🎥 On Saturday, the 10th of June 2023, I picked up Sam from the train station to show him around the city center of my town Den Haag (The Hague). While showing him around, I also asked him some questions about Den Haag to see what he already knew about this city. And all of this was in Dutch! He learned Dutch primarily by himself, partially by watching my videos. How great is that!?!

Hi Kim. This is a wonderful video. I listen to it in repeat while playing chess or doing stuff. At first I watched it carefully, just to know what you two are talking about, and then I just put it in the background, being like a kid who does not yet understand the language, but absorbs its sounds and rhythms. It happens just by listening over and over. In order to do that one has to let go of the fear of not understanding, and remember that understanding will eventually appear on its own, just like magic. Thank you so much. If one day I'll move to The Netherlands, you will have a great part in it.

Wow how beautifully said! It’s the way kids learn a language, just observing and absorbing it and feeling the trust that one day, they will manage it as well! Good luck and happy to hear you like the video!

That could work, but it would take a long time, because kids become fluent in the 1st languages after many years, and especially after they learn how to write and read etc at school, and they start by learning words individually when they hear them used in context, so it’s a slow process! If one is trying to get it done as fast as possible, actively learning many thousands of words by watching vocab videos (and then re-watching them over and over on maximum speed) over a period of time (and being very focused while looking at the words) and then observing how they are used in sentences by others and using them the same way is the best method! I used this method and I got to an intermediate level after only a few weeks, and I reached an advanced level in Dutch (over 8.000 base words) after 3 or 4 months (the months that I focused on Dutch, as I am learning multiple languages) and, I could understand almost everything in the video, and there were also a few new words as well, but I knew over 99.9 of those words, so I guess I am a quite advanced level at the moment! But I must reach a native speaker level fast because I think I am going to be moved to the Netherlands this year, so I must be very fluent in Dutch / German / French (at least these 3) and, I’ve been learning a lot of new words in German lately (my vocab went from around 1.500 to over 3.000 words or so, maybe even more) and, in July I will learn a few more thousands of words in Dutch, so I will study Dutch intensively over the course of two weeks or so, and hopefully I will reach a native speaker level, at least when it comes to vocab, because it does take longer for one to be able to form all sorts of complex sentences fast (for very easy languages such as Dutch, I think it takes at least 10 to 18 months of constant expōsure to the language to become fluent when it comes to speaking and speed) and to be able to understand everything without subs! Also, my protectors are the only beings reflecting superiority terms like king / prince / lord etc and I am The Queen / The Princess / The Lady / The Goddess / The Leader / The Star etc!

Memorizing many song lyrics in Dutch will also make it way easier for someone to form sentences, and always watching each video in Dutch with Dutch subs at least twice, or once with both English and Dutch subs, and then only with Dutch subs to really focus on the words and how they are spelled, and starting with simple videos for kids and videos with basic terms also helps a lot - I am advanced level now, but I still watch videos for kids such as Slemmer de Emmer and similar videos, because there’s always a new word (or a few new words) in each and every new video I watch, and it also helps reinforcing what I have already learned, because that’s how one’s automatic Dutch mode would be created, by seeing and hearing words and chunks and sentences etc used in context multiple times, and I have an automatic English mode and an automatic Spanish mode at the moment, so when I type something in English or Spanish I don’t have to think at all, because the words flow automatically, and I am soon to develop an automatic Dutch mode as well because I’m almost there, but it feels way more limited tho because I don’t know enough words in Dutch, and some words, I haven’t seen them enough times, so I can recognize them, but they haven’t become part of my automatic memory yet, but hopefully I will have an automatic Dutch mode by the end of this year!

Looking forward to my first visit to the Netherlands in a couple of weeks. I'm just really hoping that subtitles pop up (in Dutch, of course) whenever someone speaks, cos I understood about 75% of all that and got most of the context, but only because I could *see* the words as well as hear them. Without seeing them, I would probably have been lost! 🤣 I need to get around to starting your Dutch for Intermediates course soon too. I've got a bit lazy with my learning recently and have just been relying on maintaining my Duolingo streak! I can now understand quite a lot of Dutch, but still struggle to put a sentence together! Which is why I'm writing this in English. Sorry! 😳

It’s not easy to form complex sentences when one is intermediate level, but it does get easier and easier once one becomes advanced level in Dutch, and seeing those words being used in context a lot of times also makes it easier, plus it gets real easy once one really understands how words like daarvan / waarop / hiermee etc work and once one gets used to the sentence structure of sentences that have multiple verbs! When it comes to learning new languages, if one is trying to get it done as fast as possible, actively learning many thousands of words by watching vocab videos (and then re-watching them over and over on maximum speed) over a period of time (and being very focused while looking at the words) and then observing how they are used in sentences by others and using them the same way is the best method! I visited Den Haag this year and it was beautiful. The mix of traditional dutch architecture and the skyscrapers is really impressive. The international court of justice looks so nice too as long as you are not a defendend there. Will visit it next year again for sure. It felt like Amsterdam without the absolut masses of tourists (I know I am of the filthy tourists tho).
