As a kid growing up in the early eighties we all wanted the Rambo survival knife. We couldn't afford the good one so we all got the cheap ones made in Hong-Kong with the plastic compass and the worthless wire saw and accessories. Fortunately it wasn't terribly sharp so I still have all my fingers!
@georgemcmillan91724 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you are talking about! I had a couple of them back in the day, and shamefuly I currently own one today that I found at an estate sale about 20 years ago for $1.00, in the original box in mint condition! Pleather sheath, sharpening stone and all! I bought it just because. It sits in the safe with my Hibben Rambo knives. It's a reminder of days gone by...

@Feldgrau Fox, growing up in rural Northeast Ohio, I spent alot of time in the woods and camping. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, joined the Army at 17. Moved to Florida after the Army, met my wife who also loved camping. For 15 years, we went to a local spring to camp with all of the nieces and nephews along with my children and friends. I always took one of my "Rambo" knives on every trip. One of my nephews spotted the crappy knife, and tried to get it from me for a long time! After a spinal injury curtailed my camping, the kids all still go to the same springs, the same two weekends every year. We created an institution! My nephew finaly gave up and has his own spectacular knife collection, including an 80s crappy knife he found on ebay...

Yep. I had that same crap. Tried to cut a small sapling down with it to start a fire, couldn't even cut it. I think it came with a couple of matches inside it and that wire saw, a fish hook and fishing line. Edit: forgot it also had the pleather sheath, and the wetstone that had its own carrier on the sheath.

I have a US Air Force Pilot's survival knife that I got as a Boy Scout in 1964. It's a Camillus made of blued 1095 with a stacked leather handle. Pretty much a classic Ka-Bar except for the serrated back. Not good for slicing (too thick) but pretty much can do everything else. I suspect it'll outlive my grandsons. Even the leather sheath is still in good shape, despite (or maybe because of?) an accidental weeks-long soak due to a broken can of motor oil.

Good Evening Lars .. A nice looking knife Unfortunately, as a Pensioner, beyond my Pay Grade. A good idea being able to buy Sheaths separately. One could then, if required, set up some configurations on various kits .. reducing the need to continually switch the one sheath around. Yep .. the Dutch 'Hooligans' 😁 .. they sure know how to beat the living XYZ out of a knife. Sometimes my toes curl 😱 at the abuse they dish out to the hapless blades. However, looking past their fooling around, some serious testing takes place on their channel 👍. 'Rubber Bullets'. One should reserve judgement and negative comment thereon until .. one has been on the receiving end of such item .. or .. at the very least, actually witnessed the effect they have when 'used in anger'. Take care ..

@Jerbert-qn4in Sure you do lol, you can bulk at the price they're expensive (not overpriced) just expensive. But no one that's owned a Fallkniven blade has ever thought they suck... the quality is unquestionable, even if that knife doesn't fit your usage and isn't the right tool for that job. Doesn't mean "they suck." It just means it wasn't right for you. I have some Fallkniven knives that I don't use either, I have a more suitable tool for that job. But even though I don't use that blade much, it doesn't mean it sucks. Or you had some cheap knock-off and judge the real thing by that cheap crap.

Coatings (ceramic/tungsten) give you the factory tool for the longest time, which is good and great if you don't use the tool a lot. For a camping knife that would be good for me since I do not use them too much. For a tool I use a lot like a tungsten coated drill, it gets dull and you sharpen it and you sharpen the steel under the coating. For drill I found the steel of a coated drill does not resharpen as well as drills without coating, I suspect it is because of the sharpening quality of the steels.
@jamesgasper75594 жыл бұрын
The best knife is one you can resharpen
@greekveteran27153 жыл бұрын
If you mount a ceramic rod on it's sheath, you can sharpen any knife, where ever you may be.
@joseywales37893 жыл бұрын
@james Gasper, I disagree, and I'll explain why. In my opinion the best Knife is one that keeps it's edge in the first place. A knife that will be ready to use when you need it. A knife that won't be a hindrance to carry. I usually touch up my knife blade in an evening once I've used my knife during the day and then the last thing that I usually do with my knife is produce some feather sticks to light my fire and a few more for the morning, just in case my fire goes out during the night. This proves to me how sharp my knife is and if I need to use my DMT cards or my ceramic stone. A knife is a tool, just like a saw and the idea of re-sharpening a saw in the bush is not practical.

I am sooooo jealous!! I wish my property backed up to some BLM land or some forest I could go hiking in.. Although I am to old and unsteady to hike far, but even just a half mile in where it is quiet and serene. A half mile would take me about 3 hours at my rate.. But still it would be well worth it.. I have carried a knife since I was 8 years old and my uncle told me that any man worth his salt has a knife it is the ultimate tool for many occasions.. The pocket knife I have now is a benchmade osborne design M390 steel. The blade is just over 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) and the handle is about 5 inches (12.7 cm). Straight blade no serrations (I am not a big fan of serrated knife blades).. It was a fathers day gift I guess it cost around the 200 -250 price range.. It is a real nice blade I have had this one for about 4 or 5 years now and like it a lot.. I do not think I would have spent that kind of money for a pocket knife for myself.. But this one stands up to the use and abuse and looks as if I just got it still.. and it keeps a good edge for me.. Well good luck on your new home.. I look forward to seeing the progress.. carry on, be safe and keep having fun!

Hi Lars, for me, the value for money (VFM,) concept has to kick in here, and great though this knife might be, it doesn't compare very well with several other equally great knife brands of the VFM index. In today's world, survival often comes down to VFM and of course, to basic requirements, and the current VFM usefulness of this knife is a bit like its affiliation with the Swedish Airforce, now that it doesn't have to be seen to have the potential to chew moth holes in an Iron Curtain.
