Here’s my explanation for Trevelyan faking his death: He was basically defecting to Russia and Ourumov was helping him. He probably didn’t have much to offer Ourumov but maybe giving up Bond and the mission was enough to convince Ourumov to help him. So Ourumov loaded his gun with one bullet and faked killing Alec more so that the rest of the troops wouldn’t find out. They were definitely planning on killing Bond. So Alex defects and starts up his criminal organization, probably kept in contact with Ourumov over the years, and came up with the Goldeneye plan years later when the project was really up and running

I completely agree with you on the 006 vs 007 showdown as being one of if not the most brutal and intense fight sequences of the entire series that has yet to be rivaled (maybe apart from CR?). Understandably the famous train fight between Bond and Red in FRWL was certainly edgy for 1963, but just the sheer ferocity of the GoldenEye scene always leaves a huge impact after every viewing.

12:58 I don't think the Admiral was replaced by Ouromov but by a doppelganger of the Admiral. You can see him standing next to Xenia on the yacht from diagonal back in a short scene. Also, there is a photo of the Admiral on his stolen identity card and Ouromov has no similarity at all. I think they avoided showing directly who was with Xenia hijacking the helicopter to avoid some cheesy doppelgagner-thing like in Thunderball. Also they didn't fly directly to Severnaya, there is some time in between (Bond went back to MI6 in the meantime and they don't wear the pilots' uniforms anymore when they arrive), so they took the helicpoter to some location and Ouromov joined just for the flight to Severnaya.

Alfred Valrie I completely agree. Resourceful, tough, no nonsense, and breathtakingly beautiful. Her chemistry with Brosnan is superb, the interplay they have is a major highlight. That scene when she and Bond escape the train, she is rightly whinging "Do you destroy everything we get into?" With Bond responding, with agreement "Boys with Toys" She finally realises there is no point in arguing further, or trying to change Bond's character she just leaves him be. And then she acts all sultry "Tell me are there any further standard procedures I should be aware off... Commander?" Absolutely sensational and sexy. One of the top three Bond girls to date.

Pierce is the perfect image of Bond. I too grew up on his Bond but if you had to compose an image of Bond, Pierce fits perfectly.
@DM-kv9kj5 жыл бұрын
Ian Fleming who created the character already created an image and personality of Bond. The closest actor to fit that image was Timothy Dalton with Sean Connery a close second. Bond was described as having a long straight nose, very cold blue-grey eyes and he even had a 3 inch scar down his right cheek. "Faintly piratical" was also used and the emphasis on his looking very "dangerous" and "cruel" was often mentioned - this being what juxtaposed his intellectual side and occasional flashes of great affection and humanity which he often tried to hide behind a world-weary, hard masculine shell as well as his many vices such as smoking 70 cigarettes a day, drinking to excess, occasionally taking drugs even and a bit of fussiness about what he wore and what he ate etc which contrasted the hard edge also. Brosnan had an amazing head of hair and was very charming and cool, but he was much more friendly looking than Fleming's character and had quite a big head too. He was the perfect change for the 90s style (though personally while I still find Goldeneye to be absolutely brilliant, his other movies went rapidly downhill IMO). When reading the original novels I always end up picturing, from Fleming's many descriptions, an amalgamation of Dalton and Connery.

Looks wise Brosnan is the best Bond...period....he is pretty damn good in suaveness and smoothness and even has a tough edge as we see in The World Is Not Enough but the problem he faced that he wasnt given much to work with....apart from The World Is Not Enough which he was in top form..the movies around him wasnt quite expected but his first three movies were different 1. Goldeneye a spy thriller with a former agent turning against MI6 2. Tomorrow Never Dies an Octopussy like fun action adventure 3. The World Is Not Enough which was Pierce's best outing by far and the first time the M kidnapping subplot kicked in. His portrayal did save the franchise and I was so gutted that Die Another Day happened and ultimately ruined his tenure which was not his fault to be honest....he did what he was given and there was a plan for fifth Brosnan Bond along the lines of Goldeneye, such a shame that didnt happen Timothy Dalton is rightfully a more invested and a better representation of a more emotional, enraged and conflicted Bond with sprinkles of charm....that is Bond....and for me Timothy Dalton did the role justice than any other

+Electone_Guy Big head? His head only appeared big, because his hair had a lot of length covering his ears which makes his receding hairline more noticeable. Especially with the top of his hair combed back in the scene meeting Sanchez face to face for the first time. If his hair was cut shorter, his head would not look so much like a "guy with a big head." And to be honest. Dalton and Brosnan are both tiny little guys when compared to Connery, Moore, and Craig.

