DVD Player plays fine for about 14 minutes then freeze

Tracking down an intermittent fault.

8:47 I agree, the rotational frequency has hit the resonant frequency of the structure giving a high resonant "Q"; the way to alleviate this would be to add a small drop of light oil at the bearing/shaft interface which would act to damp the out the "Q". As the oil dried out you would lose the damping, but that would be easily alleviated by adding a little more oil. Edit 13:04, ah you suggested that. The thing to remember is that the oil is there primarily for the damping and secondarily to act as lubrication to prevent wear.

That's right and that's also why now it plays right out to the edge where the ribbon cable opens up. It uses to play about 14 min now it plays all the way to the end of disk.

Yes the 60hz zap was added in post. It was from a video I did about 5 years ago called time to say goodbye

They can last for a long time though. I have a neon clock which has a swinging neon pendulum, and the HV for that neon goes through a FPC and it has been swinging back and forth for 40+ years

I once fixed a CD player by swapping the spindle motor with the loading motor, they were both the same, those two look the same too, at least seen from the back.

Sometimes the spindle is the same length but usually the disk motor spindle is longer

​@@12voltvidsHey Dave it may be possible to swap the cable ends, set the compromised end on the other board which doesn't move. If you decide to try it I would make the cable roll as long as possible to minimize the flexing at the connection on the pick-up. They make the space limited (I think on purpose) to put more bend right at the pick-up which eventually causes the broken connection(s), anyway just an idea.

Hmm i thought the 60hz on your hand might of upset the read. I would pull the ribbon and look for black dots where the connector terminal is pushing against the tinned ribbon. Mind you, i've cleaned ribbons/connectors and the dam things still play up. Just my view with the dam annoying cd/dvd players.

Ur second idea which is oil in the bearings which u always do with noisy dvd players. Edit: I hate doing that tho due to how hard to get the syringe on the bearings when the rotor or spindle is close to the motor.

I have an older dvd/blu-ray player with very low hours on it. It will play for 10 minutes then stop playing. It does not freeze, it can still be operated with the remote it just goes to the player main screen (not video menu). If I hit play it will play. In 10 min it will go back to main screen. It will do this 1, 2, or 3 times then it will play fine all the way through. I have started it in different spots (beginning, middle, and end of movie) but it always does the same ting. It does it with different discs both burned and retail. What do you think it could be? Thanks for any help you might offer.

It's a long cable. Doubt it can be flipped. It's not straight but l shaped.

Could it be that the ways the carriage runs on weren't parallel to the disk (distorted plastic?), and as it played further out, the distance changed enough to be beyond the focusing ability of the lens? Maybe taking the motor out and putting it back in was sufficient to change the angle so as to make it nearly all the way to the end. Try lifting up on the carriage instead of the cable.

No I didn't change anything on the laser pickup. The motor is held in place by 3 screws do it isn't shifting either. The main fault dry bearing. After lube it plays fine right to edge of the disk. Just touch the ribbon cable and it fixes.

Just take one of the other motors off the other unit and use it as a spindle motor. They are all the same R-300 motors and would work just the same.

Interesting fault. I guess ribbon cables have limited amount of flex times, and when they fail, it's a death sentence to the device, if there's no spare parts available.

They shouldn't fail but they do. I have a neon clock that has a neon pendulum that the hv for the tube goes through an FPC like this and it's over 40 years old and has been swinging back and forth all the time never a failure. I think it is the degree of bend.

I have a Sony single disk CD/DVD player the drawer will only open when I smack the top on the bridge opens and closes perfect but only after I hit it, what's up ?

probably belt slipping, smacking it dislodges the magnet on the disk clamp

Don't mean to sound a bit stupid but would it be possible to tape some insulation tape along the length of the ribbon to help stabilise it

@@12voltvids thank you very much for your attention . This noise starts to bother you after about 15 minutes of operation. This noise is very similar to those old audio cassette tapes, the audio keeps popping and the volume loses its gain and the noise overlaps the audio.

@@12voltvids You didn't read my post correctly, no I don't have a replaceable cable, I was asking if these cables are available and where to purchase it.

@@lox_501 no you said if the ribbon is available why not replace it. I was being sarcastic saying oh you got one great send it to me because they are not available I don't know any place you would get one they probably were not available 30 years ago. These were parts that were available while the units were in production and as soon as that model what are the production those parts were no longer available. I have a nice bows wave radio with CD player that was given to me that someone dropped and they tore the ribbon on it not a snowball's chance in hell of finding one I might try to fix it someday just to see if I can make the CD player work although I'm not going to hold my breath on that one because it's pretty fine and it came with all the twisting going back and forth any repair on it even if I could make it work probably wouldn't last.
