Thank you!! That's 10000% the reason I made the video. Everyone seems to just say, pedal x is best. But why? No one ever talks about the floorboards or other functions. Yes there is the Tama coil underneath the footboard. Even though I doubt it makes that much of a difference. But ya I wanted to document the actual differences.

Good info, brother. What made your video stand out to me was the MEASUREMENT! I currently play BOTH Iron Corbra & DW [rehearsal studio set & home practice set] I've adjusted the spring tension, beater angle/position as close as poss to each other & they ARE very similar; BUT, another factor I've come to realize in trying to get the 2 pedals to feel the same is the tension of the actual bass batter head has a lot to do with the feel of the pedal due to rebound; even though the pedals were identically adjusted, the pedals felt different exclusively because one of my bass heads was tighter than the other!! Took me awhile to realize & I was getting very frustrated trying to figure out why my feet played better on my practice set vs. studio set.....it's crazy how many factors play into pedal feel.
@johnathan.jerusik Жыл бұрын
Yes there are many factors. Found if I uses the Dw beater on the IC it felt like the dw. And if I uses the IC beater on the DW it felt like the IC. I liked both so much! I actually just got the double version of the dw5000xf and I love it! I almost went with the IC900 double but I really like the dw5000xf single pedal alot.

I didn't like the Pearls and I currently have a Trick Drums Pedal and I just cant get used to the the plats and Direct drive feel. So I'm down to choose between DW900 and KC 900. I'm not liking how the DW 900 has the spring on the inside and it kind of graces my foot. Thank you for you Video you clean honest compassion from a real person will help a lot of folks.

@fgonz1983 hey I went on the same journey! And thank you for the kind words!! I had the tricks and the dw9000s for awhile. To me the DW5000XF is like the iron cobra 900s and the dw5000 mixed into one pedal. I didn't care for the dw9000. It was almost too smooth if. I'm not sure if that's a bad problem but I like my pedal to have a little "fight" I guess. For direct drive pedals I really like the Tama dyna sync. For non direct drive I like the dw5000xf. Yes, I see the appeal of higher end pedals but I past a certain point, like the dw5000 series or the IC900, the cost compared to quality you don't really "gain" that much. Yes the trick or the DW direct drives have great quality with the full steel pedals and machines parts. But the cost can be really high. I say if you want longer boards the DW XFs come with an 11inch board. And most other brand make a long board that's are 13 inch boards.
@jackcampbell297311 ай бұрын
Would love to see your opinion between the dw5000 xf and the Tama Speed Cobra? Seeing as though that’s Tama’s version of a longer footboard pedal. Those are currently the two I’m deciding between without being able to really try them out and know for myself.
@johnathan.jerusik11 ай бұрын
The speed cobra has a 13 inch board. I haven't tried the speed cobras but I have played the dyna sonic. I really liked them. Thought they felt great. I will say even though the difference between a regular dw vs a dwxf vs a longboat is only a few inches, I do feel like you gain and loose some advantages. Shorter the board the more power more twack you can get. The longer the board the more speed you can get. That's how it feels to me. I like the 11inch board like on the dwxf or the IC900s because I feel like you still get a nice bit of control, speed, and power. Example, i actually had bought and returned the trick pedals longboards because I lost all of my power. Same with the higher end yamaha pedals. I forget the model its the one that looks like a race car. But there was no power. No matter how I set up the pedal. I could t get that umph. The 10 inch boards you get so much power but to some it feels "clunky". To me my foot felt cramped. The 11inch boards feel like I still get power and speed.

My 900 dual Iron cobra is coming tomorrow. I think a lot of people like to hate on the DW series for some reason it’s become uncool. So stupid, they make good pedals.

Nice review with some good valid point of views. I use 13 shoes so I went for the cobras. I had them for 15 years and still are like new. Rock solid and quality product. I have the double power glide pedal though, the only "negative" i can say is that the slave is not nearly as perfect as the main.
@johnathan.jerusik2 жыл бұрын
I think that's the case with alot of pedals. The canopus bearings make a big difference. I hated my dw7000 double pedal. Thought it was worn out and shot. I got the canopus bearing and the pedals is way better than what it use to be. More fluid and glides so much better. I'm no death metal drummer but I can keep a steady double easier now.

