Interesting you should bring this up. Just yesterday I started playing a new fortress of the pre-steam classic version. There will be some videos out presently. 😊

Usually they've been officially calling it the premium edition, though everyone else tends to call it the steam edition. To the point about crashes, they did release some updates to deal with some common crashes related to widescreen monitors, though it may still be a bit unstable.

Thanks Bobbias! I think I've figured out what has been causing the crashes in my main premium edition game. Removing a tomb zone is the culprit, in my case. So...I won't do that. ;-) Not until I've heard it's been fixed, anyway.

I've been calling it slop edition because dwarf fortress isn't a kind of "game" where graphics should affect the actual experience at all. All dev needed to do was make shortcuts more cohesive, maybe implement command system with autocomplete, letting you merely type things. Now it's just garbage.

Hi! From what I see out there from hard fans of Dwarf Fortress, almost all of you guys like classic version more. But, I'm really a new player to Dwarf Fortress. So I want to ask opinion from you. Do you think it's better for new player to try the classic version? Because it's quite hard to see the character etc... So, I want to know about how much time I needed to be adapted to this kind of graphic, because it seems the overall experience, features seems better on classic ( based on reviews ). Thanks.

Hi Daryl! I think you should play the graphical version. There are a lot of inconsistencies with the classic version interface, and very little mouse usage. There is a way in the new version to toggle to the old ASCII graphics, which will give you the feel, and help you get used to understanding them, if you really want to do that. For the old-timers, like myself, we are comfortable with how it “used to be”.
