"BLOODY C***" !!! Now that was funny.... I swear, I enjoy watching the friendship between you two as much as the Knives... I have carried the same exact Opinel #7 in my pocket for the last 30 years. Those Victorinox knives loosen up too quick (I still have 2). I just purchased a Jääkäripuukko 140 a few weeks ago and it pretty much has put all of my other knives into the storage case (except old #7). That is a formidable blade that I would have no reservations at all carrying it into combat or camping.. My Ka-Bar just got retired and that is saying a lot. I have had it for 40 years and it has saved my ass more than once.

Opinel #8 in stainless is a really good paring knife. I usually bring it when I travel to my in-laws to help in the kitchen because they have shitty dull knives. Also I recently spent a week-end peeling apples and pears to make compotes with the Opinel: Perfect! The combination of ergonomic handle and good slicing ability of the blade made it easy as a breeze.

I think this is a really good list. From everyday/small to large, from basic utility/backup to a bit nicer and cherishable. Obviously you are talking about knives, not multitools - many here would carry a Leatherman or similar as their EDC, but the principle is the same. Mora HD as a basic beater belt knife is excellent, and I like the fact that you totally agree on the Skrama as the big chopper in the arsenal. Behind all the roleplaying and humour is a lot of real knowledge of and passion for knives. Always a pleasure watching you guys. Ga zo door.

For all-round bushcrafting, camping, hiking purposes: Fallkniven F1 dz (lam cos). Before every camping/hiking trip I probably spend an hour deciding which knife to bring. 4 times out of 5, it is the F1 dz, beating out my S1 Pro, A1, Bravo 1, Bushcrafter, Garberg, and various other knives. The other 1 of 5 times, I force myself to take something different to justify the fact that I have so many other bushcraft knives. The F1 dz does everything well (assuming you also have a good splitting axe and a saw). It sharpens easily, doesn't rust, weighs very little and is comfortable in the hand. Another bushcraft/camping/hiking necessity, in my opinion: a small serrated folder for cutting things that tend to quickly dull a straight blade -- e.g., rope, leather, etc. A usually bring a 2 inch spyderco folder.

Knives you must have for bushcraft and survival. This is my budget list and all these knives work great. The total amount for al 5 is probably some 160 euro. I have no problem depending my life on these knives and I'm a survival instructor since 1986. Off course if you have more money you can buy knives that are more fancy or have 'better' steels, but we are talking about 'must haves'. 1. Victorinox Pioneer (or Farmer). As the last resort knife/multitool. 2. Hultafors RFR. An easy to clean stainless knife for food prep and small whitling. 3. Hultafors GK. More robust than Mora made of carbon steel knife for heavy duty use. 4. Ontario SP5 Bowie survival knife. Big knife and not to heavy also for small chopping. 5. Condor Eco Golok survival machete. Depending on where you go of course.

mmm if you want stainless CPM154 is not a bad choice for hunting. My go to steel howeever would be CPM-3V or CPM Cru-wear. Both these steels are not stainless but dont rust very easily either. They are tough as hell and have great edge retention. Just store them clean and dry.

Be responsible with them, keep them in your room, and take care of them. Did you take care of that BARK RIVER? Hand it over. Gosh I didn't know CMP3v could rust. Mikkie really screwed that knife. Dexter Russell makes the best cost effective kitchen knives, in my opinion. For what you would pay for the Santoku knife, you would buy three different Dexter Russell knives. They hold a sharp blade for along time, they are comfortable, and the handles are anti-slip. Many chefs use these knives.

When I go multiple days to mountains/jungle/forest, high altitude, being prepared for survival condition but still lightweight enough to go fast, I would choose: 1) Leatherman Charge TTi (can replace the Victorinox pocket knife, Mora Companion backup knife and kitchen knife at once) 2) Tramontina (can replace the chopper knife and primary bushcrafter knife) which also good for batoning. I would love to bring Morakniv Garberg stainless steel, which is not only great for wood processing, but also safe for food processing. But I would not bring it since Leatherman Charge TTi and a Tramontina alone are already heavy, around half kilogram, and can cover he function of Morakniv Garberg.