Thanks for pointing out the differences between the two pedals. It helps when your making a choice on a new pedal. I've had Speed Kings (2) ever since 1967 and they have never failed me on a gig. I've had a early Camco and it was very good but didn't hold up very well, though I liked the feel of it. So the interest in DW. I've been a playing professional musical since 1967. That says a lot for the Speed Kings. Tama from what I seen of your video and others is front runner with DW a very close second. Heres the rub; kick pedals ( And all equipment really) is" to know it you have to use it" under your working conditions to know if it's the right fit for you. So unbiased info is a big help in narrowing the field down.
@johnathan.jerusik2 жыл бұрын
I'm wicked happy I could help!!! I think alot of people forget that I'm trying to point out the factual differences. Like in all honesty I didn't feel that much of a difference between the IC900 and the dw5000XF. But everywhere I have read or video I have watched never really shown the real differences between the pedals. It took me having to buy all 3 with my own money and deciding what worked best for me. But the difference in the footboard and measurements can make the difference between the 2 pedals.
@jareddoran66053 жыл бұрын
I've always preferred the feel of DW pedals, despite owning various brands of pedals, including Tama. I was originally going to get the 5000s, but I was too indecisive between the accelerator and turbo models, that I ended up taking the plunge on a 9000 double pedal, as it's capable of both. Still trying to fine tune it and find the settings I like, but it's as solid as a rock. I like how it came with a set of straps, and I'm thinking about taking the chains off and trying out the straps. I think the 200 dollar price difference between the 5000s and 9000s is due to all the bells and whistles they flood into the 9000s. It's definitely one of those pedals you have to spend time fine tuning and adjusting
@johnathan.jerusik3 жыл бұрын
I love alot of the quality of the DW pedals. The IC allowed me to realize I did like the 11inch board vs the 10. But that also could be 100% my technique vs others. I have a dw7000 with the turbo cam so I was use to that but when I played the accelerator cam it added power to when I play. I felt like it allowed more consistently with my hits. I actually had a dw9000 for a little while and it was a great pedal but I had the same issue. I could not dial it in. I felt the cam never went fully turbo or fully accelerator. I ended up returning it. Strap vs Chain is incredible!!! I did convert my dw7000 double pedal to strap drives and I love it!!! There I a "lighter" feeling to it, but it's way more responsive! To me I think strap is the best option. Ok I'm going to try to explain what I mean. When ever you have a point of contact you create friction. So with a chain, every link in the chain crates a movable point of contact which causes friction and responsiveness to decrease. With a direct drive you have less, but! You still have a few points with contact that need additional bearings in order for the mechanics to work properly. With a strap it connects to the cam then to the footboard. The newer straps are made of materials that don't stretch and are stiff enough that they don't bend as easly while playing like. So in my honest opinion I say strap is probably the best out there.
@jareddoran66053 жыл бұрын
@@johnathan.jerusik what I'm enjoying right now about the 9000s is how robust it is. The thing is as solid as a rock, and I can trust that it's not going to move, or even deform. I think a lot of the not moving part has to do with the rubber on the bottom, but I feel like that, plus how dense the pedal is, it really just does not move when I'm playing it. I know there's a setting that feels amazing, because I've played a 9000 that felt godlike, but I don't know how it was set up. I feel like the 9000s are like Remo drumheads. Not entirely great out of the box, but the longer you spend tuning them and setting them up, the more they become better than the competition. I've had the pleasure of trying out DW's MFG pedal, and it's hands down the best pedal I've ever played, I just can't afford it
@mcmarine777 Жыл бұрын
I truly feel that at a certain point, there is absolutely such a thing as TOO MANY OPTIONS (hehe). I read about the ACD Darwin double pedal & I can't imagine trying to dial in 86 settings on a main & slave pedal. Insanity would ensue.
@jareddoran6605 Жыл бұрын
@@mcmarine777 since I wrote my comments, I swapped the chains on my 9000s out for the straps, and they snapped after one session, and their customer service did not help at all. Not to mention straining my back trying to adjust the beater angle (because DW likes to put the adjustment points in incredibly awkward places). I'm not one to be extremely negative, but I actually regret buying the 9000s. At least with the Darwins, the spring system has a meter on it, and it's so much easier to actually loosen and tighten it. Not to mention how compact it is, and how well thought-out the overall design is, and that it doesn't seem completely over-engineered like a lot of other pedals on the market (looking at you, Trick). Plus, Dennis just comes across as a genuine guy. I'd love to actually buy a Darwin pedal, but I don't have that kinda money. The Mapex Falcons felt good when I tried them, but I've never used one for an extensive period of time

