Als Nederlander denk je natuurlijk dat deze vragen raar zijn, en dat ze over menselijk gedrag gaan, niet over Nederlandse maatschapij. Maar veel mensen van andere landen of culturen willen graag niet zo direct als Nederlanders zijn. Bijvoorbeld ze dienen liever een klacht in dan iemand confronteren. Ook in niet elke cultuur worden de regels zo strikt als hier gevolgd. Mijn KNM exam bevaatte een vraag over wat je moet doen als je tegenkomt met een man die een jurk draagt! Het juiste antwoord: heelemal niks. Mar dit is niet overal waar :( Ook veel vragen over de zorgverzekering en apotheken. Handig!

I think these questions indicate that there are rules which Dutch people expect others to follow, even if they don’t follow them themselves. And many Dutch people take great pleasure in pointing out perceived rule infractions. That has been my experience. And other countries are not like that, in my experience.

Hi, Kim. I haven't been watching your channel very long as I am taking in-person Dutch lessons, but this video intrigued me. I do understand why you are puzzled by these "is this Dutch? or is this just humanity?" scenarios. I am in my 50s and have lived half my life in the USA and half in the UK and I'm a frequent visitor to the Netherlands. I can assure you that the Dutch do indeed approach inter-personal issues differently from Americans and the British! Considering all of these questions, I can tell you what Americans would do, what the English (and Scottish, Welsh and Irish) would do and yes, the Dutch do have a different mindset! I hate stereotypes but this really does come down to the (in)famous Dutch directness. Brits and Americans are passive aggressive through and through (and I can say this, being a dual national!) and would almost never deal with confrontation *at source* the way the Dutch more typically do. So I agree with other commenters here: people wanting to integrate into Dutch society do come from all over the world, where the oil that keeps their societies turning may not be anything like the Dutch thinking. I think these are very valuable questions to be on the KNM exam and even more importantly, very important issues for newcomers to be mulling over, observing in their neighbourhoods, towns and workplaces, and having conversations with Dutchies about, in order to really integrate. This is about so much more than language! As you rightly say - children are taught the rules of their own society from a young age. But not every society has the same rules. ;) Your own parents did such a great job inculcating Dutch societal norms in you that you are not even aware that you have them. Also - maybe you should travel more??! Or at the very least follow KZbin channels by people from outside the Netherlands who share their "culture shocks" from living in the Netherlands. A lot of Dutchies watch these channels and comment a lot (I mean, a lot, a lot!) about how they never even knew that Dutch society is different in certain ways from elsewhere in the world.

Yes I totally get where you and some others here are coming from, and I also see that more clearly now. However, the name of the exam is still a bit misleading then and I think some of the questions are still very ambiguous, even for me as a Dutch person, for example if you are going to move into your apartment, I think both answers are correct to either inform the neighbors or to just don’t say anything. Or the one about the waiting room where you cannot call, I mean, even answer C “going outside” is not the best option because you could miss the doctor who wants to call you into his office. So I still have my doubts about some of these questions ;-)

As someone who had to take this exam I find your reaction really validating, thanks! I passed it answering the questions by keeping it mind "I am expected to follow the rules and doe normaal and more submissive in the situations where a Dutch person might not be" even though I didn't believe any of it.

American here that passed the exams almost four years ago and I must say that KNM exam was quite entertaining. I could not contain my laughter during the exam which was a slight distraction for others in the test center lol. During preparation for the real exam, I took a practice test and discussed the questions/answers with my Dutch wife which made her have a few "what the hell" moments 😄. Luckily, I had been married to a Dutchie long enough to be quite familiar with the culture at the time of taking the exam. There are some cultural nuances people just have to learn from experience . Good luck to those buitenlanders still in pursuit of this. 🦾

Propably I understand why those questions were like that. To the Netherlands come people from the whole world and propably some behavior for us( i mean european) might be diffrent to people from other continent.Some people behave wrongly, not because they don't respect rules, but because they raise in a different reality, so some rules seem strange to them.

Voor een Nederlander is het m.i. wel handig dat je weet hoe een provinciebestuur is samengesteld en werkt. Tenslotte beïnvloeden besluiten jouw leven in de provincie. De democratie werkt beter als iedere Nederlander zich dat meer bewust zou zijn. Dus ook voor Mensen die Nederlander willen worden!

