I feel like watching this alongside your tutorials is especially helpful. I don’t feel so scared of playing dwarf fortress anymore. It also shows me that the whole game is not just something immediate, it’s a process. Thank you for your videos!

@@Luredreier Oh? I haven't played DF in something like 15 years, so I'm hazy on all the old details and I was never particularly good at it. How would you do that? Just a new expedition to the same area?
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
@@coreymccammon152 No, not exactly. Instead of picking a location you pick the reclaim option on the world map and pick between different abandoned forts, your own or those of NPC factions. Of course if someone settles in your fort and it's no longer empty then you can't reclaim it, you'd have to attack them and drive them out first in order to reclaim it. Buy the steam version and look through the options in the menu after world generation? You could also reclaim something built by goblins or humans or elves etc if you find something suitable from what I understand, although I've never tried that.

felt wrong for me as well but i guess it makes sense because in this game you'll be scrolling in between levels way more than zooming in and out, i usually stick to a zoom level for awhile and sometimes adjust and leave it, say you build some stairs to a lower level, using scroll is quick, as if I were to reverse the settings, I'd have to hold CTRL scroll, I guess i got used to it like this now lol my only issue is when i open a menu and i'm trying to use scroll to go through the "list" which instead takes me through the ground levels, then realizing that the menu itself had displayed all items without any of them being scrollable.

I've been watching your tutorials. The biggest barrier to entry in this game is that the game is so dense. For example, I've had the game for about a week now. Yesterday, watching one of your 3rd tutorial, I realized I needed nest boxes for my chickens. Up until then I just kept wondering why my chickens weren't laying eggs. Then, I had to watch the video again because I assumed the boxes would be in the carpenter. It's a plus and a minus for the game, and your videos are a lifesaver.

So much DF content Nook i love it. Im up to a 204 population fortress and when a 2 headed monster arrived he got destroyed by my war dogs pastured at the entrance of my fort together with my mostly iron armored 30 soldier strong guards. Then my second siege arrived and the bastards found a way over one of my walls and slaughtered a bunch of my animals. They paid with their lives. One thing i noticed though is that the order to pickup items dropped from the dead keep getting forbidden eventhough i set it to gather. Not a big problem i just unforbid using the icon on the bottom right of the toolbar and see it only as a slight annoyance. Im at the end of year 107 though so going great. Keep up the amazing work.

A very .umm.. cheesy way of getting more barrels. Ofc, it works similarly to the way of starting with a bunch of bags (buy 1 of each seed type) &c, which a lot of veterans do ;) The reason to prefer bags over barrels is simple: barrels (or equivalents) are easy to make almost from start: just use rock pots. Bags require cloth, which may not be so easy to quickly come by initially: it's at least a 2-step process with a waiting period while the pigtails or WHY grow to be harvestable

Is the list of deities fixed (after they're generated during world creation) or does it start only with gods known by your dwarves, and get expanded when new people (who worship other gods) arrive? I think it would be interesting to organise a fortress "per god", assuming you get a good mix. Ex., god of forests and animals on ground level, then a level dedicated to a god of war (with barracks and forges producing weapons), maybe a level above dedicated to a god of knowledge (with libraries, etc.), a deeper level dedicated to a god of the underworld, and so on. But if the list gets updated when new people join, you might end up having to move things around a lot.

@frestdjm
@frestdjm Жыл бұрын
Smooth walls can eventually be engraved, adding to room/fortress value. smoothing also raises the relevant skill- you don't really want to skill your dwarves on engraving (which produces poor quality engraving) and instead just have them smooth everything to skill up, then do engraving from a high skill.
@ipnade

@snafu2350
@snafu2350 Жыл бұрын
Just like RW, smoothed natural stone is tougher than even dwarven-constructed walls (plus built constructions may be destroyed by some top-lvl 'building destroyer' monsters). You can carve fortifications into it directly too; no need for the sometimes finicky different 'construct wall' then delete it to 'construct fortifications' task when you realise that's what you need in that spot: just smooth every natural wall then it's only 1 task away from becoming a fortification* Admittedly, constructed items are more desirable (wealthier => 'beauty' => happiness-making) than polished natural rock (& constructed walls are automatically smooth, making climbing more difficult), but frequently you don't want your wealth to grow (again, just like RW) due to its increased raid power & attraction *Don't auto-engrave (via muscle memory/game brain auto-tasking) smoothed walls unless you're absolutely certain you'll never want to use them for any other purpose: engravers get seriously unhappy if you destroy their pretty pictures by turning them into fortifications! :)(
@RFC-3514
@RFC-3514 Жыл бұрын
Why would it feel odd if you've played Rimworld? In Rimworld smoothed walls / floors also have high beauty and more hit points than constructed walls. The main downside is you can't run wires through them, but there are no wires in DF.

