Aww. I adopted, didn't buy, a girl from a petstore. Why? She had been returned 2 times; the second time, she was fear screaming nonstop for *3 hours* since the people bought her. The poor thing was just terrified and I think was a bit on the younger side. She would still make concerned noises even when she freely got on my hand weeks later and just stayed a vocal little girl. She wouldn't scream much but once she adjusted she was a happy chirper/squeaker

Will never forget one time I had to clean my first hamster’s “bedroom” (he slept in a jar underneath a platform). I gently tilted the jar over to get him out, and once he was out, he stood on his back legs, raised his arms, and showed me his teeth 😂 he looked like a tiny bear. I wish people spoke more about social hamsters. Sometimes their behavior can come across as stress but it’s not. I have a very sociable boy and as he’s gotten older he absolutely LOVES cuddles and spending a lot of time with me. Whenever he hears me he runs right over to the glass waiting for my hand. To others this may seem like stress but it’s absolutely not. If he doesn’t see me he’s happy foraging but the moment he hears or sees me he wants to cuddle and kiss me 😅 he enjoys daily massages 2 🥺

My Lena (russian dwarf) was found laying flat on her cage. I picked her up and noticed she was barely breathing. Sometime later she started licking my fingers while her eyes were barely open. About 35 minutes later, she passed in my hands. This happened 8 months ago, I realise I probably could've done something to help her which would've allowed her to survive. I have never felt such an emotional connection with anyone or anything. I still miss her. Edit: I think Lena may have been a puppy in her last life. She was very sociable, always wanting my attention. Even when I had her out to play I'd text with someone. She would then climb up my arm and onto my phone, as if to say "I'm here to play, not them".

By the time we made it home, my old boi Ridley got my scent- and within three days, was comfortable with me. Hell, the first time I placed his wheel, he played so much it toppled(my bad). He was obviously distressed, and sat back to watch as I fixed it for him. Only a few days later he was climbing a little wall divider I'd put in his bin, dangling by his lil hands with his butt in the air. Once I'd given him a boost, he clamored right up and looked me straight in the eye. Ever since, he was a pure sweetheart, and would actively seek my attention whenever he needed something or wanted attention. Because of those interactions, he became a clumsy lil climber- which worried me at first, but it became very clear that he was doing it for fun. He was extremely smart, and context sensitive. Your little babies might have more personality than you know. Remember that, and keep them happy & engaged.

Great video! You left out my favorite one though that I've been calling the "prairie dog look", which basically is when they sit upright on their hind legs, ears perked and look like a prairie dog that has popped up out of its hole. This is because they're listening carefully to something they find unusual or interesting, I had this confirmed for me when I had a hamster and it would do it every time the computer CDROM was being accessed and spinning up to speed. It made an extremely high pitch whine that was just on the edge of human hearing, and whenever it did it the hamster would immediately stop whatever it was doing, sit up looking alert and like it should have a big cartoon question mark hanging in the air above its head, it was the cutest damn thing! It was like if it could talk it would have said "And there it goes again! What is that??"

Thanks for including the thing about licking at the end, my hamster licks me a lot, especially when he all of a sudden notices my hand in his cage, when I've just taken him out, or a random lick here or there. It didn't seem like a problem, I just didn't know why he did it. I assumed it was because my hands were salty, but he licks me whether my hands are just washed or not. Now I think he might be licking me to say he likes me! (even though that is probably not the case because he acts like he has no use for me except as a seed dispenser...) lol

I would just like to quickly mention that another reason for bar biting or escaping is if you have two hamsters of the same species the male will sometimes try to escape when he smells that the female is in heat. The female may also try to escape to mate as well but usually it's mainly the male, again not every hamster does this and regular bar biting is not normal.
@VictoriaRaechel3 жыл бұрын
It definitely can happen but if that is the case it's really important to have them in separate rooms to prevent them from constantly focusing on trying to get to each other.

