Of course, the language of the Dwarves (Khuzdul) will always be largely incomplete. Tolkien remarked in the Appendices that the Dwarves didn't teach anyone else Khuzdul, not even their own proper names. Part of this has to do with Dwarvish character; dwarves are by nature secretive and slow to trust anyone. Gimli's shouts at Helm's Deep in the books ("Baruk Khazad! Khazad ai-menu!") are no secret since they've been used on every dwarvish battlefield, and translate to "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!". Almost everything else is complete guesswork as The Dwarrow Scholar has pointed out.

a lot of elve lovers and tree huggers wont like this, but Narsil, the sword with which Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger was forged by Dwarves in the Ered Luin! So without the Dwarves, Sauron essentially would've never lost the ring in the first place. Without the Dwarves, Sauron couldn't have been defeated at all ... Dwarves FTW!

I think the prouder races/nations in LOTR are the most badass. The fact that the Dwarves just don't give a flying shit about who their enemies are really brings a go Dont od flavor to them, not to mention all that War chanting is enough to bring a chill down any one's spine. Don't forget Rohan, their own war chanting is really badass to say the least, especially in Return Of The King when they were all chanting Death. sheesh that stuff is unforgettable

Well hello there, how is your lordship of jondor doing?
@mato61238 жыл бұрын
I think more Bekar may mean "ready" or "get ready", "rakan, bekar" shall then mean "rows, get ready". It fits in all quotes: when commander shouts "yanad durinul", the rows reply with "rakan bekar", once the falanx is created, and "Du bekar" as a Thorin's battle cry. I know it conflicts with "Ifridi!", which means the same in your translation, but as "Ifridi" is used after "right into them" and when Wargoats start, it may mean "march forth". I think we should ask the authors ;-).
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thoughts on that. But "Bekâr" does mean "arms (weapons)" and "Ifridî" does mean " make ready". These are not guesses or assumption by myself, but this has been attested by the author of this Neo-Khuzdul version (David Salo) as seen here: midgardsmal.com/dwarvish-8/

Thank you for making this video I have some questions though I've seen more translations saying it is "Tanar Durin Nur" instead of "Yanad Durinul" and when they formed the shield wall "Azagh Bekar" instead of "Rakan Bekar" and the "Ai-ruse" sounds too short it sounds more like "Ai-ruse Bekar" by the sound of the dwarves answering the call. And also question regarding Thorin's battle cry at Moria, "Mem no Thror/Thrain, Du Bekar!" Does that sound accurate to you?
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've seen those comments too, but I can't agree with the majority of those translations I'm afraid. I (personally) clearly hear "Yanâd Durinul" and not "Tanar Durin Nur". In addition, "Yanâd Durinul" would make perfect sense as well, as it means "sons of Durin", while "Tanar Durin Nur" doesn't really mean anything, it sounds a bit like "booth Durin new" if we translate "tanar durin nur" literally, but obviously that makes no sense. So, I'm fairly certain that it indeed is "Yanâd Durinul". What "rakân bekâr" is concerned... here as well I don't year the "z" or even "gh" sound, so fairly sure it wouldn't be "azagh". I've listened to it a few times, but I don't hear the additional bekâr after "ai-rusê", though it would not be impossible grammatically saying "upon the filth, to arms!". Lastly the translation of the battle cry at Moria is: "Imnu Thrôr, Du Bekâr" (meaning: "in name of Thrór, to arms!").
@FreedomFighter088 жыл бұрын
Thank you makes sense, the first scene when Smaug smashes the gate of Erebor Thorin with his men shouts "Rakan" right? Do you also have translation for the dwarves preparing their last stand at the gates of Erebror right before Thorin's charge out of the gate, as they are preparing I hear "Raise the shields! Ifridi! Ai-ruse! Ai-ruse! Ai-ruse!" is this it correct?
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
I believe he says "therkâ" in the scene just before Smaug smashes open the gate of Erebor (AUJ). It is a plural adjective form that means "hold firm". Though here, they should have used the imperative, as it doesn't make sense to use that adjective form here. So instead of "therkâ", he should have said "ithrikî" which is the correct imperative form in this situation. Concerning the scene in the BotFA, preparing the last stand at the gates of Erebor, you indeed hear "ifridî" and "ai-rusê", that indeed is correct.

I always assume "Du bekâr" meant "to me" or something along the lines of "come with me" as it was Thorin's war cry in the book and it would have been more lore friendly. I may be wrong and your speculation is possible.
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
In Neo-Khuzdul "to mê", would actually be "dê" [ a contraction of "du" (to) and "ê" (me)]. "Du bekâr" is in fact attested as "to arms" on David Salo's site, here: midgardsmal.com/dwarvish-4/
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
I'm personally convinced that I hear "Yanâd Durinul", meaning "sons of Durin". While "Tanar, Durin nur", would not have any specific meaning in Neo-Khuzdul. As mentioned in a different reply to this same question it seems to be a suggestion by a fan, based on a guess. Yet "Tanar Durin nur" has little to no meaning, in fact it sounds a bit like "Durin's new booth",which would hardly be applicable. As "Tanar" is a "stall" or "booth", "nur" is a colloquial version of the word "nar" (meaning "new"). So, to be honest "Tanar Durin Nur" would make very little sense i'm afraid.

Well, I guess one could arguie that Dain was ordering the goat-riders and the rest of the gang as well as the ballista at the time - so instead of three orders, he gave one. It's not the correct thing to say, perhaps, but dialogue-wise it probably was the most efficient. And also well-known by now, so the people who aren't super-nerds like us (which is most people, really), could understand the intent, even without subtitles.

it would be awesome if you could translate the song text for the song-Far over the misty mountains- in Neo-Kuzdul. So the KZbinr Rebekah M. who sang the song -I see Fire- so wonderfull with her beautifull dwarfen voice can sing it . i allready wrote with her and she sayed it would be awsome but you did the translations so im begging you to translate this wonderfull piece of dwarfen songwriting. For the Yanâd Durinul. Barûk-Khazâd Khazâd Ai-Menû

i think the first is wrong... i think it's "Tanar Durin Nur/Nul" which means "To battle sons of Durin"
@TheDwarrowScholar7 жыл бұрын
I believe I've mentioned this before, but "Tanar Durin Nur" (or Nul) makes really no sense at all in Neo-Khuzdul (something along the lines of "Durin's new booth". So I have no idea where the idea came from that "Tanar Durin Nur" would mean "to battle sons of Durin", but it is not correct when taking attested Khuzdul/Neo-Khuzdul into account. Besides Yanâd Durinul is in fact attested (YND by Salo - see midgardsmal site) and Durinul uses an existing Tolkien Khuzdul construction.

+Super Gaming Channel Actually I believe it would be "Imnu Thrôr, Du Bekâr" (meaning: "in name of Thrór, to arms!")

dude you missed one amrâlimê which means "my love" kili says it to tauriel when he gives her the rune stone
@TheDwarrowScholar8 жыл бұрын
You are correct that I could indeed have included amrâlimê in this video. But seeing I already covered that translation on my site: dwarrowscholar.wordpress.com/2014/12/11/tbotfa-spoiler-love-is-all-you-need/ and wanted to focus on the translations that were previously unknown, I decided against it.

After watching that I got distracted by the shield damage on the dwarfs shield wall looking identical on some of them.

Love the video, and the Dwarvish language. The hobbit movies weren't bad, but I can't understand why the movies simply can't depict a realistic warhammer...

I wanted to see 500 battle hardened Dwarves as veterans of countless battles marching in with battle axes, mattocks and shields. Not CGI bullshit