In het academiejaar '10/'11 deed ik een ba-na-ba (Zorgverbreding en remediërend leren) om weer aan de slag te kunnen binnen het onderwijs (want daar lag dan toch mijn hart) ... ik ben van opleiding logopediste en, alsof dat een soort van vloek is, ook nu moest ik aanvullende lessen volgen, alsof ik in die 28 jaar op het (Nederlandse) veld niks had opgestoken ... toen ik voor mijn tweede assessment Didactiek een 4/20 scoorde, wist ik dat er geen redden aan was en ging het licht uit ... Wat heeft dit met een Inburgeringsexamen te maken, zal je denken, maar het antwoord zal meer kwaad bloed zetten dan nodig is, we zijn nu eenmaal super slecht in het beoordelen van anderen en koppelen er altijd een soort van straf aan, om het erdoor te drukken. Dat jaar 2011 blijkt nu op een zevensprong geëindigd te zijn - heel veel potentie, maar niet in de juiste kweekvijver en (buiten het feit dat ik nu als een 'arme' moet leven (iemand die al blij mag zijn als er iets naast de mand valt), heeft het een helende werking gehad en de psychologie daarachter maakt me meer waard dan een pas afgestudeerde student met NT2 als expertise. Toen er niemand anders was, 'mochten' logopedisten ook dyslexie en dyscalculie aanpakken, maar daar hebben de ba-na-ba opleidingen een stokje voor gestoken en nu blijkt zelfs mijn kennis over alles wat met het leren zelf te maken heeft, geen meerwaarde te hebben. In de Boomgaardstraat is er een NT2 opleiding, op een scheet afstand van waar ik woon, maar men heeft me nooit uitgenodigd, want ik heb de opleiding (die ahw op mijn lijf geschreven stond) niet gehaald omwille van een 2/20 en een 4/20 voor een voortraject, waar ik een vrijstelling voor had moeten krijgen. Alsof dit mes not niet diep genoeg in mijn vlees stak, zijn er op loopafstand projecten goedgekeurd, die straks van mij een soort van super BV moeten maken (want ondertussen blijkt alles wat ik vermoedde als een bus te kloppen en draait men moedwillig de zaken om),maar ondertussen heeft men me buiten gewerkt met dubieuze tactieken en geloof me, elke golf breekt over een zich terugtrekkende golf. Je moet het hele verhaal kennen, om er de moraal uit te kunnen halen en, ook al ben ik op de beste plek in de wereld geboren, het resultaat is huilen met de pet op, want niemand geeft graag z'n investeringen op (en ik heb bijna 63 jaar geïnvesteerd in een leven met een uitzonderlijk potentieel, maar ze waren er nog niet klaar voor. Kortom, die examens zijn alleen maar bedoeld als eliminatie en dat zegt genoeg over de huidige denkfout dat we meer dan genoeg kandidaten hebben om de verwende criticus uit te hangen. Niets is minder waar en zelfs de pionieren moeten toegeven dat alles is tegengehouden door onze verziekte mentaliteit, maar soms moet je door verliezen leren dat je niet van alles een rad van fortuin kan maken. De zevensprong maakte dat ik alles even uitgeprobeerd heb en zo weet ik perfect wat werkt en wat alleen maar goed staat op je c.v. Ik ben 'uitgewerkt' als het ware, het had een verrassend effect kunnen hebben, maar de usual parasieten waren sneller dan de mensen, die hun teentje voorzichtig in het water steken om de temperatuur te testen. Het ligt er zo dik bovenop, dat de schaamte voor de deur staat, maar ook daar is aan een creatieve oplossing gedacht, want er is al zo weinig om in de kast te leggen en alles wat we extra hadden is er ondertussen ook al doorgejaagd. Mensen zullen het ook nooit leren, tenzij het eens heel hard zeer doet en men weet dat er een heel ander traject klaar lag. Gedane zaken nemen geen keer, dus ik trek de juiste conclusies en bemoei me niet langer met zaken, waar je niet voor gestudeerd moet hebben. Studeren en nieuwsgierigheid lopen hand in hand en gelukkig heb ik een flexibel apparaat, wat kennis betreft. Zolang het over intellectueel snobisme gaat, kunnen we nog hopen dat het straks zal bijtrekken en wat werken binnen het onderwijs betreft, geef ik mijn portie aan Fikkie, want het sop was de kool niet waard.