The highlight of my Saturdays - tuning in! Such a comprehensive video with examples in video clips (so helpful!!) of hamsters exhibiting those behaviors plus advice on how to “handle” or react to those behaviors - fantastic! The key to becoming an excellent pet owner of any creature is to learn what their behaviors mean since they verbally cannot tell us what they need (unless you count barking or meowing - 😁). I hope in reading comments here you know what a hugely positive impact you are having on the hamster community. yeah bar biting is stress and boredom related, true. My girl does that to really get my attention that she wants out into her running ball, after I take her out two times (with a pause for drink and rest in her cage) she is happy. Also about the scent marks - They really do have little patches on their hips. My hamster had them very visible and I was worried he was ill but then I learned that those are scent packs, it looks just like a scrab on an injury. And licking is the most adorable thing. I used to have a hammy that licked my nose when I lifted her up to my face and once she found my injury and licked it and I called for my family to go see how she is trying to treat me.

I'm so glad we didn't listen to the crap suggestions pet employee gave us regarding home for our hamster. We got him a huge aquarium and along with watching these videos, my hamster shows no signs of stress or boredom. He is happy, responds when called is well loved. Thank you for your videos!!! You're an amazing hamster advocate!!!

I have a 600 square inch cage and I have noticed that my hamster *named cow* is passing and monkey baring so I’m upgrading my cage right now! It’s a 🎉 1018 square inch cage with no bars!! It arrives at my house I’m 7 days and I’m so excited to give cow a big upgrade and a happier life ❤️✨❤️

Thank you so much for all of your videos! They’re so great and informational! I’ve been really trying to figure out how to properly care for a hamster and I came across your account a little while ago. You’ve been the BEST resource I’ve found 🥰 I just got my little hammy yesterday and I was so prepared- thanks to you! ❤️ Honey is already taking food from my hands on day two. Hopefully all continues to go well :)) in the mean time, I’ll continue to watch videos and research to try to make sure I continue to give my hammy the best life possible. Thank you!!

I don't know if it's just me, but bar cages give me bad vibes all together, even if they're big enough. It's probably because they remind me of critter trails and tiny tails. Loved this video! 💖

I am so happy you posted this although it was heart breaking for me. my first hamster was an angel and would bar bite and monkey bar and it makes me so sad that back then people just didn't have the information to know that they were unhappy. I remember thinking she was a gymnast climbing the bars and I may have sat and cried watching this. Since turning into an adult I have had 2 more hamsters and I am so happy with the information out there and they have the best lives, I just feel so guilt for the hamster I had as a kid especially since she was probably the nicest hamster I have owned to date.

Watching this video and the footage of the stresssed out hamsters (and sometimes in bad enclosures) was sooooo incredibly stress inducing and hard for me to see. These poor babies, I just want all of them to have good and happy lives 😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔

My little Silly is newly brought 3 days ago and keeps biting on the bars and now only now do I realize my enclosure for him is too small and not even 8 inches of bedding for him. Don’t get me wrong, he is a healthy boi and burrows often to create safe places to sleep in. So let’s hope it’s fine for now and I’ll upgrade it when very much needed due to illness

8:00 every night before bed I brush my teeth in our bathroom I let Casper (my hamster) stretch his legs and have a little run around after making sure it's safe and the floor is clean he marks his scent all the time! And even does it along our bathtub lol it's so funny when he does it 😂

I have a female Syrian hamster and she was nibbling my clothes a lot, but I didn’t know what was happening! I’m glad I have found your channel because it has really helped!😁 I also have a question. What bedding do you generally use for your hamsters?

My hamster, Bumper, squeaks all the time when he first wakes up and notices me in the room. He also tends to do this when he is curious, like if I give him a new toy. I'm glad it's not a stressful behavior in his case!