It's funny because after I made the video, I started modifying my dw7000. And I feel like if you were to combine both pedals strengths it would be the ultimate pedal. I had to make the same choice and went with the Iron Cobra Power Glide. I feel that the fit, finish, and playability of the Iron Cobra is superior. I can go from very hard hitting to soft playing very easily with the Cobra and it feels very smoothe and silky to play. The DW 5000 felt a bit sluggish to me and actually took more effort to play. However, that's just me and YMMV.
@johnathan.jerusik Жыл бұрын
The ic is an amazing option! I like the dw for that reason. I wouldn't call it sluggish more, ok great example. The dw is like a machete and the ic is like a fliet knives. The ic is fast, and is very precise. The dw is more power more punch. But I feel like that also comes to the beaters. Like when I did my experiments I switched the beaters and it was hard to even feel a difference. I had played a ic200 single chain drive with the bigger beater and it felt alot heavier than the ic900 version. To me if I'm playing doom and rock the dw has that extra weight where is I want to play fast the ic really does shine there. But there are plenty of people who play fast with dw and plenty who play slower with IC

The Iron Cobra absolutely has a sprocket. Look at the top of the cam where the chain is clamped down and you'll see the sprocket poking thru the chain. The real difference is the Tama has felt under the sprocket to reduce noise while the DW doesn't. You can buy different cams Power Glide, Rolling Glide (chains) and Flexi Glide (strap) to make the pedal however you like. Besides the drum key the bearing at the top of the spring is far superior to the plastic sleeve that the DW uses. That bearing also makes it easy to just lift the spring off of the shaft to take tension off and lay the beater down to store it in its case. And speaking of cases, the Tama comes in a hard plastic case and the DW comes in a soft bag. I own and use both but the Tama is just an all around better pedal IMO. The 7000 vs 900 is a much better comparison to me. Thanks for making the video!

I agree with everything you said. My main point in this video was try too highlight difference that I have never seen in any forum, or online anywhere. I didnt not see the teeth on the IC I had, dosent mean they weren't there, my main thing was I bought these pedals with my own money and returned what didn't work for me. Maybe the newer IC have just a screw system. That's what mine looked like. But again I didn't want to "ruin" anything. Personally I love taking stuff apart. I converted my dw7000 to belt drive and love it! And yes the IC speed ring system is something I forgot to point out. That alone make a huge difference in how the pedals play. I did that upgrade to my dw7000 and man I need to do this to my dw5000xf. I cannot recall the dw system if it's plastic. I know its a ball bearing and just kinda blah. For the case issue. I have heard pros and cons of both. Some people hate the hard case. I thought it was a great addition. But thank you for liking the video!!

Are the beater shaft diameters the same for both brands? Can I put a DW beater on my Iron Cobra 900?

Yes you can! And actually that was a test I did after I recorded this video. I found when I did that the playability was almost I denticle. The "weight" or "clunky" feeling that the DW has, went away once I used the tama beater. I don't find the DW clunky. I do feel like it has more umph, but once I put the DW on the tama it has very similar umph. The main difference I found was the footboard. That's why the XF by DW was perfect because it was like the 2 pedals came together.