Why is it that DBK so frequently selects favorite knives that would obviously fail the DBK abuse tests. Rubber handles cant tolerate batonning... leather stacked handles cannot tolerate batonning, but that is what you prefer. I would think your favs would be indestructible knives. Your own DBK Apocalypse looks to fit the bill, and I've seen you recommend it, but its very expensive. To that point you often recommend ridiculously expensive blades, not high value blades. Just curious of the rationale.

In fact, the best knife is the one, you can use at the moment. So instead of picking up the best steel, the best edge wear-resistance and so on, you have to pick up the knife, you can have with you all the time. For me and as a EDC it's a good folding knife, easy to maintain, stainless and max 55 HRC so it's easy to sharpen, max 12 cm folded, flat grind up high to the spine and with some pocket clip for concealed carry. For camping or hiking it's another story. Depends on where you live and what knife is legal to carry in you counry. Luckily in Czech republic, here can carry any knife unless you are in crowded places like or social events.

I am amazed the Skrama made the list, but as a No:1 Skrama fan I'm rather pleased. Thinking Man's golok, which translates into chopper and machete in one nice portable package. (I use candle wax to keep the rust at bay with what is after all just a quality carbon steel correctly heat treaed.) You have the bushcraft knives covered. Why no Combat, large sheath hunting knife? The Kar Bar type that once was the all rounder of choice. Kitchen Knives its Victorinox for me, but then I'm banned from the kitchen too (just expected to keep all the knives sharp). I said elsewhere if you have a SAK (Huntsman), Opinel (No:8), Leatherman (Charge TTi), Cold Steel SRK, Tramotina Machete, Silky Saw (F180), and GB SFA, then its a challenge to find something that can best them. However, its a lot of fun trying. You find gems like the Skrama, Chris Reeve large Sebenza, and Bark Rivers. Whatever the chase, however many £$€'s later, success or failure, its a worthy hobby and gets you out of the house testing it all. Thanks guys for adding to the fun of it all.

Okay, just this once, I will make a serious post. Because just this once, I actually have an informed opinion. Because every other time I post, I know nothing. Instead of the classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, I would recommend a modern multitool. My multitool of choice is usually a Leatherman, though Gerber, Buck, and many other manufacturers make multitools as well. Why do I choose the multitool instead of a SAK? 5: Bigger, sharper blade - Most modern multitool blades (say that three times fast!) have drop point or clip point geometries that are closer to a quality folding knife like the Opinels, and are larger than, the blades found in SAKs. 4. Screwdrivers - Most SAK screwdrivers barely qualify as such. But many modern multitools have larger, full-size drivers, and many tools have multiple screwdrivers, in multiple sizes, in both flat and Phillips style. Some larger multitools even have optional driver bit kits available 3. Wirecutters - Because not everything can be cut by a knife or scissors. 2. Pliers - because sometimes you just want to grab somebody by the nu... I mean, sometimes you have the need to grab something with a firm grip and hold it still, twist it, or break it off, and you can't do that with SAK scissors. 1. LOCKING. FRIKKIN. TOOLS. Because anyone who has ever owned a SAK (or any folder with a non-locking blade) knows the terror of a blade folding back toward your fingers. But most modern multitools have positive locking mechanisms on the blades, drivers, files, etc. to protect both our precious fingers and our fragile psyches. Of course, knife carry laws vary according to country and even by state/province/district, so the multitool might not be a viable option for everyone. In the UK, for example, it's even illegal to carry a block of sharp cheddar cheese on the street. In those places, the SAK may be a more practical or legal choice. But if you're in a place where knives are still considered tools and not WMD, the multitool is the way to go for the modern person. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong, your mileage may vary. BASTARDS!

You might be completely right! I've never tried a Leatherman. I used to hate them as a kid as I saw them as a victorinox imposter hahaha. However I've been looking at them more and more recently

Nice selection guys, nice to see how practical your selection was. The only thing I might change because of what I own is my leather man signal instead of victorinox. Awesome