I turn off tallow of one type so I keep some for soap, but all the rest of the meat/fish/other stuff is set to cooking (the steaming plate icon rather than the mug which is drink). I go through the plants and decide which will be cooked (no seeds returned) and brewed (get seeds back.) You can cook some seeds in extreme need also. AND you can use drinks in cooking which typically bulks up your meals a bit. But be careful cooking with drinks since they are crucial. Maybe just set one type for cooking use if you have plenty. I prefer to bulk up my drink supply a lot, then if it gets extreme use a bit in cooking if needed. As far as raw food sources, fishing, butchering dead animals (from your animals, hunted, killed by whatever), cleaned fish (must be cleaned in fisher shop after caught), farmed plants/shrooms, and gathered plants/shrooms. A great way to get a lot of early food is to embark with at least one dwarf with 5 skill in herbalism. Use the gather plants command to designate an area and set tasks so only those marked as gatherer do the job. Unskilled dwarves are very slow at gathering and only produce 1-stacks if any until their skill gets trained, so not worth the labor. This way you also so what grows naturally in the biome and can get local seeds to grow "outdoors" topside. You can start with zero food and drink in this game, in biomes with more that sparse vegetation, and do fine using proper skill planning and labor focuses. Though if the biome is really nasty it's close to impossible since you need a lot more outdoor topside time. :)

How many people can you have in a fort and how many forts can you have? Also can you disable moods like you can on RimWorld?
@Nookrium
@Nookrium Жыл бұрын
There's a cap in the settings (default 200) but the only thing keeping it there is the game tends to lag pretty heavily at high pop numbers. More forts, yes! In part 3 of this series I start conquering goblin settlements, plus, I'm a barony so I have another fort that has settled in my lands nearby. You can only play one fort at a time though, you can swap between by retiring and claiming the others. Just remember, the game continues to play and the AI will play your old forts while you're away.

Allright sjoller thanks for the info. I always disable the moods on RimWorld because I never had any luck with managing it. Was to tedious. why do you use natural cave walls as walls and not brick walls?
@vonsch9793
@vonsch9793 Жыл бұрын
You can only engrave smoothed natural walls, not constructed ones. This boosts their value and gives passing dwarves happy thoughts. Alternatively though, you could build expensive gold or platinum block walls (assuming you can find/import enough) and that will add value, but those still can't be engraved. Some players will mines out ores or gems in the stone and fill the gaps with constructed walls, still leaving the rest natural to be engraved, others leave the ores and gems because they are more valuable (especially when smoothed and engraved) in place. Trade-offs.

On the andor thing... Story is fine, but I fell asleep on episode 2 it was moving so slowly. I don't care about any of the characters because I know they all end up dead and I know where Andor ends up himself at the end of his story, so like... I don't care about the build up to that. Just makes me not interested in waiting for the show to get to the action. And I've already looked at the action scenes. They're fine. I just... I don't want star wars to be "relatable" or mimicking modern times. I want escapism and to be taken to a galaxy far-far away.

I'll need to wait till the brothers fix the performance. I have a beefy gaming pc and it is unplayably laggy to play for me. Well, "something's up" on a lot of people's end, including Nookrium's, because several of his mouse clicks aren't registering, either. And since they register in pretty much every other game, I'd say it's quite likely that DF is trying to use custom code to intercept mouseup / mousedown states instead of using the OS / DX functions to get mouseclick events (that get registered and stored even if they happen while the game is busy, so there might be a delay but they won't simply get lost).

2:12:00 I totally get where you were trying to go with that comparison, but a book is definitely not as inaccessible as ascii dwarf fortress. you don't even lose the complexity of DF's underlying systems just because it has graphics™ and a UI That obscurity of learning how to read essentially raw data out of basically spreadsheets is just a giant, unpleasant and unnecessary hurdle to an otherwise quite interesting experience. I appreciate the fact that you and many other people kept the journey of making Dwarf Fortress alive, by participating, but please don't depict the inaccessibility as a merit

@akqj9 Likewise blocks are a good choice for random non-economic rocks: 1 rock makes ~4 blocks & they're a lot lighter, hence quicker to haul to a (potential) construction site without a wheelbarrow! On the subject of speed-of-haul, note that different rock types have different densities pretty much equivalent to IRL. Eg cobaltite & microcline rocks (& mobile 'constructions' such as pots/barrels) are much heavier than eg jet or gypsum, therefore any object constructed from those rock types will take longer to haul than the latter (& take up more of a trade caravan's carry weight capacity) despite their pretty blue colour! :)
@RimshotKiller

You can also just create a dedicated rock stockpile and your dwarfes will haul the rocks there.

@vonsch9793

If you want to farm on stone, you have to flood it and drain it then let the puddles (1 deep) evaporate leaving behind mud deposits which act as soil. If you are on a sand/mud/clay layer no need to flood. On the surface you have patches of pebbles/stone that can get in the way of fields sometimes. Can do the same with those. Build a wall next to them, a ramp beside it, then designate a pit one level up over the spot and have a job to dump some water in that pit. Once a dwarf dumps a pail on it, kill the job, deconstruct the ramp and wall and wait for the puddle to evaporate. Takes micromanagement or you can flood a lot more area than one tile which then take longer to dry up. Can't build a farm plot on a tile with standing water.

Most likely explanation is that Nook was too miserly with his initial trade(s) & made no gifts. Initial trades require a hefty %age profit to succeed (now reflected in the orange/yellow/green indicator below); this reduces over time as your fortress gains prestige, wealth & fame & hence can 'overpay' & gift more value
