Very nice to finally see a list with Daylights and FYEO near the top. The former has a criminally underrated actor and score, while the latter has some of the best cinematography of the series - from the action sequences to the way the camera pans from foreground to background in some shots - really creates some next level transitions.

The only glaring exception for me is Licence to Kill which sits in my Top 10 around the same spot you have No Time To Die, and similar to your justification for No Time To Die, the problems you had with Licence to Kill I can understand but I simply didn’t have those problems when I saw it 10 times in the theater back in 89. Spectre over Skyfall??
@PurushaDesa
@PurushaDesa Жыл бұрын
@@MrWafflelova 😂Ah the most controversial point on the list! So I’ll answer as fully as I can. The truth in my heart is that they’re ranked in joint place but this is how the tie breaks for me. Skyfall is unquestionably the better _film_ with clearer stakes, stronger villain, and some of the best dialogue in the entire franchise. However I maintain that Spectre is the better _Bond film_ , checking most of the boxes I want ticked while Skyfall vexes me in some very key ways. For every fan that takes issue with Blofeld as Bond’s brother, I actually find M as Bond’s mother far more weird and distracting. I just always prefer Bond and M as headbutting colleagues which Brosnan/Dench and Craig/Fiennes do tremendously well. And so not being invested in that means the killer emotional punch in Skyfall never really works for me. Spectre also has an actual Bond Girl in it all the way through treated with a relatively large degree of respect, whereas Skyfall’s pump/dump/kill/joke approach to Severine - who was a child sex slave - is the most distasteful element in Craig’s entire tenure. It’s noteworthy how Paris Carver is mentioned again and Madeleine Swann has a whole second film devoted to her while Severine is just discarded callously by the filmmakers. (M sort of does double duty as the female lead in Skyfall but making Judi Dench a terrible shot in her swansong leaves a bad taste in my mouth - they should have given her a killer aim like Helen Mirren in RED in my opinion.) On top of that, it doesn’t help that it would take until “Backfire” and “Snow Plane” till I get to action cues that I enjoy from Thomas Newman because most of his material is too underpowered. I’d go further and say that the strength of his “Tennyson” cue reaffirms how Skyfall’s drama peaks too early at the end of the second act. This puts me in a minority but I find I enjoy Spectre more as it goes on - everything up to the train has this casual, meandering Moore-like pacing - but then it really takes off after the train fight when Craig is allowed to get beaten and emotionally rattled. I do concede that the enemies-to-lovers arc for Madeleine and Bond is not given nearly enough time to breathe in Spectre, but this only really stays problematic when the movie is viewed as one big series anticlimax. As a penultimate episode before No Time to Die fully commits to their story (and Seydoux is allowed to act her socks off in that film) Spectre works even better than it does on its initial release. There you go! At least you can understand my thought process even if your feelings on it are vastly different from mine!

@@ricardocantoral7672 in your opinion (which is fine) but you do not speak for everyone. I started watching the series for the 1st time from Dr No onward in order without reading any spoilers/reviews so was completely unbiased and OHMSS was so bad that I literally gave up on James Bond. I thought he (Lazenby) had taken over the series after Connery and if someone hadn't told me a year later that he was just a once off, I wouldn't have seen anything else post-Connery. Have revisted it multiple times and it is just as excruciating. Lazenby is not convincing for a single frame, the hyped romance with Tracy is incredibly forced/downright creepy at times, the plot is one of the worst of the series (DAF level), Blofeld is completely rewritten, and worst of all it is just flat out BORING. Crap movie, will never waste my time on it again.

