I know this is 5 years old, but now you can tame stray animals found in towns by pressing "H" while standing near them. I like to tame about 20-30 dogs and start hunting down monsters. A good 15 dogs can (in my experience) kill a male lion, though you will likely lose 3-5 dogs. You can use this with any stray animal btw, so if you find a herd of stray elephants in a town, you definitely want to try taming them.

I wouldn't recommend specializing in any weapon, since you don't know what your best available weapon will be until you find it. You can specialize later, start out well-rounded in the basics and you'll do fine.

Betterexs The wiki is needed to be open in a different window for a good while i find due to the overhanging learning curve. That said, DF is an amazing game but you have to give it time and embrace the true open sandbox nature of it. The fact that you can start a fortress with a handful of dwarves, delve greedily and deep for centuries untill it rivals moria (good luck with that), then get bored and strike out as a dancing minstrel to tour with your trade in an ever changing world is something i'm glad didn't exist when i was a kid with infinite time.

now ive edited the raws and created a humanoid race with four arms and two biting tentacles the size of my lower legs coming out of my shoulders. it flys. it doesnt need a head to live so its a very cheaty adventure class i made to mess around with. very interesting to grap someone by the upper arms with the tentacles and shake them around. choking the throat with two arms. grabbing the legs with the other two arms. when im faced with a group of bandits you can literally strangle 6 people at once.

Right. We need to combine those two. A world simulator and a story text generator. I think it might be possible to reflect the world to the text, but we'll also need to make the text get applied to dwarf fortress world. For example, arguing in the text may actually cause a fight in the game, or if they agreed to follow you in the text, they actually should follow. That's more challenging...

one thing your missing out on is legend mode to use alongside adventyure mode this way you can see which civilizaiton trades what YOU CAN SEE KILL LISTS WHO HAS THE MOST KILLS IN THE WORLD AND TRY BEAT HIM OR KILL THE HIGHEST TIER GUY LOT OF PEOPLE DONT KNOW ABOUT THIS

you can look really scary to NPCs if you do it right. Sometimes after I kill a foe and there's more nearby I'll lick the blood off my weapon for dramatic effect

Other than role play, if you want to become a vampire, or a wear creature, or most other types of night creature, you do so by drinking the blood of one and licking your weapon after slaying one usually does the trick. You can also partly sate your thirst by licking things that have been rained on if I remember correctly.

I just played my first character. He was a wild boar man who died fighting a camp full of goblin bandits. His hands got too injured to use his axe and crossbow (I think, either that or I just couldn’t operate the UI well enough to reequip them after dropping them) He gored and bit three goblins to death and bled out trying to strangle the last one. I love this game.

The Lost Treasure of Krug the Falcon Slayer: Krug started his adventure in a small village where the locals told him there was a lost treasure in the mountains to the south. Krug came upon a falcon as he traveled through the forest towards the mountains. Krug ask the falcon how it was doing. No response. Krug ask the falcon if it would join him on his journey. No response. Krug poked the falcon with his spear. It died. So Krug continued his journey to the mountain. Once there, Krug encountered 6 ravens. Krug ask each of them if they could take him to the location of the lost treasure. No response. So, Krug shouted, "It is well know that I slayed nameless the falcon!". All 6 ravens flew away. The treasure remains lost to this day. The end.

I've watched a few of your adventure mode videos and it seems like you tend to die soon enough by chasing after something too powerful for you to really handle. The one exception I remember was a vampire run where you basically just slaughtered an entire town. Any tips for playing it safe enough to eventually succeed in taking on big baddies like dragons?

Yeah I’m too impatient. You can slowly work your way up to being pretty powerful. Also, make sure you find some good steel gear. That can make a huge difference

my first adventure mode game was earlier today (I figured I should do some research into the game mode to try and avoid dying before setting out) I was a human outsider who started in a dwarf town. I wandered around a bit until I came across the mayor who was in a room with a potter I asked the mayor if there were any problems they said their daughter was kidnapped the potter told a joke in response I asked if there was anything else the mayor said their son was also kidnapped I offered my condolences the potter complimented the mayor on their shoes the mayor returned the compliment in regards to the potter's hat the potter told the mayor to save their flattery so the TLDR: I was trying to get a quest from the mayor and the town's potter was trying their hardest the derail the conversation at every turn

There is no need to kill everything, you can just go telling the great stories of your Fortress, end up in a bandit castle and die or try to get to another Fortress in a untamed wilds sabanna and get ambushed by giant lions and die. This game is awesome.

