I can't wait to finally meet Dana Councilfangs. Seriously my dwarves can't get enough of this amazing jaguar and her settling down and laboring in the dunes. Half the statues and engravings are of this legendary animal and her admittingly cool name.

I love how dwarves obsess over depicting the least interesting events. Instead of depicting wars, heroic struggles, etc. it’s all dudes becoming bookkeepers and random goblins killing a lye maker that died 200 years ago.

I'm excited for adventure mode! I don't think I can be over-hyped for it because I love it exactly for what it was in the old version. I enjoy the "make your own fun" nature of it, the granular control of combat, and the need to actually write things down. However, I AM worried about the people who are new to DF and this will be their first exposure to adventure mode. If they're expecting a real RPG with real curated quests, well-written characters with arcs, they're going to be surprised. Just like fortress mode, the stories in adventure mode come from you, the player, and what you decided to pay attention to.

It try and liken it to kenshi. But even kenshi has more going on dialogue wise. Here's hoping that kitfox does not over market it. Bay12 knows what it is. I hope kitfox knows how to sell it to people. Hopefully their preview coverage will help people enjoy it and not over hype themselves.

Yeah I've always read tons of lore about my world before I play and take notes of key places I need to visit or historical figures I want to meet/kill. It feels needed to combine it with Legends, then you can find crazy shit going on in the world and go try putting an end to it. For example, in my current world I've got a roc who's been killing hundreds of people, this roc is also the last roc in the world, and now I'm building an undead army to go attack the rocs lair. That's changing history, making rocs extinct and putting an end to a beast that's killed over 200 people.

Party feature as it exists is pretty weak. It would be better if you could make a new companion a party member. Like something you could turn off or on as the situation needed. I’m glad it’s an option, I just wish it were a more useful option.

I know next to nothing about Adventure Mode and that excites me a lot. I hope it's possible to join a fort and just live daily life inside the fort, crafting items, drinking in the tavern etc. Something about that appeals to me.

It's a endless open sim of the mechanics that df has. Zero direction, little rewards or payoff and no goals to speak of. Great for solo rp and world building. Rough for people who expect modern game design.

I remember hearing the mode was originally conceptualized as a TTRPG story generator. Eventually becoming a game. So, there are strong "tool" elements to the game.

As someone who played more adventure mode than fortress back then, I hope they overhaul the quest system, especially when it comes to locating someone or something, I remember every time I asked people for someone's whereabouts, they just say they're in town, without giving anything else.

I worry that the fog of war wont show you discovered tiles. i’m assuming that it’s like a toggle-able feature or some kind of skill, because its too useful to remove.

Stealth limits your view a lot. It also depends on the type of creature you are playing. Dwarves see better in the dark then humans.

Having seen videos of previous Adventure Mode play (Kruggsmash mostly lol), I get the sense that it was rather intimidating to play simply because of all the variables inherit to DF. That said, I am excited to actually give it a try for myself in the Steam release and can't wait for April (or whenever they decide to update it in. No need to rush it!) Also excited for any Adventure Mode videos you have planned too!

If you are a good story crafter then Adventure mode is quite the powerful tool. But it definitely was a bland tool if you wanted to play it like your standard RPG. it really can feel empty and the combat shallow, only because to see the details you have to stop playing and start reading. If you move your character into an enemy it would auto attack, choosing the most likely to hit and most damaging attack, which is how the AI does it in fortress mode. That is why a swordsdwarf might opt to punch or bite instead of slash. Adventure mode's "wrestling" menu opens the blinds so you can see all the options and variations while saying how likely to hit and how solid of a hit said combo would be. So, while you might think "swing sword at goblin's neck" would be the best, a goblin fresh of stamina would probably just dodge it unless your swordwarf is an absolute legend. Most likely you'd find your highest chance of hitting being a glancing cut on their left hand or something. So, within that system, you could imagine a tense duel between the two, trying to wear the other down when finally a blow is landed that causes enough pain the opponent recoils, lowering their guard.

