Come to think of it, License to Kill is one of the few movies where Bond actually does proper spy work by infiltrating the villain's organisation with the villain being completely unaware of it. All the other Bond movies I've seen the villain has always been aware of who he is and been a step ahead of him, here he's actually able to manipulate the villain into trusting him and have him turn on his own.

Tbh, License to Kill doesn't feel like a Bond movie, it's very dark and Bond is on his own mission. On Her Majesty's Secret Service somewhat does that, because Blofeld was suspecting something along the way. Octopussy being another - Bond had the edge on Kamaal's plans for a long time, especially handling the egg.
@largol33t12

Also, to prepare for the role, Timothy Dalton read a few of the books and based his performance on the Bond in those books. So ironically, he portrays Bond the way Ian Fleming would have wanted when critics blast him for not "sticking to the formula." I've read one of the books and the kind played by Roger Moore is VERY different from the one in the books.

Interesting ranking. =) What I love about the 007 franchise is that, unlike other movie franchises (whose rankings from most fans are usually predictable or even), you're not going to find equal 007 movie rankings most of the time. That speaks well of the variety that Bond's adventures have offered in terms of tone, story, character and dialogue. Therefore, the only way a non-fan can tell if he/she likes a James Bond movie or which films he/she should start with is not by randomly looking at a personal ranking of a 007 fan, but by seeing the movies for himself/herself.

What I love about these Bond film rankings is that it illustrates the adage "someone's garbage is someone else's treasure." Now no Bond movie is garbage, of course, but it is fascinating to see how one's personal taste is formulated by nostalgia, age, etc... Huge props for giving so much love to Licence to Kill! It was my first Bond movie and I still would put it somewhere in my top 3. Ironically, for being the first film in the series not to use a Fleming title, I think it’s the one that comes closest to capturing the feeling of reading a really good Fleming novel. I could imagine the whole story written out in Fleming’s style and you wouldn’t have to change anything except the time period.

Thank you for all the time and work you put into this video. That's a great point you made about using that scene from 'Dr. No' as a screen test for any Bond actor candidate. Apart from 'OHMSS' and 'TWINE', I don't have any major differences with you in how I respond to these films. 'TWINE' has great concepts, but I can't emotionally engage with it for a few reasons. 'OHMSS' is a polarising film, just like 'Live And Let Die'. I treat the Craig films as an entirely separate sub-series and I think it might take another 10 years to be able to put those 5 films into better perspective with the main series of films.

I have been looking forward to this video for a long time and it didn't disappoint - as a matter of fact it did surprise me at several points! Good to see you come around the likes of Moonraker and A View to a Kill, and big, big shootout to your comments on Dr No. I'm only one year younger than you and grew up loving the more action-packed Brosnan flicks, so it's really great to hear so much appreciation from a fellow 90s kid for a film that is indeed anything but vanillia - it's dark chocolate, with an edge. Also, You Only Live Twice is my top 10 as well but there's nothing guilty about the pleasure I have watching this film over and over :D

I fully agree, I wouldn't go that far but "Skyfall" certainly takes itself way too seriously and that is definitely not what I expect from a 007 film (there are loads of other genres and directors for that), whereas "Diamonds Are Forever" is campy, fun and definitely captures some of the "modern" looks of many films in America in the early 70s, although what the video says about the cheap-looking effects is absolutely true! Great list and superb video, nonetheless.

I totally agree with these, however I think my top spot would’ve gone to Goldeneye. There’s something about that Cold War style, unforgiving yet classy 90s vibe that contrasts itself perfectly. It’s one of those ones you’d watch countless times on Saturday nights as a kid and would be glued to the tv. For me, Brosnan was the perfect bond.

