders gebruikt dan hier in Nederland. Moeten in het vlaams heeft meer de betekenis van “eventueel” en in het Nederlands meer “echt nodig”

Slabbetje is gewoon een normaal woord in Nederland hoor haha! Leuk dit. Enigzins verbazingwekkend dat men Jus d'orange zo grappig vond, aangezien vlaams juist veel meer franse leenwoorden heeft (bon, amai, nondedju etc etc). Verder was het ook wel interessant om te horen dat sommige vlamingen Nederlands mooier vonden! Standaard nederlands is toch wel vrij hard, zelfs voor mij als Haarlemmer. Ook heeft niemand het over gelders, zeeuws, brabants en limburgs - toch al snel, wat, 40% van Nederland. Die accenten/dialecten/talen sluiten veel dichter aan bij varianten van vlaams en standaard vlaams. Zachtere G, meer gelijk woordgebruik (amai!), zangeriger.

I am Afrikaans (South African Dutch) and can have a full conversation with my Flemish frieind who lives near Brussels with him speaking standard Flemsih and me speaking standard Afrikaans. Your ear first get use to the different way of pronouncing words and then it becomes easier and easier to communicate. The way you speak in your KZbin films are also 100% understandable but if older people start speaking in dialect, I can't understand at all. It sounds like a different language then. The Netherlands, also same thing. Depending on accent and dialect. So yes I think this is interesting. What is considered a seperate language and what is considered a dialect is still very much discussed even today.

As someone else already pointed out. Dialects in the Netherlands are just as diverse as in Flanders. Many Dutch people speak very differently than what is heard from TV and several regional dialects would not be understood by standard speakers. Frisian is famous for being recognized as an independent language. But there is also low-Saxon and Limburgish, which kind of form the buffer region between Dutch and German. There is Brabantian which flows over into the Flemish dialects. I will say one thing though: West-Flemish (what was spoken in the video) is one of the most difficult dialects to understand. Not only for Dutch people but also for Belgians.

When I lived in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen very near to the border with Belgium as a kid, I learned the word "Pimpampoentje" for ladybug. It seems that Flemish people know this word, but Dutch people don't, the Dutch word being "lieveheersbeestje".

I live in Suriname where the official language is also Dutch. The vocab is almost similar, but the accent is way different that the Dutch from the Netherlands. I also find Dutch Dutch more understandable than Flemish Dutch.

I found the dialects (Vlaamse) interesting both lexically, grammatically and phonetically. And they sound beautiful. Algemeen Nederlands sounds more 'maritime' (as North Sea Vikings' one, I imagine the Vikings settled in Scotland or Ireland, or Columbanus' 12 disciples), while the Flemish is just more continental. I think it is important for a language to have two hypostases, two faces. The lady at 3:30 is a very interesting example, it is a very complex language that she was speaking. It is a great project, I wish you to continue.

Love this video. Sadly only from a Belgium point of view. Personally I love Flemish and I have to speak it too in my job! The huge differences in dialects you also have in Holland. But a Belgium person hearing Dutch people speak Dutch are not aware of that. We are two small countries sharing a very difficult language with an enormous variety of dialects on both sides of the border. Allez, lets be proud of that!

Super interessant en leuk! Heb in het Nederlands leren lezen en schrijven (gealfabetiseerd) als kind, in een niet Nederlandssprekende omgeving (Caribisch Nederland, Aruba), dus alleen als onderwijs-technischetaal. Thuis werden twee andere talen gesproken, maar dankzij het Nederlands kon ik verder studeren tot en met de Universiteit. En ja, ik versta en vind alle variaties van het Nederlands mooi: Nederland, België, Suriname, Caribisch Nederland en zelfs het Afrikaans kan ik een beetje volgen. Elke variatie is mooi met eigen charme, uitspraak, intonatie en woordenschat. Het Nederlands is niet mijn moedertaal want ik maak nogsteeds fouten, maar het is een onderdeel van mijn levenservaring.

Flemish definitely comes less ‘from the throat’, as the most remarkable difference. I understand Flemish way better from hearing than the Netherlands Dutch.

interesting! Since they do have the tendency to abbreviate many words (that are written out officially, but pronounced very differently). Some dutch accents also do this, but generally it's not so common. Also most sounds are less pronounced, less distinct (e.g. the soft G being one). I think it sounds cuter, but I am surprised to hear it's easier to understand for you!

I am so happy that I watched this video only now, 1 year after I started to learn Dutch and after I watched almost all other videos on this channel. It's so hard to understand Flemish!! I felt some people in this video speak absolutely another language :) But Nout, for instance, speaks absolutely normally (thanks for it :)). El acento flamenco es más conservador! De "Randstad" uitspraak is sterk beïnvloed door het Fries en later, via de tv ook door het Engels. Zo is die vreselijke "Gooise r" dankzij de omroepen de standaard uitspraak onder Nederlandse jongeren en mensen tot ca. 35 jaar geworden: "vooɹ" in plaats van (oude) standaard /Vlaams "voor". Daarentegen verspreidt de typisch "Franse" uvulaire r zich snel in Vlaanderen.

Een Easy Dutch kanaal! Wat leuk :) Ikzelf als Nederlander merk een duidelijk verschil tussen de accenten van Nederlanders en Belgen. Ik kan de meeste Belgen wel goed verstaan, maar soms moet ik een beetje wennen en soms versta ik bepaalde dingen niet goed. Nederland en België hebben bovendien ook veel verschillende accenten binnen het land zelf, dus dat maakt het ook niet makkelijker! Gelukkig zijn die accenten wel vaak begrijpbaar voor iedereen die het Nederlands beheerst. Ik heb het idee dat Belgen Nederlanders beter verstaan dan andersom, omdat Belgen vaker Nederlandse televisieprogramma's kijken (zoals tekenfilms) en daardoor al aan het Standaardnederlands gewend zijn. Nederlanders horen zelden het Vlaamse accent daarentegen. (Overigens een tip voor de makers van het filmpje: ik zou dingen als "euh" weglaten in de ondertiteling! Het maakt de ondertiteling moeilijk om te lezen.)

