It's definitely a nice looking machine. Love the flip down/up door.

It's even better that front panel lifts our as a corded remote so the deck can sit on a shelf, or further back on the desk.

You are an excellent engineer and you should fix the analog section of your beast.
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
Don't want to risk ANY damage to this. The only thing I will be using is the DV output and that works. To TS that board would require a full service manual. and even then it is probably limited to full board replacement and good luck finding boards. The difference between amateurs and pros is pros know when it is beyond their training and skill set and back away, where as an experimenter or amateur just tears in blindly. Since the unit is fully functional with the exception to analog out, and analog out os not required to capture video I am not about to go any further. Now if the firewire was also dead then the machine is useless and worthless so I would be more inclined to start ripping it apart, but what I need it for is working so I am leaving it as is. It will be used for every DV capture I have going forward saving my GVHD700 for HD captures. So yes it was a good buy.

That model well known for having bad SMD capacitors is a nightmare to have to replace done a few. Likely the JC13 board that causes that at least the couple that I repaired. The issue is a few when high ESR and leaking you have to replace all of them. Just hope no traces are eaten or components destroyed. Don’t get why people pay so much for them when you can get a decent HDV deck for around the same? I got a HDV deck full and mini size tapes low hours deck that was fully working lower then what one of these go for. Nice looking deck but if I were you fix it and sell it, they go for good money when serviced.

You should go for an Ampex VR2000 quadruplex 2 inch tape machine renovation project, but you need to get some more space in your garage for it to fit I guess. Phil S has a video on youtube about the process of loading a tape and doing the tricky alignment tuning. Name of the video is - two inch quadruplex tape. These machines are still used in Sweden and Norway to transfer old archived television programs to digital formats.

Hey Dave...have been watching tons of your videos...I learn so much...Thank You!!! Quick question....how do you find items for sale on "FaceBook".....? Did not know this was a Facebook option?
@mrpedrodrodriguezsr7628 Жыл бұрын
Unless you going to sell it, you don't need to repair this unit. I'm with you: the firewire works for dubbing videos to DVD or any other digital media, then no further work needed!
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. It lets me keep the hours down on my gvhd700 which is giving me issues. After it sits for a few days getting it to accept tapes is fun. I suspect a spliced tape went through and some residue stuck to the drum which causes it to stick to the tape at initial lace up. It tries to start drum and it sticks and kicks the tape. Pain in the ass to open I just spin the drum and it's fine. This one easy to clean and lots of room. In there. Also gives me the option to play big tapes.

Whats something like this go for Dave? And whats the value realistically. Cool unit for sure. Im gonna guess you paid $80 but I really have no idea.

50-100 I would guess. They were really expensive when new. This was probably closer to 3000 new bit that was 25 years ago.

Firewire connection is not recognised by computers, on this model, it is just for connecting to DV inputs on other equipment.

Sure is, must be your computer

This unit is fine for Computer firewire connection. The problem for PC's is that you need a Texas chip firewire board. Other chips have problems.

I've got the same unit (pal model) and the exact same issue ! I've had the opportunity to buy a DSR-30 (dvcam version of this deck) for parts cheap, and after testing the board, the issue is on the mainboard (the bottom card). I've spent hours on the schematics but couldn't narrow it down. Furthermore, there is no much access to work and doing test at the same time. It's not capacitors, I could tell you that much. My guess is it's one of the Sony IC. I'll take a look at it again when i'll feel like, atm too much time spent for nothing. Oh, and don't forget to rebuild the PSU before it goes boom, it happened to me -_-
@analogvideochannel4612 Жыл бұрын
Had the PAL variant of this at my old job and it tended to do a bad job at reading tapes that the sony and canon camcorders read fine. Not sure if it was just a bad deck or it has some different head configuration that doesn't work as well on consumer miniDV tapes being a DVCAM format (which used a wider track width) deck.
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
This is not DVCAM this is Consumer DV/MiniDV. Had it been DVCAM it would have had the badging all over it. This was a home VCR. It even has VCR+ timer setting.

@@12voltvidsI can see see this is a consumer home deck, a professional VCR wouldn't have Macrovision would it?
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
@@michaelturner4457 the professional decks have the ability to set the copy protect flag. I don't know if they output macrovision or not. I know the pro dat decks I can set the all, 1 or no copy flag on it.

@@12voltvids Oh you're right it's the DSR-30 pro variant of it that's DVCAM. Maybe it was just a dud deck then
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
@@analogvideochannel4612 dvcam did have larger gap heads as dvcam used a wider tape track so drop outs would be less impacting. As a result dvcam decks can not play consumer tapes recorded in lp speed, and playing DV tapes has the same type of compatability as consumer decks did interchanging tapes recorded in the LP mode.
@gillanland Жыл бұрын
I have never heard of "full size DV"...is it actually a DVCAM?
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
DV and DVCAM were available in standard and Mini sized. Most consumers only heard of MiniDV because that is what the camera used so they believe that is all there was but in fact both sizes were available. Mini DV and MiniHDV was only for cameras and walkman players. All the editing decks could accept either. Professional DV also used both MiniDV and standard size. This unit was released in 1997 and this was probably about 2000 or more Even in the used market they command some relatively high prices for units in perfect condition. The large cassette allowed for 276 minutes of recording on a single tape. 184 for DVCAM which runs the tape faster as the track width is larger but otherwise identical.

50 bucks. Could be worth checking the psu voltages?
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
Already done. There was more footage but it didn't make the cut. Something in the D/A is likely where the problem is, but even when these were being maintained it was always a board swap when something on a digital board was bad.

This was purchased as a tool to digitize tapes so that I don't have to run up hours on either of mt HDV cameras or GV-HD700 HDV deck. All I need is the firewire output to plug into the PC or DVD recorder to dump clients tapes. If it had no output then yes I would go deeper but no need to risk further damage to a very functional deck for transfer work.
