Fell in love with the HINOKI cypress seeing/buying one 8 inches tall. Nursery never stated it was slow and wanted for middle container middle of yard. Chinese use that size for bonzai. I walk by and laugh now knowing it needs replacement where it is. But it is adorable w fan like end branches.

Thanks Jim. I follow you as a charlotte gardener and I just bought a golden variety of this plant today. Exactly the video I needed from exactly the gardener I can trust.

I planted it today. My problem was rocks lol so many rocks. Hoping I spaced it far enough from the house.

I had planted 5 of these two years ago. Last winter one was decimated by deer and another two were heavily eaten as well. I was able to get them to all grow and fill out, but one is still pretty thin. This winter I have been spraying everything with deer off from Havahart - so far it appears to be working, but my dog sure love the smell...

I love hinoki cypress! Thanks for this video! I have a Gracilis in a very large container in front of my house that I adore. I love the year-round interest and the unique form.

Great plant! I've been growing one as a bonsai for about 5 years now in a shallow pot on a rack in my back yard. Love it!

I think many of the Chamaecyparis varieties have the truest shades of green in the garden. Such beautiful color and texture.

I have been on the edge of putting a golden dwarf hanoki as a foundation plant where I have some windows about 8 feet off the ground. Was thinking yesterday is it was too cold to plant them in Raleigh right now, but I guess you answered that for me! Thanks for the great video

Well, this is timely. I was hoping to plant a Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Crippsii,' a gold-leafed Hinoki, as a specimen here in zone 8a Virginia. In full, all-day sun. If your little Gracilis would burn in all-day sun, than the gold-leafed 'Crippsii' wll fare worse here. So, on to the B-list. I'll plant Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan Sugi' instead.

Interesting tree- never heard of it- bark looks similar to Crape Myrtle but with better color. I may just have to plant one- thanks for recommendation.

@@tazmankb26 Yeah kind of a shorter slow growing tree with some width. Gets white flowers for about a month during early summer late spring. Cool bark and great fall color. Possibly might get 8 of these for my long driveway

It was actually on my list to go where the serviceberry is in the front yard. I'll look at the arboretum tomorrow to see if there is one to film there.

Hey Jim! Question - I just purchased 2 of these beauties. They are about the same size, but one has one single leader branch sticking about a foot above the rest of the plant, in the middle. Would you trim that off, or stake it? Thanks!

I planted a dwarf Hinoki Cypress last year and this week the deer have devoured every last bit of green. It was my favorite. 😢. Will it come back or did I just spend a large amount of $ on deer food?

I never see bigger nana lutea - only nana gracilis. Did you see any nana lutea there by chance? I live with a very heavy deer popular and they never touch any of my chamaecyparis obtusa. I often see deer prints all around them too.
@JimPutnam4 жыл бұрын
I usually only see them in 3 gallon containers here. They bleach in the sun a bit here.

We have really thick sticky clay here in South Texas. Do you recommend using gypsum? I bought a bag of soil conditioner at my local garden center, and they recommended it(gypsum). I just don't know how well that would work or if I would even see a difference any time soon or if that is noticeable in the future.
@debbiesampath11794 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I am in north TX between Dallas and Ft. Worth. I have seen several videos recommending gypsum also. It is cheap so I would try it and just keep adding compost and maybe a little pine bark to aerate the clay. I use HappiGrow Compost for $3.35 at LOWES for many years and it works well to improve the clay soil. Happy Gardening!!
@beagarza764 жыл бұрын
@@debbiesampath1179 Hi Debbie. Well I went ahead and sprinkled some gypsum. And yes, I'm also adding soil conditioner little by little. I'm hoping to notice a difference in a couple of weeks when I start adding annuals to my flower bed. I'll buy some HappiGrow compost to add as well. Thank you for the recommendation. I appreciate it!