@@learndutchwithkim De vragen zijn bizar, maar ik begrijp wel wat ze proberen te doen. Er bestaan namelijk inderdaad grote verschillen tussen culturen. Als je geïnteresseerd bent, lees dan de internationaal beroemde studie van Geert Hofstede, Allemaal Andersdenkenden. Wat ze nieuwkomers over de Nederlandse cultuur kunnen leren en misschien toeten, is bijvoorbeeld a) dat Nederlanders heel direct zijn (vind je mijn shirt mooi? Antw. Nee! hij staat je niet goed) b) dat de politie dienstbaar en waakzaam is (als je vluchteling bent uit bijvoorbeeld Sierra Leone dan ga je echt niet zelf naar de politie om aangifte te doen van een diefstal of geweld; de politie in die landen waren gevaarlijk voor je!), c) dat wij een goddeloos land zijn, met weinig respect voor religie. (Live with it! Op ons best zijn we tolerant, maar overschat dat niet!) en d) dat we een vrij land zijn, wat heel fijn is aan de ene kant, maar aan de andere kant ook betekent dat mensen in ons land dingen mogen doen die je misschien niet zo leuk vindt (satire, niet mogen uithuwelijken van je zoons en dochters, homoseksualiteit, abortus, euthanasie, you name it!). O ja, Kim, je hebt een geweldig kanaal! Ik heb het al aan meerdere mensen aangeraden om op een leuke manier Nederlands te leren.

Ik ben het met je eens, Kim, ik vind het ook een heel rare toets. 12:50 Wat kan hij het best doen in de wachtruimte in het ziekenhuis, bijvoorbeeld? "De vrouw" aan de balie vragen? Want opbellen met je telefoon mag niet en als je naar buiten ga, dan kan de dokter je niet vinden. Maar in het echt, als je in de wachtruimte zit, waarom wil je opeens iets aan iemand vragen? Waarom kan het niet wachten tot later? Dus ja, als je "wilt" iets aan iemand vragen, dan ga naar buiten! Antwoord: C. Maar dat ga ik eigenlijk niet doen, dus antwoord D: geen van de bovengenoemde antwoorden, want ik wil het risico niet lopen dat ik niet aanwezig ben wanneer de dokter komt.

Hoi Arse, welk examen ga je doen? Als je het inburgerinsgexamen op B1-niveau gaat doen, dan moet je wel het KNM-examen maken, maar als je het Staatsexamen gaat doen, dan (volgens mij) niet :)

I think from 2016 or 2017 everyone has to sign a NDA. I took mine in 2015 and these were some of the most memorable questions from the KNM: - if you see pork on the menu, what do you do? there was no context except a brown man sitting at the table looking at a menu. - you want to cut down a tree on your property, what do you do? how many dutchies know if hey can cut down the tree or have to get permission first? seriously, this is a "ask first" question. - I'm going to a friend's house warming party. What do I bring? My options were a big expensive gift, flowers, nothing. This is subjective. Most of my friends it would be wine or whisky. - Are women allowed to vote in the Netherlands? My options were yes but they need to research, yes but they need to be told whom to vote for by their husband, no. Funny enough, an article had come out a week before about how men controlled women's votes X% of the time in the bible belt. I almost got kicked out of the exam room for laughing. - my daughter is going to be in a play and I have no time to volunteer like other parents, what do I tell the teacher? I have no time, I just donate some clothes for costumes, I donate money for supplies. Again, I think this is really subjective and have no clue if I got it right or not. There was only 1 question about holidays. It showed a picture of the golden carriage. There were 3 questions about political parties. The rest was really weird, subjective questions, questions a normal person would google or call the gementee to ask (permits and such), or really weird flex questions obviously aimed at turks/muslims.

