Thats funny how Voltron is seen as the first giant robot anime for the Americans, but for me as a French Canadian, the first giant robot anime that hit our tv's on weekend mornings and after school was Goldorak, or Grendizer in english, which aired first on july 3rd 1978 (on my second birthday by the way! Since i was born 2 years earlier on the 3rd of july 1976)...and Goldorak became my all time favorite robot instantly, i even still watch the show all the time...which made me realise that we (the French Canadian) were a few years in advance with the anime mania compared to you guys lol I must say that i love every anime and cartoons from the late 70's and 80's, Voltron, Robotech, Gundam units, Getter Robo, Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and many other amazing series like that are part of my dvd/bluray collection and i often watch them with my eyes and heart filled with nostilgia! Those were the best time of my life, i miss the 80's so much!

This is the treatment/quality ALL VINTAGE anime should be given! I wish ADV had done this kinda quality w/Sailor Moon season1&2 UNCUT versions

I know Hunk isn't doing a bad sign on the layout design.But it sort of looks like he's doing a 'up yours' to everyone. Loved the show when I was a kid have all the dvd sets except Black Lion. Gotta get around to getting that set thanks for the review Zaranyzerak.

Thanks for the info. I know there is tons of changes so it's hard to keep track. Guess I'll be buying the Black Lion set and see about the others later. I know WEP was having a sale on Golion 1 & 2 sets. If you bought both it cost about as much as one set and you got the 2 Voltron movie for free.

@pmgpc69 I had a feeling that they might've released multiple versions of the sets; maybe they re-released the sets in smooth tins and got rid of the bonus features and the episode booklet to maybe cut costs. Anyway, thanks for clearing things up.

@TheJr3008 I just purchased the 5 lion sets and they were all good except Volume 1 Blue Lion. I talked to amazon and I am waiting for the replacement to see if it is the same. Since I can't buy these in a store I won't know which one I am getting until it arrives. This is going to be pretty shitty if I can get the embossed fold out version since the other 4 I have are!! If they are going change the packaging at least mark it somehow so buyers know what they are getting!!!!

@TheJr3008 I think I have the one you are talking about.I've got the blue,yellow and green lion collections.Does your blue lion collection have a "smooth" surface on the front?Mine does,whereas my yellow and green lion have a "bumpy" surface on the front...and those fold out like in the video here,whereas the blue one does not.I've also noticed the blue lion collection that comes in a standard DVD case does NOT contain any special features.Just trailers for other Anime Works titles.

These sets are much nicer looking than the Australian sets by Madman which I have I do have Fleet of Doom from Media Blasters which is cool. Nice vid too mate.

Yup; mine has the "smooth" surface tin; not the embossed one. The DVD case is just the ordinary standard one; not the cool, fold-out one like I was expecting. And the discs don't include any special features; which was the deal-breaker for me. I just bought another one; it arrived in the mail on Friday, and it's just like the one reviewed by Zaranyzerak. I gave the other one to my 6 year old nephew, who only wants the cartoons anyway.

Cool review. Though you didn't show us the black booklet (though you were running low on time so I understand) and you didn't include the web address. I wonder if Peter Cullen himself can guess the connection between Transformers and Voltron.

It's 2021 And Will Say I Grew Up On Voltron. They're Is Another Box Set That Came Out In 2019 That I Just Found Out About. I Also Got The 2019 Box Set Along The Having 2 Copies Of Fleet Of Doom As Well. I Like The 2019 Box Set A Lot Better Since You Have Just The Cartoons Without The Extra Stuff. It Also Cost Less Than These Box Sets And Vehicle Voltron As Well.

I really don't see them ever doing a dub of GoLion, it's way too niche to justify the cost. At the very least, I'm sure we'll get a re-release of it with English sub-titles as we got before.

I didn't mean to add anything to your video, but just to mention it in the comment / answer to title26. And I give up, you're right about piloting the lion. I should have said "appearance" for 6 episodes. And the appearance has nothing to do with the blue lion, so it has nothing to do with the tin.

Good review, keep up the great vids...Did you know that hollywood is actually thinking of making a live action Votron and Thundercats movie. Since Transformers was a hit, and the upcoming sequel and GI JOE movie, Hollywood is scrambling to adapt popular 80s cartoons.

I guess Sven came back in the American exclusive episodes only as he wasen't able to come back in the original GoLion. :D Don't worry Toei knows how to bring people back to life ('cough Japanese Transformers cough) I've probably all ready said this, but the amont of Toei related shows you mentioned in the beginning was just awsome! :D Also, you didn't show us Black Lion's booklet, for shame! :D

I just bought the blue lion collection from an Amazon seller, and was shocked to see that the tin wasn't embossed, there was no booklet or extra anime works DVD, and the 3 discs came in a standard DVD case, not the one that folds out like in your video. The set doesn't look to be a bootleg; it looks like it came from the manufacturer. It just seems to be different than the one on your video. Do you know if different versions of these sets were made? Maybe “scaled down” versions?

I just got my Voltron DVD set a few days ago and I am enjoying them very much so. The only thing though is my Collection set 1 is a little different than yours. The tin itself is completely flat (i.e. no indentations) and the disks are in a regular DVD case, not the fold out envelope thingy. Oh, and disk 3 has different artwork than the other 2 disks and there's no extras... Can you tell me what that's all about? Apparently, it's an official release from Media Blasters but I'm a little confused.

3:53 I see you apparently had to trim the clip of the opening to the point where only the very tail end shows now, i assume this video must've gotten copyright claimed at some point. Likely from WEP/Universal I'd have to guess. Yeeeeeeeaaah...such a shame because that was a cool part showing the full opening.

Yep, you guessed it. That's exactly what happened. If it had just been a claim or whatever, fine. But they had BLOCKED the video worldwide because of that clip. Ridiculous. So I used KZbin's little editor thing to trim out the offending clip, and presto - the video is viewable again, if in "censored" form. Sigh. Such a great opening too.

@Zaranyzerak Wow, that sucks majorly. And i also noticed that part 3 of your review is blocked as well. I'm guessing because of the clips of the show that you used there. Funny, these three videos have been up here on YT for 14 years (Since the tins were relatively recent release wise, given the Black Lion set had came out a few months before) and now this happens to you...yeeeeeaaah it really is ridiculous. Blocking it all because of a minute long clip of the show's opening, wow.

I just ordered all 5 on amazon and got royally screwed on the last one, which was volume one. After happily getting the first 4 in their tin cans i was expecting. The last one came in a standard DVD case. Also, ironically was the most expensive of all 5 at almost 30bucks, while the other were well under 10bucks. Smh. How did you get yours to be the tin case version.

actally I started watching Golion, which was one of the two principle Anime series that made Voltron. I enjoyed Golion than I did Voltron.

I loved Voltron back in the day. I still like the plot, but the dialouge is terrible. I wish they'd remake this series like they did He-Man, and mix in elements of the Devil's Due comics. That would be so cool!

i loved voltron as a kid, but i cant seem to sit and enjoy the series now as an adult. ill watch the intro and once it starts ill lose interest. i think its kinda corny now. the lame storys...... the same goes for all the great 80's cartoons.