@roelen Sorry, I keep mixing other languages I try to learn, I know that but somehow Frisian got into my mind and I misplaced the t. Sorry and thanks for warning. As for the Dank and the pronoun 'je' being written separately, I've been told it could be either way, is it wrong then? Anyway, although I find Flemish much softer, I simply cannot understand it when natives speak, too fast and too much clipping of words, no way my ageing brain can get that, woof. From what I noticed, it's the same as that Dutch variety spoken in the north of France, simply unintelligible, I couldn't follow the spoken words in their written forms at all.

I think Flemish is easier to understand for a German because it's a bit closer to the proto-germanic, as for the Dutch Verhoeven has in his movie is closer to the modern Dutch with influences of the English language. What is also interesting is the dialect used by both Germans and Dutch people at the border is so close they can both understand each other with ease. The Germanic language is so interesting, as a Dutchie i can almost understand some Scandinavian languages :) ( still failed my German sadly, the grammar is so hard and so many words are false cousins :p)

YES! I've been watching Easy German even though I'm learning Dutch and I hope this continues. Also, I think the best way to describe flemish dutch vs dutch is like american vs british english. When written down, everything the same except for some small differences buty ou can still read everything. But when listening, they have a different accent that can be hard to understand at times, especially if they speed up.

To some degree that's true, but I would say that that's not the whole story. There's also a substantial amount of grammatical differences between American and British English which you just don't have with Belgian Dutch and Netherlandic Dutch. The grammatical differences between the two standardized variations are limited to a very specific instance of verb positions in subclauses. Just to point out, it's really hard to make comparisons between languages or the relationship between individual standardized language varieties. :-) And I also don't want students to think that the differences are AS big between standardized Belgian and Netherlandic Dutch as they factually are between American and British English. On a standardized level, the differences between the two varieties really are minor.

I'm a Frenchman who's been living in Belgium for over 20 years. Though I live in the French-speaking part of the country, I did end up informally learning some Dutch, or rather Flemish Dutch. I can more or less understand the Flemish (provided they don't use a local dialect), but I usually don't get a word if confronted to a Netherlands speaker - as if they spoke a totally different language.

Ik heb in Nederland en in België gestudeerd. In Nederland spreken de studenten het algemeen gangbare Nederlands met elkaar ook al spreken ze thuis in dialect. In België spreken studenten onderling in dialect ook al kunnen ze Algemeen Nederlands spreken. Vlamingen voelen zich ongemakkelijk bij het spreken van Algemeen Nederlands (te formeel en te afstandelijk). Nederlanders voelen zich ongemakkelijk bij dialect (komt dom over ofwel plaats je je buiten de groep).

Very interesting video. I always thought that Flemish and Dutch were two different languages, but in fact they are not, as you said. From what I understand, the differences sound comparable to say, the south of England and areas of Scotland such as Glasgow; we both speak English, but the pronunciation of words is dramatically different, and we use some different words for the same things.

alles onder de noemer van diversiteit ... ik heb 28 jaar als Vlaamse logopediste gewerkt in Nederland en ben dus wel degelijk een expert op dat vlak - taal is deel van je persoonlijkheid en ik kan me kapot ergeren aan het over-correct spreken, zeker als het gaat over Vlaamse series met een 'internationaal' imago ... gelukkig zijn we wat dat betreft uit ons minderwaardigheidscomplex, door het toe te laten als variatie op een standaard, die weinig natuurlijk overkomt, hebben we eigenlijk een veel rijkere taal ... mijn oudste kind sprak zuiver AN toen hij jong was, zo 'natuurlijk' is AN voor mij, maar tegenwoordig vind ik het heerlijk om dat wat ik mooi vind toe te voegen aan mijn repertorium en het was juist die speciale toets, die ze in Nederland te gek vonden, dus is dat de moraal van het verhaal, men mag horen waar je vandaan komt, zolang het maar geen stigma wordt - dat ik na 28 jaar koudweg aan de deur gezet werd door mijn Nederlandse werkgevers, is een ander verhaal en geloof me dat dit een deel van het grotere verhaal is, de ONTVOOGDING van Vlaanderen ... een paar leuke uit eigen stal - de aftrekker noemen ze in Nederland een wisser of een trekker ... een bokaal is een trofee en geen glazen pot ... bij het woord beenhouwer worden ze vegetarisch (zij noemen dat slager) en toen ik er begon te werken (1982) verstond een collega me niet - ik spraak te NETJES ... trouwens, op een Amerikaanse kaart las ik Holland in plaats van Nederland en dat zegt veel over de ware aard - Vlamingen zijn ECHT heel anders dan Nederlanders en, terwijl wij in Vlaanderen het meestal 'netjes' houden, verpakken Nederlanders het in een verkeerd soort van 'grapje' - hoe vaak ik heb moeten horen of ze in België dan geen logopedisten nodig hadden (bedoeld als retorische vraag) ... nu ik fulltime in Vlaanderen ben, ben ik van mijn moedertaal gaan genieten en daar mag al eens een hoek van af zijn, zolang men de 'boodschap' maar begrijpt!!!

Ik kom uit Twente en ik heb ongeveer 10 jaar in Antwerpen en Westmalle gewoond, volgens my is het verschil tussen Vlaams and Hollands vergelijkbaar aan het verschil tussen het Twents en het Hollands. Hollands is voor mij de taal in Noord en Zuid Holland.