They're pretty different from each other, learning one doesn't really help with learning the other sadly

i disagree, you can learn about how the dwarf fortress world actually works with it.

Some commands are similar, you have a z screen, you look at things wit the same command, heck, when you build in adventure mode you are basically using the same commands. (at least for zone designations, not the building which is actually easier to do in adventure mode) (Yes you can build in adventure mode now). You can learn how the world "works". Also as mentioned, the symbols are all the same etc. You can look at things abit more deeply, see what the underlying simulation is actually doing. I think its very useful for learning how dwarf fortress actually works. All those things moving around on the world map are also doing that in fort mode, you can intercept armies, you can see how things actually work. I think a person who plays primarily adventure mode will have a better understanding of how all the underlying systems in dwarf fortress connect to each other. This lets play for example, i dont think its actually going to help someone "play with" adventure mode it may be a simple explanation but there is alot more to do, alot more going on, then he covered here. They never even showed off sneaking, and the new actual completable quests (called agreements now, you get them from lords, and its an actual quest that shows up in your quest log that they ask you to complete) They didn't show how to become a hearthperson, and what that means, they didn't show that you can become a bandit (and actually join the bandit group as a lieutenant ye syou can do that) Or you can be a bard and actually get famous and perform at taverns and get free drinks for it (you can rent rooms in taverns and buy drinks and the tavern keeper actually gets a mug fills it up and gives it to you and you have to pay them back ) (Lol, can you tell i rally love adventure mode :P )

Late reply but if you're still interested, that's simple enough. Just pump up those social stats and whatever skill you want the Bard to specialize in. You can find ways to monetize dancing or poetry, for instance, and make your fortune that way. Bards are gonna spend more time in towns than warriors or the like and be more frail due to not specializing in combat, of course.

What do you mean with get out? Did you start in a Fortress and can't find the way out? If so, press T travle a few tiles and then go back to the Fortress. You should stop at the main stairway.

I don't know if you will cover this later in the video (19 minutes in at the moment) but filling up a bag with water is much more efficient than filling up a waterskin with water. A bag can hold 100 units of water while a waterskin can only hold 3.

I just ran my most successful adventure, I invited a lady crossbowmam and went to try my luck against a few bandit camps, the first camp went alright, unfortunately Schade (crossbowmam) bled to death, may she rest in piece. There just isn't any. The tilesets people have made (iv'e found) are good for helping you understand what the hell your looking at to begin with but after a while they actually became clunky and confusing. Once I got used to the basic layout of the world, towns, caves and hamlets etc I found going back to the original graphics much easier and play became much more fluid and involving. This sounds odd but I could "see" more. What you need to remember when you want to play a game like this is that you'r not going to get a visually pleasing experience that will get your gfx card humming, it will however get your cpu humming as it simulates an entire world that is yours to explore as you please. Meph's tileset is a good one to start with and is also helping with the Steam version and it's easy to install, also you may want to try the starter pack. (:

Adventure Mode can be fun, but typically, when I play it, I have a bunch of easy fights and then I get ambushed by someone who is so impossibly good that I can't even hit him. (And no, I don't go after hydras! Heh, heh.) There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. It's just easy or impossible, one or the other.

So I used a dragon ball mod, was a god of destruction... turns out you are damn near invinsible... Unless anybody ever hit you. So I have now killed a king, basicly claimed all his land as my own and claimed to be the dead King.... I did not fail. Then I start a rumor that I killed the king... I failed. Also fun thing, I killed the king next to his guards who did NOTHING. So I managed to anger a dwarf girl by well... her being in a drunken mood. For the first time in mayby 10 years my character get HIT. I got cut on my arm and she sprained it an artery goes louse... but it get worse. Somehow she hit me again and this time my throat. If you played dwarf fortress adventure mode you know that people can survie some pretty nasty shit. CERTAINLY NOT A GOD! I then bleed out to death by this little girl, the God of fucking Destruction that killed anyone who defied him got killed by a DRUNKEN GIRL. I have you know I love this game.
