Carpenter doesn't need to be compared to Hitchcock. He created his own style of terror. He's made some of the most memorable horror films of the 20th century.

John Carpenter is the greatest. His 1995 film In The Mouth of Madness is so underrated. Love that film.

I moved to the English Coast partly due to this movie. We have a sunken medieval village off shore and on certain foggy nights it is said by the locals, that if you listen, you can hear the ghostly submerged bells of the sunken church. We also have a famous devil dog who roams the area too. I absolutely love it!

The best ghost story movie ever. It's a great movie and scared the crap out of me when I saw it in the theater. I still have the VHS and DVD versions of the movie.

Why I love The Fog so much is because it's a classic Ghost story with real characters real people getting caught up in something so unexpected and terrifying that to me it's perfect and I'm not bothered what any snobby know all film critics might want to say to the contrary. Thank you John and the late gorgeous super talented Debra Hill ❤❤

Janet Leigh is right. These films are fascinating because they can be a most likeable way to be scared. The Fog probably earned my best respect for that when I first saw it as a kid.

Agreed. While I enjoy the story a lot, love the score (one of the best ever), I get sucked into the movie because the visuals/cinematography allow for such an immersive experience.

No way! I have never seen this. I am watching this tonight. I thought it was the Stephen king one?? That one is really dark, the ending is so crazy. But this, I am so stoked to see a new film, I love Carpenter. The Thing remains one of the finest films ever made. The Thing is probably the best horror movie ever made, it has everything good, tension, practical effects that are awe inspiring, yeah. Thanks for the video, I had no idea this existed! I confused it for another film for many decades, until today!

Saw this movie the first time when i was 13. Now i'm in my mid 30s and i still get chills when i hear that piano theme... I think what makes this movie so special was the lack of commerical it had. I mean in compare to movies like Halloween, Nightmare of Elmstreet or Friday the 13., this movie still is a insiders tip imo. Plus it was way more of a ghoststory instead of a bloody slasher. You weren't scared of those ghost seamen cause they were killing people. You were scared cause you couldn't really see them. They were like those dark shaped figures you see in your sleep. Things you can't see scare you the most.

Every time I hear that the Blair Witch Project is scarier than John Carpenter's Halloween, I want to wretch. That movie is such a sham, the only reason it was scary, was because of the marketing of it as found footage and being real, and don't get me started on the acting.

One of my favourite films of all time. It inspired me to try to buy a lighthouse North of Inverness, Scotland as a result. We managed to stay in the place and met the owners. Unbelievably, when we stayed with our dog, we had to let her out before we went to bed and noticed she was a bit scared about going out. All over the ground were what seemed like dozens of toads! It was an amazing place but unfortunately it wasnt to be...

Truly exceptional horror films - The Fog, Halloween, The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, The Exorcist, Sinister, The Nun, The Woman in Black and 1408 spring to mind - have a certain intangible element that you can't write, or photograph or generate on a computer. I can only describe it as 'atmosphere' - and it's what makes the difference between a good horror film and a truly exceptional one. Sadly, most modern 'horror' films rely too much on shock and gore and are, as such, entirely forgettable in my opinion.