Based on how much of the threads I can see, it looks like you have your spring really tight. I keep mine almost as loose as it can go. My pedals (old DW 5000 single chain) don't have the rocker thing under the spring, and I've never even come close to breaking a spring. Beyond that, I don't know if the rocker is very useful, like if it affects the feel enough to matter. Pearl was the first company to make a sprocketless chain drive pedal, back in the 80s. I had that before I got my DWs, and it's hard to say what difference there was, if any, as we're talking about two completely different pedals. I did feel the DWs were slightly smoother overall, but whether or not that can be attributed to the sprocket is questionable. My DWs had the Accelerator sprocket, but as my technique improved, something about it didn't feel quite right to me. I ended up switching to the Turbo sprocket. It just seems to do what I expect the pedals to do, whereas the Accelerator felt like I had less control, and any gains in speed or power were negligible. I also got rid of the DW beaters and switched to Trick titanium beaters, which made a huge difference. I still prefer my single chain pedals to any double chain - they have a much lighter feel. I want to try strap, just because they require less maintenance, but I don't like DW's strap drive. Unfortunately, the Sonor Perfect Balance is single pedal only, and the Darwin FTW costs too much.
@johnathan.jerusik3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback!! I agree my spring tension was too tight! I have since loosened the spring tension and it has become way better!! The accelerator vs the turbo I can see what you mean. For my style foot technique I find when I hit with my heel I get a bit more umph. But im not anti turbo! The dw7000 is a turbo. To be fair the spring I had on my pedal was really really old but it also could be that I had it to tight as well. I havent played many pearls so I can't say to much on them. I wish more companies did a single chain. I was playing the lower end iron cobra the 200, and it was great! But I could tell if they did a put lower quality parts on it. I would like to try the dw5000 single chain. That looks fun! I am currently converting my dw7000 to be strap drive. And it is not easy which stinks. I wish the dw9000 wasn't the only model that can convert to strap. For the beaters I do have the new DW beaters that have the adjustable weights. That's the next deep dive is trying different beaters. I have heard those low boys, the wooden ones, are really nice

I own the previous Iron Cobra and the current 5000. I have to say the 5000 was disappointing. The pedal felt sluggish with no real power even with the spring tension maxed out. I bought a second hand 9000 and the tension spring was upside down. So I decided to do the same thing to my 5000 and it made a huge difference. Now the felt doesn't fall out. I still prefer the Iron Cobra because of the adjustability. The beater angle and pedalboard angle are independent which makes finding the right set up for you very easy. With the DW 5000 you can do that. You are locked into what DW want the set up to be. Removing the chain just to adjust the pedalboard height is annoying and hard. Also the beater angle is limited. All features into consideration the Iron Cobra is cheaper, more adjustable, comes with a case. The DW 5000 is more expensive, less adjustable and has no case. So IMO the Iron Cobra is the winner the DW is a good pedal yet for the money other companies offer more value. I do like my 5000 it just the pedal I reach for the least.

Yes, I agree with the difference. And it was hard the dw5000xf was like the closest I could find that was like a marriage of each pedal. There are so many positives about each pedal. I loves the IC alot. I actually just sold my electronic kit so I do t care about the foot clamp as much.
@mcmarine777 Жыл бұрын
@@johnathan.jerusik Has anyone ever mentioned that the IC spring adjustment is much easier to equalize when the double pedal is used? The DW spring tensions on a double pedal could be really differently tensioned & you'd never really know unless you can eyeball the amount of threads on top of the barrel OR turn the pedal upside down to look down into the barrel. The IC you can put your finger under the barrel and gage how equalized the 2 spring tensions are. Im surprised one of the companies hasn't completely revolutionized calibration of both side spring tensions for slave pedals.

The Cobra does have the cam teeth, only three or so, but it seems to be plenty, i’ve been playing / giging my Iron Cobra for 17 years, I’ve rebuilt many DW5000 petals for my friends in this time, some of them multiple times. Not my Cobra though, still all original.