9/10 It's the best of all worlds, all prior eras that is. Although Brosnan doesn't reinvent the character, he's got a bit of each Bond wrapped together and it's a bold attempt to please all parties after some rejected Dalton's grim depiction. Perhaps the most memorable cast of characters in any of the movies, some better than others, but they're distinct and it makes for a product where specialists of the world face off, almost like each side is an organized team trying to thwart the other. The action is fantastic and balanced just right with humor/character development, again trying to take the best of prior incarnations and blend them together. The smuggling of an antenna with the Goldeneye setup to Cuba falls under a similar doubt to Drax's space station in Moonraker and that plot point does dock it from a perfect score. Even so, it's my favorite of the series...all nostalgia of playing the N64 game before seeing this and being thoroughly impressed to see it with a big film budget aside.

DBF - Finally watched Goldeneye! It was one of the first Bond films I wanted to watch since it was Brosnan's 1st and the story seemed very interesting. An MI6 traitor and finally got the Commies back in the fold! Overall, I think it was a solid chapter. It had all the standard Bond stuff and more, but it just seemed like it was missing something. They really pushed Brosnan's Bond to the limits. He out did everyone else before him in pulling off the unthinkable. He was their golden boy, though. They waited a long time to get him and I think he plays the part very well but they may have pushed some of his stunts too far. I think what was missing was substance. The movie kind of had a cold, impersonal feel to it. Brosnan was a Mission Impossible type 007, no one else was doing some of the crazy sh*t they had him doing, not even Connery. But there was no real insight into the mind or personality of the new Bond. 006 called him out, questioning his integrity and they had M taking a hard line approach with him. But whatever was going on inside his head was a mystery. Not even a Roger Moore smirk or roll of the eyes. But it's not any fault of his. Brosnan was quite capable of playing all of the wide range of elements that comes with the role. The tough guy, the gentleman, the charmer, the intellect etc. Brosnan was somewhat hindered by the new direction the franchise was taking in the 90's and the fact that all of Fleming's material was used up. Too much emphasis was put on action, destruction and trying to one up all the other films that began diluting the genre at the time. I think most of the criticism Brosnan received during his run was unfair. He was the total package. They just struggled from a creative standpoint to take full advantage of his potential. Overall, though, without completely tearing everything down and analyzing it, I'd give Goldeneye a 9 out of 10. Just about everything came together in this one. (It's crazy how fast Brosnan seemed to age during his eight years with the character! He looked like he aged 20 yrs in between Goldeneye and DAD!)

Great video for a great movie! The 90's really was a golden age for cinematic highs and lows...

The "fantasy cool and fun element" has been missing since Casino Royale too. Let's hope the next actor brings it back again.

I think Spectre had some of it too though! Larger than life henchmen, a villain lair, gadget car etc
@Resimaster3 жыл бұрын
@@DutchBondFan I remember so little about Spectre because I found it so dull and moody (like most of Craig's Bond films), but Mr Hinx was a good part as you finally see Bond overpowered and struggling to survive against an overwhelming enemy.

The base in Siberia was actually a miniature, the satellite dish is barely knee high. There's a photo on the internet of one of the guys who built it walking around placing the last few trees.

I was disappointed that this movie didn't have a car chase until I realized the car chase was replaced by a tank chase. Goldeneye was my favorite.

The car was not used for more scenes because BMW didn't want it to show the gadgets. They took this movie as a vehicle to introduce the Z3, which was a brand new line at the time. Obviously they paid good for getting the Z3 in the movie.

And now all the current model Z3's are crappy and WAY oversized.

Every bit as great as your Licence to Kill review. I especially liked the intro you started off with. (Those Dalton in Bond #17 promo images were awesome! I'd never seen them before.) I also hadn't seen that very early Pierce as Bond promotional clip in ages ... "You were expecting someone else?" I suppose one could view it as sort of a knock on Dalton, but I never chose to see it that way. Once again, great, great review.

