That is one thing I do like about the Dwarves more than the Elves. That even when driven out of their ancient homes... They never forgot or forsook those sacred places. Even if it took thousands of years and the lives of every last Dwarf... One day they would return.

Yean thats true the dwarves had ot tough from the moment durin the deathless woke in the first age the dwarves have been through so many hardships but they are perhaps the strongest pepole to go through it as they come back stronger , the dwarves have survived wars with orcs , wars with dragons , the battle of the five armies and more and they still never give up or give in .

Most of the realms of the Noldor were in Beleriand and ended up under the sea after the end of the first age… just like most of the kingdoms of Belegost and Nogrod, whose inhabitants went mainly to Khazad Dûm. A bit hard to return to them unless Eru granted them gills…

I always had hoped that Tolkien would have elaborated more on the delving that Gimli founded in the Ered Nimrais, such a fascinating and mysterious cave there with an unknown hinted at within. What was it? Tolkien never let us know, but it's mysteries like that, that keep us searching and exploring today. :)

Always love to hear more about the Dwarves and their homes. I like to think that the Dwarves did not die or fade away, but, like the Elves, simply left Middle Earth for the realm of their birth. In this case not Valinor, but the deep places in the Earth where Aule created them.

Maybe im wrong at this, but I read in one of tolkiens letters that the dwarves wouldnt fade, but slowly dissapear from the face of middle earth with their halls empty and devoid however they did not fade, because dwarves are to stubborn for this, maybe they were taken to the halls of Aulë the Smith to dine with their ancestors, until Dagor Dagorath when Morgoth returns from the door of night and the final battle approaches , Durin the I and his decendants will wake up in Mirrormere and reclaim their old halls at the end of time. See Durins song espacially the last strophe: The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadow of his head. The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin's Day. A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. The light of sun and star and moon In shining lamps of crystal hewn Undimmed by cloud or shade of night There shone for ever fair and bright. There hammer on the anvil smote, There chisel clove, and graver wrote; There forged was blade, and bound was hilt; The delver mined, the mason built. There beryl, pearl, and opal pale, And metal wrought like fishes' mail, Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, And shining spears were laid in hoard. Unwearied then were Durin's folk; Beneath the mountains music woke: The harpers harped, the minstrels sang, And at the gates the trumpets rang. The world is grey, the mountains old, The forge's fire is ashen-cold; No harp is wrung, no hammer falls: The darkness dwells in Durin's halls; The shadow lies upon his tomb In Moria, in Khazad-dûm. But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere; There lies his crown in water deep, Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

The importance of Gundabad in the North as a significant stronghold is Key. It helped defend during the Angmar wars and would be fought for in the Fourth Age. In 821 of the Fourth Age, the northern most peak reveals Mithril after a great earthquake. A small group of Dwarves kept this mine hidden and secret as the cold winter makes mining a short summer activity. The new influx of Mithril in the North creates a new opportunity for the Dwarves.

It would have made less sense for the Dwarves, since we know what happened to them - they dwelt deep within the earth where according to the mythos they remain today. We know elves, meanwhile, went to the undying lands, hobbits I’m not sure, and orcs ended up becoming the people who recline their seat on the plane.

Longbeards or Durin's folk are the main house of Dwarves that we see throughout The Hobbit and LoTR. Firebeards and Broadbeams were Dwarves that we encounter in the Silmarillion. After the fall of Western Middle-Earth, some or many Broadbeams and Firebeards intermingled with Durin's folk. Some of the Dwarves in the hobbit are actually descendents of those other 2 clans. The other 4 clans wete never really spoken of, but they are said to have been Dwarves of the eastern mountains. Both men and elves awoke in the east and migrated west, it is my opinion that the Dwarves also awoke in the east, and the 3 clans that we read about in the Silmarillion, Hobbit and LoTR migrated and settled in various places in the west of Middle-Earth while the other 4 clans/houses stayed in the east and established kingdoms there. It's never said if any Dwarves settled in southern Middle-Earth, but it is possible. Like many things Tolkien wrote about, not much is said.

I cannot fathom the amount of detail Tolkien added in his lifetime, I just wish he could have the lifetime of a Numenorian we could have got this whole world some more filling as you could say. I don't know any fantasy series or works that have this kind of worldbuilding as Arda has, it's unbelievable. Tolkien said that this Arda is actually ours and he wanted to write it in a way that it slowly fades away and more and more as time goes, the world looks more like ours and in the end it's the same world we live in. I think he kinda succeeded at that, because for myself this seems so grandeur, something so far out but still realistic. I sometimes when for example watch this channel and his talking about some battle that happened in the first age, it feels like it is history Channel telling us some real world history, it feels like all this could have happened really in our world long time ago. That just speaks to Tolkien's unique ability with the pen. Even though Harry Potter is in our modern era and it has in itself really good world building, you never think it is something that could be in our real life

Imagine seeing Easterlings with their amazing golden armor from the Two tower movie and a messenger approaching king Dain saying that Gondor is under attack with full Sauron's strength and then a panoramic cut to Minas Tirith under siege from the return of the king movie just like BFME 2 cutscenes . What's intersting to contemplate, i think, is that if the old cities in Ered Luin had NOT been destroyed, and their inhabitants not left, the history of Eriador might have been much different . . . for the Dwarves would have had not only the Elves of Lindon for their neighbors, but later, the Hobbits as well, and it's intriguing to speculate at how that would have worked out. I'm sure that if i was a Hobbit in Dwarven company, like Bilbo hosting Thorin's party or at the Prancing Pony, I would have been eager to hear more about Nogrod and Belegost from my fellow guests, and to invite them to think about what might have been.

I think it was the majesty and craftsmanship of their ancestors in those ancient places that made the Dwarves love them so.

Possibly because they were the height of their civilisation and the height of their skills and therefore riches.

The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone.