I think one thing I'm concerned about is the revamped wrestling. I got REALLY good with the old version of wrestling, and being both familiar and interested in the structure it used before, I loved how granular (if clunky) it was and how it allowed me to do all sorts of zany things. I'm worried that they could tear down what made it great, and gut the advanced combat tactics a lot of players utilize in the process.

I hope the fundamentals of Kisat Dur still work at least. I have a lot of fun taking out large groups of bandits and megabeasts with my bare hands.

For Eru sake, that thing is written with SDL. I'm actually surprised of how much progress they managed to so far. DF development has really bright future ahead. Even after they finish the "conversion" there's so many things they still can create. Nice video, thanks!

I hope after adventure mode is out we can get more modding tools. Content releases are definitely slower now that they’ll have to work on new UIs and graphics whenever they add big stuff like myths and magic. If modders had a few more tools up their sleeves, like adding procedural elements to things or expanding the possibilities with what can trigger interactions (likely modding in burning, freezing, poisonous metals). Having tags for ingestible items would also be nice, like a ‘drink this before fighting’ or ‘drink this when wounded’ tag.

can't wait for adventure mode, i feel like ill be much more able to get into dwarf fortress from a narrative standpoint. fortress mode is very fun as well and as you say the more you understand the simpler it kinda becomes, but my uncreative ass tends to get overwhelmed by just the amount of the systems and options i have so i end up building very basic forts and getting my teeth kicked in immediately. very fun yes i love the random shit that ends up blowing me up, but i feel like at times i'm missing out on the full experience of the world because i still have a very hard time wrapping my head around any of the more advanced stuff and it feels like a wall i cant overcome at times. I feel like adventure mode will really scratch that itch as i just want to last long enough to experience, overcome, and eventually succumb to some of the more crazy shit in the world

I like the idea of adventures telling unique stories. However, I'm still more interested in adventure mode being in the game first, so at the very least, let's hope it comes out swinging, which should encourage more content for the mode. What has been shown looks cool, but I really can't wait for the mode itself.

I've personally done this for Skyrim as other people have as a little side project, I'll mess around with v47 and see what's viable. Some flavour text would be nice based on the surroundings.

@@BlindiRL Ye when people talk about some very modular integration (like text) they generally mean mods. In the Q&As some people just wanted to know the dev opinions at the time on the off-chance they had any experience or interest with it, that's my assumption. However, it would work better in modded content regardless because people would want different branches of it for individual preferences. Otherwise, acting stingy towards people wanting any integration is, while understandable, not very founded. They just want fünny text in gaem :smile:

For as long as I've played DF, I have never started to explore adventure mode. This is going to be good and I'm tempted to take most of April off just to enjoy it (figuratively... the work never ends of course).

if you can reach them, digging is impossible (at least in the beta) but theres a few ways to access caves and you can climb mountains, walls, and buildings and such.

I wonder if recent advancements in chat AI will make its way into an rpg someday. Seems like the only way to make something close to "rich and engaging" conversations with NPCs possible in a game like DF. On the other hand, it is definitely not in the scope of the game!

The limitations of the interaction are the consequences and implications of the dialogue, not the dialogue itself. Being able to ask random NPCs about their parents and if you might want to begin a quest to visit their hometown, are impossible if there is no hometown, no family, no quest generation implemented. The interactivity of the world is explicitly defined by the programming. Sorry for being redundant I'm just reinforcing to myself that game devs work magic

Is it possible to rescue one of your failed forts in adventure mode. I had a fort that was took over by a were animal plauge. It was once a bustling fort with a bar that was a dark den of the flesh, and then convert the save back to fortress mode

Stuff also gets thrown around when you adventure back in. Last time I did that half the artifacts I made in that fort were on the surface or in the river and not the fort itself. This has generally been my experience.

Honestly don't care for adventure mode at all. Hate to break it but it's pre-alpha walking simulator with no gameplay whatsoever. Qud actually has quests and rewards and economy and it's still pretty hard to play that sometimes due to unfinished UI. It will take Tarn a decade to reach that level. I do want to see those ugly red rectangles replaced tho + any other cross-pollination goodies that may come of this.