Excellent review, I have to agree with just about everything you said - I was born in the early 90's as well and DID grow up playing the Goldeneye video game which significantly influenced me to watch the film a bit later on, but as a kid and as an adult I objectively find Goldeneye to be one of the best all around Bond movies in the franchise both for its similarities to the nostalgic video game which I love and for just being an excellent film which, as you eloquently put it, balances the extremes of the various Bond films we all know and love.

Dude i love your vids they are so well put together. I have a good idea for a series on your channel you should do these kind of recaps but on the 007 video games like nightfire, goldeneye n64, from russia with love etc.
@DutchBondFan6 жыл бұрын
An idea that gets presented to me more often. The thing with me is, this channel used to be centered around video games for years and years, so I'm kind of happy to not do that for now. But I do feel there are some good idea's there. I do also own some Bond games. But it's more or less a long term goal for me!

its funny how you mentioned about the mountain top location of the Russian base in the opening scene cause in the Cinemasins video about Goldeneye they mentioned the same thing and said it in just about the same wording too lol

Personally i always liked Brosnan as Bond, and thought he fitted the character like a glove. In fact i would say, when you take into account the differences in their films, hes on par with Connery and they both suit their respective eras well. Not that i have anything against Moore or Daulton, especially when you look at Moores films. They are so tongue in cheek and different from the earlier ones, i think old Rodger was ideal for the part, and as for Daulton, i remember watching the Living Daylights not long after it came out on VHS. I would have been around 12-13, and thought it was great. With Lazenby, having only done OHMSS, you never had a chance to really bond, (no pun intended), with his portrayal of the character. I still like the film and thought he played 007 pretty well anyway. I'm still not sure about the Daniel Craig bond though. Hes a great actor and his films are obviously successful, i just think i miss the playful silliness of the old ones, and find the new ones a little too serious. It obviously seems to work though, and I did like Skyfall.

That one scene where they’re fighting on the dish and then Bond jumping onto a helecopter and hanging on always makes me nervous since I’m terrified of heights😂. I would not be cut out for that sort of thing for sure!

I feel that GoldenEye has some of the best casting in the series that's even more effective casting than Spectre. And I LOOOOOVE this Bond film. Brosnan shows why he's a beloved Bond, I love the plot, the villain is also pretty damn good too, the movie just checks off all of the things on the list of what requires a good Bond film. Also you should've just flatout said that the music in the Xenia Car Race sounds like music from a 90's porn.

Goldeneye is my No.1 favorite Bond film for a number of reasons. It was the very first Bond film I ever watched when seeing the film age 7 a year after its release. The storyline is really different from previous films and revolutionary as it deals with James Bond in the post-Cold War era, and I really love how the filmmakers made the backdrop of that in the film. And Pierce gave his bestest outing as Bond at this point which is rare for a actor to portray Bond the first time.

22:37 What does kind of bothers me with this scene the more I think of it is that Bond likely shoots down a bunch of innocent people, it's not clear if those soldiers are involved in Urumov's scheme or if they're just hunting down the man they believe to be a spy who just murdered their defense minister.

26:10 in regards to the lack of a gadget car chase scene in the movie, I believe the idea is that the notorious tank scene is meant to facilitate that role. For a long time I too felt like we were cheated out of a car scene, but in reality we actually got a completely unique subversion of a car chase instead, where Bond has all the power in the form of a tank. For the 17th bond film I imagine it was difficult to still throw surprises at the audience, so when the tank bursts through the wall, you knew you were in for a treat. It's just a shame we didn't get to see the BMW because that model looks really cool, but Goldeneye has perfect pacing as a movie.

Brosnan easily my second favorite Bond of all time! Connery will always be Bond in my IMO and Craig always be a great modern Bond but Brosnan looks acts and charms his way into the role so so so well!!! Just a great Bond! My only regret is I wish the material in all his bond films were better but hey one can't have everything! As Famke Janssen...what can one say but pure eye candy with acting chops to boot! One of the most famous femme fatales of any bond film! Just great! Great reviews and look forward to more bond material!!! Thanks!

Pierce Brosnan is basically part of my childhood so is Goldeneye TND and The world is not enough. Right now I wonder what Goldeneye would have looked like if Dalton did it also how TLD and Licence would have looked like with Brosnan...so fascinating and interesting
