As near perfect a sitcom as TV ever had..THE high water mark for the genre, in terms of writing, casting, and a mirror of the times it was made, while still remaining timeless. The DVD show was, indeed, the television sitcom's Camelot.
@freeguy773 жыл бұрын
Your last point was much closer in some ways than many people think! Dick (at 35 on Dec. 13, 1960) was the most handsome man on television, and President Kennedy was just as great looking, at only 43, a full 27 years younger than the outgoing President Eisenhower. Mary, was absolutely gorgeous (and very talented in so quickly learning the fine art of comedy) at only 24, on Dec. 29, 1960. Of course, Jacqueline was just as gorgeous at only 32 (on July 28, 1961) Now, comes the really interesting coincidence among these famous couples! The day President Kennedy was inaugurated was Friday, January 20, 1961. The very same day, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" started filming its first episode! Although it did not air until October 3. The worst day in that golden era was, of course, when in the middle of filming "Happy Birthday and Too Many More" (aired on Feb. 5, 1964; seen after 1:16:40), the radio announced the president had been murdered on another Friday, two years, 10 months and two days after his inauguration. The cast decided there would be no studio audience, since no one was in the mood to laugh at such a sad time. The Dick Van Dyke Show continued its five-year run until the sad day it aired its final episode, "The Last Chapter" (Jun. 1, 1966, that I remember wishing it wasn't the end), as the series was my favorite of all the programs on the air then. I had watched it every Wednesday night since I found it in 1964. It would have started filming its first color season, in its 6th season, in Sep. 1966. I knew there would never be another series (even Mary's later named series) as great all-around as "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Oct. 3, 1961 - Jun. 1, 1966.

I grew up watching the Dick Van Dyke show. Literally. One thing I loved about this episode was that it showed such a kind bunch of people in every way, every time, yet these people were so human and so real. It was a great inspiration to me in my life. This was a great celebration of an iconic comedy classic.

I read an interview with Alan Zweibel, one of the original SNL writers. He said this show was an inspiration to him as well. He said he got into comedy writing because he wanted to work in an office with people like Rob, Buddy, and Sally. Unfortunately, the SNL office was nothing like the DVD office as so many of the SNL writers and cast struggled with drug abuse, including Zweibel.

I can not tell you how appreciative I am for this production documenting _The Dick Van Dyke Show._ I have been watching, enjoying and ultimately loving _The Dick Van Dyke Show_ since I was old enough to watch television. My perception and appreciation for the production and the cast’s quality, subtle genius and elegant quality - and even humanity - has only become greater in my estimation with my own age and maturity. I am also so pleased that you included so many of the minor and supporting cast, crew and production staff, people who I always value for their incredible talent whenever I encounter a television production I love but who rarely get the public credit they deserve. Thank you for shining a wide light on so much more of the Van Dyke show than, so far as I’m aware, has ever been illuminated before and allowing us all to enjoy its shining brillance.

I love that there is at least one blooper that they just left in the series. I think it's a first season episode. They are in the kitchen and Rob reaches for the phone, picks it up and begins dialing. As he's holding it to his ear, he flips thru the phone book, scans down a page, taps it with his finger and says "That's right!" or something similar. Anyways, the audience picks us on the goof and lets out a bit of a laugh, and he glances up at the audience with a grin but he carries on with the scene. It goes by so quickly one could easily miss it.

How you obtained interviews with the character actors who had just one or two appearances on the show was absolutely phenomenal. I wondered what happened to some of them, some of my favorites was Amzie Strickland and Herbie Faye… Actually they were all great. I always thought I was an expert on the Dick Van Dyke show but you absolutely blow me away sir. I wish there was a a live stream or open chat room where we can discuss different things and ask that all to important question… Was Mel Cooley married to Alan Brady‘s sister or was Alan married to Mels sister. I’ve heard it both ways. Once again thank you for this!

There are no words to convey the significance and talents of this show. It still touches a comic cord. How moving to see the family members of all these artists. As Fame came to them, they were not blindsided by it. The most important part of living took center stage: loving their spouses and their children.

2 more guest stars...Kathleen Freeman as the maid and hotel owner, and Jack Davis as the smarmy "Mot-zart" kid. Priceless!

Of course, Kathleen Freeman has passed and I was unable to find any interview footage to include. I was unable to locate Jack Davis.

@@dvdcommunications I couldn't find anything about Jack Davis, either. I wonder how many takes to get his scene done...I'm sure everyone was unable to keep a straight face.

The Dick Van Dyke Show is just incredible. I fell in love with this show as a little boy in the late sixties, when it aired on WLWT on Saturday evenings. It was my favorite comedy show then, and is still my favorite comedy. The cast was first-rate, and the characters they brought to life were very believable. The cast evidently got along well, and that showed. The show regularly gave us not one happy couple (Rob and Laura), but another happy couple as well (Millie and Dr. Jerry Helper). Plus it gave us a woman in the office who was an equal (Sally Rogers). I also liked Buddy, Ritchie, and Mel. Ritchie was a generally good, but definitely not perfect, son. Not to mention how humorous he was).

What a marvelous tribute! The audience focuses on the stars and easily overlook or forget the support staff who make the program, the comdedy, work,

Such a spectacularly wonderful show! Interesting to hear all the performers mention how family-like the show was and how talented everyone was. The DVDS was before my time, but I get to enjoy it on steaming channels. Interesting to see up and coming stars be guests. Great documentary. Hoping Hollywood give Dick Van Dyke a few more roles to play. I read he's 95 but still going strong. God Bless Him! Jeremy Clyde's memories were particularly poignant of Dick coming to set after giving an eulogy at Stan Laurel's funeral. Both Stan and Dick were brilliant performers.

One of the things that made The Dick VanDyke Show so beloved is that this was the first sitcom that was not afraid to show people displaying human foibles and awkwardness. This happens in real life. This show did not write its characters as having perfect thoughts or dialogue, and displayed more of a realistic depiction of how people were. This is something the audience could relate to.