Great to see you put all on the line here JD! The Martini List - December 2023 1. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) 2. From Russia with Love (1963) 3. Thunderball (1965) 4. Dr. No (1962) 5. The Living Daylights (1987) 6. Casino Royale (2006) 7. For Your Eyes Only (1981) 8. Goldfinger (1964) 9. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) 10. License to Kill (1989) 11. Live and Let Die (1973) 12. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) 13. Quantum of Solace (2008) 14. Goldeneye (1995) 15. Octopussy (1983) 16. You Only Live Twice (1967) 17. Skyfall (2012) 18. No Time to Die (2021) 19. The World is Not Enough (1999) 20. Diamonds Are Forever (1971) 21. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) 22. Moonraker (1979) 23. Spectre (2015) 24. Die Another Day (2002) 25. A View to a Kill (1985) 26. Never Say Never Again (1983) My approach, rather than rate each film with a score was to separate the films initially by Bond actor and rate the best of the actors output first, always adding weight to those most honouring the Fleming literary character legacy, combined with script robustness, entertainment value etc. That was the easy bit. A couple of surprises for me in finessing this list over the last few weeks and having watched each film in original release order parallel to the UK cinema re-release this year was where certain key films landed compared to where I might have placed them say 10 years ago (that's just 3 films ago!). Nobody did it better than Connery - except when Peter Hunt directed & everyone else involved was at the top of their game. O.H.M.S.S. remains the benchmark. Dr NO. - so much of what we take for granted in the Bond series was there from the get-go. Including the fantasy and lifestyle projection courtesy of the visions of Terence Young & Ken Adam. That combined with it being more consistent and with less plot dips and screenplay lulls than Goldfinger have it now rating higher than that (but still beneath the masterclass entertainment that is Thunderball - peak Terence Young & Sean Connery but script wise, not quite as consistent as FRWL). Dalton needed that 3rd & 4th film to cement his greatness in being the best portrayal of the literary character ever to grace the screen. TLD is still right up there for me, only losing a little momentum after the scene where he spares Pushkin's life and suffering from a lack of a strong villain/mastermind focus. While the 1st Brosnan film I rate is TND at 12, this is less a criticism of Pierce (who always gave it his best) and more as many have said of the quality & inconsistency of the scripts he was given. The TND David Arnold Soundtrack, still topical plot theme, less of a Bond by numbers script (compared to the "safely" played Goldeneye) and Brosnan's greater assurance in the role win me over on this one. QoS shows a pure, almost emotionless killer and revenge seeker (for Vesper's death) in Craig's second outing - very Fleming-esque & better than many seem to credit it (esp. compared with the crowd pleaser that is "Skyfall"). Fast pace from that opening scene get-go, the action never lets up. Just outside my Top Ten. I added Connery's non-Eon offering for it as we all know, put itself out there in 1983 as a legitimate alternative to the Broccoli product, assuming that with Connery back in the lead role, it had genuine legitimacy. Yet the final film remains IMHO the lesser compared with all of EON's often variable output and proved that it was the collective creative efforts that made the Bond films what they have always been, not any single element.

@@bouya642 thanks for the thumbs up and equally good sir, your ranking garners my respect. To be honest I find there's a certain fluidity with the rankings dependent upon mood and mindset and how I'm measuring. E.g. I find TSWLM a more entertaining blockbuster Moore period Bond film but appreciate FYEO as a more grounded, Fleming-esque return to form so on any given day, I could swap places with these two. Until recently, I too would have ranked FRWL above all other Connery films and I still think of his movies it best captures the feel of Fleming and the source material. However my criteria is perspective dependent. Am I looking for best interpretation of Fleming's character, consistency of plot & storyline, escapism start to finish, blockbuster adventure filmmaking? etc. etc. So why do I now put Dr. No & Thunderball above FRWL for this listing? Because overall, they offer me more of the Bond cinema experience as interpreted by the EON production team. By that I mean Dr. No has the Ken Adam sets and fantastical nature of story & plot that the cinema version is renowned for even though the character is better fleshed out with more nuance by Connery in FRWL and it is also a more grounded Cold War espionage story (despite the inclusion of Spectre absent from the novel). Thunderball has some pacing issues but overall it combines all of the best elements of the previous 3 movies, builds on the original blockbuster nature of Goldfinger and with Terence Young back in the Directors chair serves up a smorgasbord of everything that defines Bond at the movies. Exotic EVERYTHING, beautiful women (all four key female characters), swinging 60's bachelor lifestyle aspirations, high stakes plot, gadgets, tongue in-cheek humour & innuendo, jet-set lifestyle, escapism... Looking at both our lists I'd say most of the first 15 we have are interchangeable so there's a commonality on what we look for in a Bond film.

Great video! We loves the rankings. It's fascinating to hear why a certain film occupies a certain place in someone's list. Your emphasis on the look of the films, the cinematography and the design really resonates. That figures strongly in my preferences as well. Also, what you say about the films that are more grounded in reality and aren't creating scenarios just to wow and impress makes a lot of sense to me. In my (admittedly diseased) brain there are always three lists in constant battle with each other: the best, my favorite, and my most likely to watch. I'll bore you only with the highest in each list: FRWL, TSWLM, DAF (yeah, I know). Again, very enjoyable video!

Ive been on a Bond movie kick for a couple weeks. Just rewatching them and thinking of them critically. Along with watching a few I'd never seen. While watching you, Calvin, and the Bond experience, I've noticed something I just don’t understand. So I just watched both Thunderball and License to Kill for the first time the other day, and I'm blown away from the common consensus. I thought LtK was fantastic, maybe in my top 5 Bond films and Thunderball was a boring slog that doesn't hold up at all......Am I just crazy? As for Bond going rogue in LTK being a novelty - I'd argue Bond pretty much did so already in OHMSS. He handed in his resignation, and pretty much organized the attack on Piz Gloria without MI6 approval or support. That being said, I really like LTK, Franz is an amazing villain and I like the dark atmosphere it sets up. A nice change of pace after years of more goofy Moore films.