Dw 5000 has heavy feel to my foot even after hours of adjustment, , iron cobra is much better although i finally choose the speed cobra 910 series
@johnathan.jerusik3 жыл бұрын
I still have to try the speed cobra. But you know what I did recently, I "upgraded" modified my DW7000 double pedal. I put speed rings on, I converted it to strap drive. And I used the newer DW beater heads with the adjustable weight and that made a huge difference. When I did try both the dw5000, and the IC I did swap the beaters between the 2 and found alot of the heaviness I felt was from the beater. That's not an exact science, and maybe like I mentioned in the video the dw has like a sprocket type system, vs the IC dosent. Also maybe the hinges used? But alot of the difference I found was in the beater. I play alot of "doom, stoner, rock, metal" type music. More like Amenra, Neurosis, the sword, kind of feel. With the dw beater I felt I also got a bit extra umph. But when I put the dw beater on the IC I got a very very similar feeling. Wasn't 100% but it wasn't enough where one felt drastic. I think at the end of the day both are amazing pedals. My main issue is not alot of companies, including Tama, and DW don't list specs. That 11inch board is a world of a difference. My dw7000 have a 10 inch board (non XF) and I can tell when I do a heel toe, or something that I would normally do on a IC or a DW w/XF there's a good difference how I have to adjust my technique to compensate. But anyways I really need to try the Speed cobra. I know Ben K from converge uses one he loves his

The one huge thing that wasn’t even discussed is the HINGE! Play both pedals for a month, than you’ll notice how loose the Tama hinge gets. You could literally swing the footboard side to side. I use DW for the ball bearing hinge alone. It stays sturdy and does not loosen or move. Even brand new, you could probably wiggle the foot board side to side of the Tama. Just a massive difference in quality….

Now this latest Gen of the cobras felt great but when I played the regular dw5000 I was like ok that fells great, and solid! That's why ultimately I did go with yhe XF version because that extra inch makes a world of a difference. I like the normal 5000, and in a double pedal I'd probably do the non XF version. But in the single the XF just feels solid!!

@mcmarine777 Жыл бұрын
I remember when that "Delta Hinge" came out & it was a big deal w/a huge price factor that many chased because if you play in a fashion that forces side motion to the pedal, that hinge would loosen up. I never needed to get one, but I believe in the concept & reason. Ive always played a double pedal & more of an issue is the drive shaft hinges. Oh, btw, one cool option with the Iron Cobra, over the DW, is that you can change a Right-hand double pedal into a LEFTY. Random, but good trivia you might use one day... hehe.
@mikestein10242 жыл бұрын
Playing action I’d pick ic over any of them they feel more connected and responsive to your feet all of dws pedals have a rolling smoothness and a looser rebound where the cobra will react more naturally and the foot plate will stay connected to your foot better when you want that last bit of power at the end of the stroke the ic will perform that much better I’d say the iron cobra is the most natural feeling pedal out there but if your into grind core / death metal etc you might want direct drives or axis pedals but for rock and pop guys they’re gonna feel to loose and light but whatever the style you won’t be let down with anything iron cobra
@johnathan.jerusik2 жыл бұрын
I can see that. The ic and the dwxf to me felt alot closer. The cobra coil probably also helps. Plus to me the power glide and accelerator cams felt very close. @@thodoris3790 yes I did. I felt the sweet spot on the xf version of the 5000 was a bit lower on the footboard. Like I loved the normal 5000, but my toes actually hit the chains when I was playing the pedal. So, I have played each pedal for about a week straight. One week on the Tama and one week on the dw5000. The ic900 vs the regular dw5000 yes the ic900 played nicer and smoother. That's actually why I made this video because I didn't understand why. Learning about the 10inch footboard on the dw vs the 11 inch on the ic 900. Also I play usually with socks or bare feet so I wouldn't ruin the pedals with shoes. Mostly because I did end up returning them. I don't make enough money to keep all of them. And I did pay out of pocket for them. When it came to the dw5000xf the difference between that and the ic900 was almost non playing wise. When I swamped the beaters between the ic900 and the dw5000xf each pedal actually felt like the other version. I'm not a heel toe player in the way of like a death metal drummer, I play heel toe more for punk and hard rock. More for accents and hardcore style. Some people do that with sliding their foot. I learned using heel toe. I hope that clears anything up. If not let me know!

I didnt care for the 3000 or 7000 or 9000 I didn't even want to drop the money on the MFG so I can see your argument. The 5000 series to me is the only good series for the DW.