Hey Victoria, I know your channel is huge so I doubt you have time to reply to everything, but I'm slightly concerned about my hamsters "squeaking" (I assumed it was sneezing though). If you have time to respond, great, if not, I understand! Basic info about my hams: 3 Syrian females, all separate huge tanks ofc. 1 is a new baby who doesn't do this, and I don't let her free roam yet. The 2 older ones I let them free roam in my room (separately ofc) every night. The oldest one started making the exact sound your hamster is making around 4:45 in the video. You said in the video it could be a form of communication or it could mean something is wrong. For starters, I see no other indications at all that there is anything wrong. Their activity, eating, drinking, etc is perfectly normal. My oldest hamster (1.5~ years old) started making this sound here and there about 6 months ago I'd say, few and far between though, but tonight it's a LOT of MEEPS. The other hamster has NEVER made this sound until tonight, which is why I worry. I let them take turns free roaming, and both of them WHILE free roaming (not seemingly ever while in their tanks) start making that squeaking noise. My assumption is that it's dust or allergies or something. I vacuumed my carpet 2 days ago, but I couldn't be super thorough with every corner cause I have a lot of crap in the way, and didn't wanna run the vacuum long and disturb them (I don't have the means to move them all out of the room atm). Both of them have been squeaking a lot tonight. Should I be worried? Is it possible they're sick and sneezing? Or is it more likely it's just dust/allergies (maybe vacuuming 2 days ago kicked up dust, no idea, I also have a Dyson air purifier which I figured would help clear the air). Seems like they primarily or only sneeze while free roaming so I'm just assuming dust/allergies (I live in TX and the allergies destroy me too). Any insight would be appreciated if possible, I've googled and googled and can't find anything useful really. Is this squeak the same sound as a sneeze would be? Or is it legitimately just a vocal expression? I've found 1-2 "hamster sneeze" videos and they're similar but not quite the same, these are just like 4:45 , sounds like a "MEEP". Thank you!
@VictoriaRaechel2 жыл бұрын
If it sounds like the hamsters in the video I'd probably say they're smelling the other hamster and trying to communicate especially since they're free roaming in the same room. A sneeze sounds much different than the squeaks in the video!

hey victoria, im a first time hamster owner and my hamster follows my hand around the cage , does that mean she wants to bite me or does it mean she wants me to pick her up ? and sometimes she looks like shes shivering what do both of these things mean? ( shes a 2-month-old female syrian hamster and the room temp is always on 21c low wind )

So happy I found your channel. Got my first ever hamster a few weeks ago & your videos have been invaluable. Feel like Chester isn't a massive fan of me yet but I'm so glad after watching this video he's not doing all the stress behaviours except the screaming one but that's my fault & I'm learning to be slower around him. Just wanted to say a huge than you for so many amazing tips & tricks & I'm excited about seeing Chester grow over the next couple of years. Watched your free roaming video the other day & hoping to get a little enclosure for him to run around in. 🥰

Once you're used to it, its easy to identify happy sqeaks from scared squeaks. I usually hear happy sqeaks when I let them free roam. I love hearing those. They sound like rubber duckies.

My little Ruby was climbing the wire mesh of her bin cage, since then, I moved her into a medium Niteangel enclosure. Now she’s wall scaling. She’s got herbs, sprays, 8 inches of bedding, a 3 chamber and a 2 chamber wooden hide, 2 wheels, a sand bath, I sprinkle her food around. What else can I do? When I place her in a play pen, she seems stressed. The only thing that has helped so far, is to a sprinkle more food for her to forage or give her a wooden stick with food glued to it (the sticky paste is oat flour and water). She’s fast and stashes all her food. I would appreciate some tips! Thanks!

I just got a hamster - he was on Craigslist free - for 21 days and nobody taking him so I did. He's a sweetie. In the process of getting him bigger digs thanks for all your advice! I did get him a bigger wheel right away as he hit his back on the post in the teeny one he came with. Now he runs and runs all night he's happier already! I call him Saint James : ) - I also bought him a small can of gourmet meal worms and he loves them if you give him one out of your hand. Otherwise they dry up and he throws them out the side of the cage. He has his quirks but very cute and friendly.
