I was here for my 27th birthday. I’d been to see Pearl Jam at the Milton Keynes Bowl on the Friday and, as I was already down south, figured I’d go down the Cambridge for the Duxford airshow on the Sunday while I was at it. On Saturday I had a day to kill and spent it in Cambridge. I drove up to Duxford that afternoon and got a great view of Saturday’s air show from where I was parked up (just near the Doodlebug track at outside the museum). Flying Legends is a two day event. Runs over the weekend. I had a ticket for Sunday Day 2. I parked up at the end of a long narrow track adjacent a farm field to camp down for the night. As the sun went down and I drank a beer, a solitary Spitfire flew into the airfield. That Merlin permeating that silent summer air was perfect. I felt really lucky. I was probably the only person watching.

Lovely to see all these vintage warplanes in flight. I volunteer at a Flying Museum, so I get to see lots of vintage planes from the USA. Almost never get to see warbirds from the UK, though.

Will Connor Think we both have pros and cons, however America is sooooo vast, seeing it all I can imagine is a bigger challenge. Having said that, I do think that Duxford is one of the best in the world! :)

Please tell me that the airframe movement in flight is really a quirk of the camera you are using?! I suppose it was fairly windy that day though......
@bannistator10 жыл бұрын
Amateur Spitfire Builder Hi there, the main jerks you're seeing are probably because of KZbin stabilizer effect. This is needed as you rightly say was a windy day, so the raw files were a tad shaky and got a bit of headache whilst watching it. Worth the compromise. I use a basic Panasonic hv-110c I believe (not to hand) however I may upgrade as I seem to get a lot of appreciation around the globe of which I'm very thankful for.

Hi bannistator! I think you were standing at the front and to the right of where I was at the time. I took video footage too but I just have an old Fuji bridge camera that can take low res 30fps. I am grateful to you for uploading a much better footage than I could capture. Did your arm ache after all that?! I thought you just had a remarkably steady hand! Wasn't that Bearcat nippy?

Zee Kusa But you get to see Duxford's old Hellcat and P-47 Snafu.... missing them sooo much already :(
@TheKusa59 жыл бұрын
bannistator Oh? we have Duxford's old hellcat where is it based? also Snafu is based out of Texas and i live in California so it never comes over here. we get some different P-47s though and some B-17s that's pretty nice
@bannistator9 жыл бұрын
Haha I make it sound like its your fault of which it totally isn't :) The Hellcat left for the US in early Feb, don't know it's final destination. Got no Hellcat or P-47 in Europe and still no P-38 in the UK. That said, I know we received the BF109 Emil and Chrome P-40C from the US last year, maybe in a swap deal sort of thing! :) Who knows, stay tuned.
@TheKusa59 жыл бұрын
I'd much rather see a BF-109 then a P-38 we have too many P-38s in the states. i think about 6 or 7 of them? its too bad that you dont have any P-47s though

+bannistator  Combination of the cam and propeller speed;  I.E; Prop revolutions per second and cam recording at equal to or close FPS, therefore the propeller appears to be standing still. Really don't care, tad annoying. It's the sound that is exhilarating.

Would anyone happen to know why there weren't 3 Corsairs and most other aircraft? Wen on the Saturday but a bit disappointed that I only saw 2 Mustangs :\
@bannistator10 жыл бұрын
Heroic Jackal heh you were luckier than me then in getting the nice shiny silver kittyhawk :) I don't know personally about the aircraft you mentioned, but was gutted too :( especially a day after the F-35 pulled out of RIAT, but still a great year for air shows.

Could someone tell me the story behind the extraordinary markings on the desert Tomahawk. It has the American Star on the fuselage but an RAF flash on the tail fin and also, it would appear, some numbers/letters half obscuring the American insignia.

Lend lease?
@adrianlarkins72599 жыл бұрын
Zee Kusa You could be right but it's odd to say the least. It's my understanding aircraft were quickly painted with their new markings as soon as the distribution had been determined. This one seems to be caught inbetween

***** ML407 is still going strong, sadly that guy passed away a few years ago now, but now his wife (carolyn) and son now keep it going in honour of both him and history. Off the top of my head, I think it was the first allied plane to score an aerial victory on D-Day! :)
@theymusthatetesla318610 жыл бұрын
So it's not OU V anymore, then. I knew she was doing some sort of 'whip round' thing at airshows for it. Wasn't the guy killed in a car accident, or something?
