We couldn’t figure out how our new baby dwarf hamster was escaping from a closed wire cage until we discovered she could fit out of the small hole at the door. She’s now in a glass tank home.

As kids my brother and I had a pet Syrian hamster that we had _also_ kept in a glass tank home. The tank had a hinged metal lid that the hamster on a couple of occasions was able to force open for his escape. It didn't matter that the lid edge was on top of him as he squeezed through the narrow opening. So one morning -- as an experiment -- we placed three volumes from our encyclopedia set on top of the lid. When we returned from school, we saw that the hamster had disappeared and the three volumes were still in place. We spent a good deal of time searching... when the hamster dropped to the floor seemingly from the ceiling. What happened was that the hamster, having somehow successfully lifting up the weighted lid, had climbed all the way up the window drapes located very close to the tank. Bottom Line: Hamsters (at least the Syrian ones) are surprisingly strong. Your dwarf hamster --- even fully grown --- may _not_ be able to do what our Golden did... but you may wish to ready yourself anyway.

@Tobias Rasputin exactly! I actually have made a video about that. A good example of mine is about a Syrian hamster that I rescued this year of March. I placed her in a 40 gallon breeder tank before and after a couple of days she showed signs of “lack of enclosure” . I knew from the start that her enclosure wasn’t enough which is why I ordered the niteangel bigger world. But upon waiting for her new enclosure to arrive, that was the time she showed signs. When her new enclosure arrived that was when she stopped showing signs and continued on being a happy hamster. So, this experience made me understand more on why bare minimum enclosures for hamsters can affect their behaviors. Obviously, not all hamsters have the same behaviors, but most of them will have the same reaction if you lack at giving them on what they need. Since I’ve experienced a lot, as a hamster owner, it made me recommend people to go over the bare minimum or at least have a back up solution like a extra money whenever something like my experience happens to them. That is up to them if they want to listen, but unfortunately there are hamster owners out there who are hardheaded and lacks experience. I feel bad for those hamsters who tried giving signs of stress and their owners not giving a damn and ignoring those red flags.

If a hamster can fit his head or her head through something they will fit their full body through it as well. That's why when you have hamsters or small rodents you need to make sure their cage is completely secure so they cannot squeeze through anything.
@ca66agepatchk1d3 жыл бұрын
Yup 😩 I've got two rats and they're chaotic little escape artists and will find a way out of anything. They're happy and live in a nice large cage full of hammocks, hides, and toys, but they always try to escape. I had to cover their entire cage with hardware cloth and replace their bedding tray with a metal one because they chewed a massive hole through the plastic.

@ikitti88652 жыл бұрын
That’s big problem- that means your hamster is stressed and it needs a bigger home.. I hear that you have upgraded it from a glass tank which is awesome! But, you should try making a bin cage or possibly get another bigger cage. Also more bedding would help the hamster so he/she would get to burrow. I would not recommend any tube since the hamster could get hurt from them, and maybe not any plastic since it would get really hot in them and the hamster could over heat. Last thing is a big (or bigger) wheel, you have a dwarf so he/she should probably have a 5” inch or bigger wheel since they run a TON. And I would also recommend getting a water dish instead of a bottle so the hamsters neck doesn’t have problems, and I would make it more natural! Adding logs, sprays, sprinkle the food around, wooden stuff, a hut that has chambers, a good food mix, NO hamster ball, give treats, and lastly, give it love and free time to rome around in the bathtub or a pet free room, or a playpen thing. (I would recommend watching Victoria Raechel on her hamster care. ☺️)

Please do not recommend a 5 inch wheel the minimum for a dwarf hamster is 20 cm which is 8 inches

That is a very cute hamster! But the cute hamster needs a glass / plastic cage over the minimum of 450 square inches of floor space! I see the bites on the top of the door, signs of stress of boredom! If you could, hot glue card board to prevent her teeth from spacing apart from the bar biting!

This is why you house them in big fish or reptile tanks, if you want it the tank to have "2 stories" as in a lower and upper level you just get a big hamster condo that you can take in and out; that is short enough that it won't stop the tank lid from fully closing. They make open hamster wheels that stand on their own, and won't injure hamsters/mice/gerbils etcetera etcetera; and if you don't like using water bowls for hamsters they also make water bottles that suction cup to the glass, you just put it inside and slap it on the tanks wall. Hope this helps any newbie hammie owners, OR people wanting to get a hammie and researching hammies before they get one; have an awesome day!🥰🖤