The whole experience was weird and frankly insulting. If you didn't read or listen to the news (This was the Rita Verdonk and Wilders anti immigrant era), once you got into the study material and took the tests you understood 500% what group of people this whole experience was designed for. It wasn't those of us from western countries. But yes, even though I thought I was going to fail kennis due to overthinking myself about half way through since they were so subjective. I mean, it shows the guy who decided to go ahead and cut down those trees anyways with a bump on his head. Was he supposed to go to the emergency room, call his huisart or just take some paracetamol and put a bandaid on it? How would I know what he's supposed to do from the bloody picture?! But I'm pretty sure whenever kennis mentions paracetamol that's probably the right choice (expat joke). The 2 tests I failed was lezen and spreken. Lezen was the first test of the day, I was incredibly nervous (not a good test taker) and rushed myself and didn't read well. Second time was fine. Then spreken. At the time I took it this was done on a telephone in the testing center. You got a series of questions that you gave one or two word answers to as well as a bunch of sentences you had to parrot back. For the sentences, it didn't matter if you repeated everything back perfectly. If you didn't hit the candence perfectly you failed. It also didn't like accents. I failed 3x and at the time there wasn't the ability to do it in front of a human. I believe a group took this to court and won, some of them with asian accents had taken the test over 15 times and failed due to the accent issue. About a year after I did this they instituted the rule if you failed 3x you had the right for a review in front of a person. The cherry on top of this entire thing... I applied for dutch nationality because whenever they add a new test they make those who already previously passed take the new one retroactively. I got all of the information of the ceremony IN ENGLISH, half of the ceremony was IN ENGLISH and I got a dutch cookbook....... IN ENGLISH. o-O

Zoals de meesten hier reageer ik op het stukje 'vragen die meer over common sense gaan'. Zelf denk ik dat deze vragen gestoeld zijn op hoe mensen zich in de realiteit gedragen. Bv, in de wachtkamer. 'Eerst melden' wat zie ik vaak gebeuren? Dat mensen naar de balie lopen en zeggen, 'heb nu dokter nodig' zelfde over het bellen. De goede optie zou waarschijnlijk zijn om ipv bellen, berichten te sturen. Of misschien heel kort zachtjes bellen als het niet anders kan. Naar buiten stappen zou ik zelf alleen doen als ik in de gaten zou kunnen houden wanneer de dokter komt. Maar de praktijk is dat er zeer regelmatig op zeer luide toon mensen zitten te bellen. Niet altijd noodzakelijk maar meer als tijdvulling. Maatschappelijke normen die blijkbaar aangeleerd moeten worden. Misschien dat het belerende toontje komt door de manier van vragen stellen. Dat kunnen ze natuurlijk wel veranderen.

Toen ik de NT2 examen deed was er geen optie welke niveau te kiezen. Ik vond het toen al raar, sommige vragen waren erg vreemd. De luistertoets bijvoorbeeld was een lange stukje over hoeveel vitamine C was in allerlei verschillende fruiten zoals de kiwi en de sinaasappel. Het bleek vanuit de geluidsfragment dat de kiwi had de meeste per honderd gram. Dan op de toets was de vraag, Welke fruit de meeste vitamine C? Keuzen waren A. Sinaasappel B. Kiwi C. Kers D. Aardbei. Nou alle van de vier hebben vitamine C maar welke had de meest, ja, het is de kiwi want wij hebben net gehoord dat de kiwi had de meeste vitamine C. B dus. Fout! De antwoord is A omdat sinaasappels groter dan kiwi's zijn. Maar hoe kon iemand weten dat dat is precies wat zij wouden horen.

Dit is grappig. We weten ook niet hoeveel vitamine C er in kiwi's en sinaasappels zit. Als een kiwi vijf keer zoveel vitamine C heeft als een sinaasappel, dan zou het wel het fruit met de meeste vitamine C kunnen zijn.

@@cassiexu1894 Volgens de geluidfragment was er 80mg of zo in een sinaasappel, en meeste sinaasappels zijn 2x groter dan een kiwi, dus het is 160mg in een sinaasappel en 100mg in een kiwi, dus de antwoord is goed. Maar niemand zegt hoe groot elk stuk fruit was, dat is zeker belangrijk.

Just my opinion, but people who are naturalizing (from anywhere to anywhere) often come from different cultures and it’s important for them to learn how to integrate into the culture of their new home. Especially in Nederland where the native Dutch don’t “suffer fools gladly” and who are known to openly express their disapproval of behaviours that don’t appear to conform with their expectations. For example in the waiting room example, a newcomer might have come from a place where signs are regularly ignored and where it is totally acceptable to bark orders to the “lowly worker” seated at the desk. This would not go over well in Nederland (or here in Canada for that matter). I think these are valuable lessons for a newcomer to learn.

Also, I would add, when I became a Canadian citizen (after having lived here 45 years) there were similar questions on the exam here. And yes, part of the rationale was to test comprehension of the English language, but also to set expectations for what is acceptable behaviour in public situations (or “society”).

