I bought one of these and yeah, it’s quite good. I have wimpy delicate hands so I sanded the rubber scales down a bit to make them a little less aggressively grippy and it’s a very comfortable knife now. The feel of the Elmax blade as Fallkniven has shaped the blade and treated the steel, reminds me a great deal of my older carbon bladed Puukkos. Just that slight bite into wood and utterly slicey. The point is dropped just enough to make the point narrow enough for most of bushcraft projects. Heck if you want a real carver get a puukko or a sloyd knife. But the F1x really nails it for me.

There is an artist on ETSY ( I think out of South Korea) who is doing African Blackwood scales for the F1x. I purchased the scales for my Elmax F1x and was very pleased. 1- it is flush with the handle making the grip more comfortable (obviously this might impair the scales on battoning but way more substantial grip; the thermorin scales are shit and peel off at screw points) 2- in the aesthetic design of the grip are hidden finger grooves which eliminate what I was afraid would be sweet spots in the handle. The scales also fit the factory sheath. I love the modifications they did to the X sheaths but to keep the factory sheath one is very limited in handle scale design. I had reached out to Erick at Falkniven suggesting they might want to offer varied scales for both the more practical purpose of a better handle material that could suit the thinness required to fit the sheath ( stronger material than thermorin) and to allow one to mix and match to dress up the knife - keep the suit get a new tie as it were, but he did not seem ready to do this. Scales remain very limited in after market but thus ETSY person got it right

Cos steel could have better edge stability than Elmax. I personaly like Steels that are more user friendly for field use and not the opposite that nowdays marketing push people to believe. I also like robust steels for my outdoors knives, and not the opposite, that again nowdays marketing tries to make people believe as true. PS It's not easy, needs knowledge a lot of experience and tools, but it's fun to create full convex blade geometries, out of saber flat or full flat grinds! 1st time I tried that out,was with a Handforged knife, whose maker did a perfect job on everything else, except the blade geometry, which was thick and uneven. I made very similar to a full convex Bark River Gunny. That knife came out one of my favorites to use, so after that, others followed too. I hate nowdays knives, because they come with decent blades, but really bad handle desings. Most of the times are very thin too, which makes things even worse. That's why I turned to Custom knives, that are also way better than any Factory made, or Semi-custom knife. Handforged ones, feel alive in your hands, while factory made ones, all feel like a dead piece of cold steel. It's difficult to go back from handmade, I also respect the efforts of the makers, which are huge literally. All handmade knives, are in my opinion value knives. No makers, is payed enough, for both his efforts and for the final product's performance cost of materials ratio.t's just my opinion. between thousands others!

@DTL Do you mean "reprofiling" with the RE? It all depends on the stones/method/experience Elmax and harder than that Super stainless steels, are some of the most difficult steels to reprofile. You need something like Shapton Glass stones to work on those steels that are both Super stainless and at around 62 hrc. Keeping Elmax sharp, is way easier though, using a ceramic rod, a leather strop etc works relatively fast as easy. Edge retention, if it's harder than 60 hrc it's impresive, if at around 60 hrc is still great, but my poor ballbearing steel knive's edges with the same hardness, last longer than Elmax, . Elmax is good for light and medium use, for hard use, you 'll get microchips on the edge at best, and you always risk to break the blade. It's suited better for a folding knife, rather than a fixed blade field use knife. (Don't believe what you see on KZbin, it's all marketing, they all sell something and they all make money,)

@DTL Everything you said, is 100% true! AEB-L, 14c28n, both steels are stainless and are like improved 80crv2, with same toughness but better edge stability (no chips on the edge at all) they both hold their edges a bit longer too, without losing any sharpness, like the Carbon steels do when they sit in the sheath or in the drawer. Any harder steels than that and the edge will take chips at some point, no matter how tough or advertised the steel is. Also.Any Sandvik steel from Sweden (Uddeholm), any steel from Austria (Böhler) that are now united in one company called (Böhler Uddeholm), any steel that comes from them, is better than any others. That's why you hear all the time, the words Elmax, M390, Sandvik steels etc etc Their technology is 3d Generation Power Metallurgy, when their counterparts from USA like CPM steels and Carpenter, make only Generation 1 and Generation 2 steels. Sweden was always the country with the best steel for knives in the world and Austria are also very famous, their Glock guns, are some of the best out there too!

@DTL Pleasure was mine! You don't meet logical people easily these days. Steel isn't the most important on a knife. It's all marketing. Heat treatment, blade geometry, even sheath it self, are more important. Without a proper safe sheath, you won't carry it, so it's useless no matter what's the steel it was made of... Steel becomes more important, mostly on the application. For example, dive or fishing knives etc. Have a nice evening! Take care

It was the cos steel that chipped very fast in fallkniven.
