Forgot to mention in the video: When you create a contour map of your land, it's likely it won't be 100% accurate (as was the case with our land). Make sure to double-check in the field! Also, this is just a top-level overview of the design process. A lot more goes into this, but I hope it can give at least some guidance! Thanks. Here are the links & resources mentioned in the video: The Homestead Startup Checklist: learn.rootsreconnected.com/homestead-startup-checklist Google Earth Pro: support.google.com/earth/answer/21955?hl=en Contour Map Creator: contourmapcreator.urgr8.ch/ Canva: www.canva.com/

All interesting and having done a little qualification in Horticulture, looked at all the stuff like Geoff Lawton and the rest, worked as garden landscaper, I think rather than analysis paralysis and extensive planning. Look, observe, layout and drop some plants in the ground works much more fluidly, less concern, rather than being stuck on one design map and charts. If you want an effect of a landscaped hotel garden, then ok - but they also look a little unnatural.

I know there is a lot of work you had to be done but I was not aware of the sheer amount of information and analysis you had to gather and go through! I mean yeah... it is smart to do this and that but you actually took SO MUCH time to plan everything and be smart about your decisions preparing and planning for future development and possible (hopefully never happening) nature events that could make your life hard. You did a really good job and I am really proud of you! Thank you for carefully explaining this to us so we are not only dreaming about homesteading but also know, that it comes with a lot of logistic planning, which we tend to forget when we see your beautiful homeland!

I think it can be all to easy to assume that dreams just happen, instead of get created, and that the bigger the dream, the bigger the challenges. It can be so easy to become disillusioned with the dream without the proper research, and knowledge to keep building it. You're doing a great job showing that.

I never tire of watching what you create. Just a tip for when you get bees: place them where they get morning sun and afternoon shade. Seriously think about having horizontal hives, rather than vertical - it will save your back! Also, the bees are somewhat calmer in horizontal hives when you do your inspections, as you're not exposing all the brood at the same time. To encourage native bees as well, I would place them down towards the pond. This will discourage robbing by the honeybees.

You have given more than food for thought. The planning you did for your land is amazing and the tools you have shown us what one can use is a very useful tip. I have always known that if you buy a piece of land the first year watch all the elements in each season, rain, drought, snow (if you live in a place where it snows) and watch where the water catches or remains muddy etc etc. I wish there were more channels like yours that goes into the nitty, gritty from the beginning and how you planned the lay out. Thank you for sharing and look forward in watching your progression on your property with your beautiful family. Have a lovely Saturday and till the next one.

5:08 I work in estimating at a construction company and have been testing out this contour creator that you used here. At least in my area it seems that the accuracy is not all that great as it uses Google earth elevation api. It’s close- but trees, brush and other obstructions can cause anomalies in the contours, sometimes berms and swales/ditches can be ignored as well. Still a very cool tool and may work better in some regions of the world.

Wow, how impressive and inspiring. I have almost an acre of acidic, peaty and rocky land behind my house here in the Southwest of Ireland, once eaten bare by sheep, an ecological desert. My wish is to bring it back to life, to provide a bit of wild life which is still here some place to enjoy. I even found two melted water pipes, it probably was burned regularly, as it is still done here.