I took this test for my residence permit. Some questions were interesting and I totally understand that it is hard to cover every culture shocks that may happen. People come from all over the world, with very different backgrounds. But honestly, some of them are condescending and misleading. The one about being angry at an older person - I’m sure it’s not about culture here, I’m not aware of any culture where you are taught to be disrespectful. But in real life it is very subjective, maybe you should just try to be kind but maybe the person is being mean to you every day for months - then a talk to the boss would help. How can we tell? Would be more honest to really emphasize the cultural norm here - be direct but not aggressive, respect the rules (usually, as everyone who ever being in a silent area of the train can tell you), respect different opinions and be tolerant, among others. Maybe the famous Dutch directness is avoided for fear to be called as discriminatory. I understand this is a tricky subject but the condescending tone and all over the place subjective questions are not really helpful. But culture and culture shock are a real thing and in the end I’m glad it’s at least tried to teach something about it.

Ik denk dat we allemaal vaak niet begrijpen hoe belerend zulke vragen overkomen. Een naturalisatietoets is natuurlijk bedoeld voor mensen die Nederlands als vreemde taal hebben geleerd en om aan te tonen of de taal in zekere mate wordt beheerst. Naar mijn mening zijn deze vragen toch een uiting van vooroordelen tegen mensen met een andere culturele achtergrond. Ik snap dat je daar boos van wordt Kim. Ik was nu nieuwsgierig en deed de oefentoets ook, maar de volgenden vragen werden steeds nog vreemder...

Hé Kim, ja, hoe je omgaat met andere mensen in andere landen is soms wel anders. Bijvoorbeeld, in sommige landen maak je direct een klacht bij de politie of management in plaats van direct met de desbetreffende persoon te bespreken. Daarom vind ik deze vragen relevant. Maar ik snap dat je het een beetje raar vindt!

Ik vind de video geweldig. Ik kreeg hetzelfde gevoel als jij, vernedering, tijdens mijn oefenings. Daarom heb ik het NT2 examen gedaan. Niettemin ben ik het eens met de verhuizing en de blaffende hond vragen en antwoorden. In Latijns-Amerika niemand zou met de buurjongen praten of de buren waarschuwen. Maar de meeste vragen van het examen zijn belachelijk inderdaad. En advies voor de mensen die gaan het examen afleggen: kies het antwoord waar "praten met de buren, collega, etc."staat.

Like most Dutch bureaucratic systems, this exam has been designed to capture the least informed, educated, aware, or capable potential users. This seems to be a common approach to all systems in NL regarding new residents, migrants etc. Rather than provide services that engage the individual and reflect their age, experience, education, general circumstances, they cater to the worst case scenario and with that also include intrinsic biases and prejudices that come with the Government of the day. I know this from personal experience with Permits, Banking, Mortgage Finance, Licencing etc. It seems these systems are inherently lazy and inflexible, heavily biased, deliberately designed to treat everyone as suspect of wanting to cheat or abuse the system. They also result in unnecessary stress and excess cost to the individual and motivate revenue raising from the departments or private industry the Govt has effectively given a green light to abuse and profit from. What is strange is how few Dutch people actually realise this until you explain it to them but then agree that the systems are probably designed to act as a deterrent to both migrants and also returning Dutch citizens because the Country is too full etc etc.

First of all, nice video! Maar... Now add to that the fact that all the books and online systems teach different things. Then we study, we take the test, and then we come across nonsense questions like these on the exam, we fail, we pay again, and we keep trying until we pass. Seriously.. what's the logic of that? There is of course a good intention on these, but unfortunately looks more like a waste of time and money, and makes the integration process just more slow. Looks like it needs a good review...

Uiteraard kun je twisten over het nut van bepaalde vragen in dit examen, maar ik vond ze zo gek nog niet. Zo’n examen moet vooral niet een feitjesquiz zijn, maar ingaan op processen en normen en waarden in beeld brengen. Je veelvuldige opmerking is dit in andere landen anders, het zegt niets over de Nederlandse maatschappij, kan ik niet beamen. In veel andere landen word je geacht anders te handelen dan hier beschreven staan, dus ja, in veel andere landen is het heel anders. En niet best dat je niet weet wat de koning doet of waar het provinciebestuur over gaat. Een minpuntje bij je anders altijd informatieve lessen over het Nederlands en Nederland.