It's nice to see someone else giving Timothy Dalton some kudos for his performance. I also consider For your eyes only among the 10 best. What's your favorite Bond girl? I love Kara from The living daylights. She was the correct way to show a strong woman without being offensive. The purple haired weirdo in The Last Jedi was a terrible way of doing it. Kara just let her actions speak loudly. She didn't take crap from anyone but I suspect it's because she had been brutalized by the KGB. When she is released from interrogation late in the start of the movie, the look on her face and how she was clutching her trenchcoat suggested to me that she had been sexually molested by Koskov's thugs.
@Germaniac77
@Germaniac77 2 ай бұрын
@@largol33t12A good Bond girl does not necessarily ned to be strong. For me it is a mixture of a.) what is her part in the plot / what does she bring to the story? b.) how is her chemistry with Bond / romance? b.) uniqueness. In germs of hotness and stroy-arc Domino needs to be mentioned. Aside from the fac that Claudine auger ws the hotest bond girl ever, her arc of being a mistress that later truns against her lover was so strong tha s was reused later in LTK. In terms of romance/chemistry Kara and Veesper are definitly up there as well. I would love to mention Anja Amasova for being strong and unique but she became useless and a damsel in the third act unfortunatley. Melina Havelock has a great storyarc and is very strong BUT the age difference with Roger´s Bond at that point ruins the romance/chemistry for me.

My order has changed a lot over the years but LTK has always remained a solid staple of my top 5. Severely underrated by many for some quite understandable reasons but for me it is just tremendous. The killer look in Bond's eye for the duration of the film really does it for me. I love the music, the time period, the bad guys, Bond going rogue. Some day I may figure out how to make my own ranking video

I´ve been with Bond since the beginning so naturally have a preference for Connery´s Bond. I like Goldeneye but it would only get a mid-ranking from me. Saying that my top 5 would be: 1) From Russia with Love 2) Casino Royale 3) Licence to Kill 4) Goldfinger 5) The Spy Who Loved Me and my bottom 5 would be 22) Diamonds are Forever 23) Spectre 24) Never Say Never Again 25) Quantum of Solace 26) No Time To Die (has to be bottom as I´ll never forgive them for killing off Bond. Probably my favourite ranking list of Bond films, well done. Glad you appreciate Dalton as he's my generation of bond and his 2 movies are so underrated. Licence to Kill has gone up in my books a lot lately and I was always a bigger fan of The Living Daylights but some of the villains do indeed fall flat, Brad Whittaker definitely and can't unsee one of the KGB Agents in Bratislava as being Jaffa from London's Burning 😂 Sanchez definitely works as a villain because he is absolutely vile and to me probably the most grounded out of all the Bond movies made. Honourable mention to Casino Royale, the one Craig Movie I can go back and watch again and again. Still trying to convince my dad to watch it who's not seen a Bond movie since Dalton but then we both share that Connery is by far the best Bond of the lot and that will never change ever!

Nice guy in real life, but I just dislike the whole reboot idea. Yeah...I'm just a cranky old fart I guess! So: here it is. 26: Quantum Of Solace (Fell asleep watching. Luckily I watched it at home) 25: No Time To Die (No matter what: you just DON'T kill Bond. But I already said I despise the reboot thing) 19: Skyfall (Allright! Ready with Craig! Although watchable) 18: Thunderball (Drags, too far ahead of Bond and endless underwater scenes) 17: Dr. No (Classic, fun, but...that music....) 16: Diamonds Are Forever (Blofeld in drag, are you serious?!) 15: Live And Let Die (What's with the voodoo stuff...) 14: For Your Eyes Only (Lousy villain) 13: You Only Live Twice (Bored Connery and a ridiculous make over) 12: Tomorrow Never Dies 11: The World Is Not Enough 10: A View To A Kill (Roger is much too old in this one but great villains) 9: The Man With The Golden Gun (Christopher Lee. Nuff said) 8: Moonraker (Just fun, pure fun) 7: From Russia With Love (Slow but a classic spy thriller) 6: The Living Daylights (Weak villains but a great debut by Dalton) 5: Octopussy (Never get bored with this one) 4: Goldfinger (Connery's best although he's captive for most of the time) 3: The Spy Who Loved Me (Roger's Goldfinger, great story) 2: Goldeneye (The best set of villains ever, especially Xenia) 1: License To Kill (Best main villain, great story, perfect portrayal by Dalton) Very happy to see we share our top 2, but having seen all of your reviews: it didn't really come as a surprise. I consider some other movies better made such as Casino Royale, Goldfinger, and even Spy Who Loved Me. But there’s something about those sequences even without the best villains or Bond girls.
