Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at the piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and lost loves ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). Hesitantly at first, he even stumbles a bit, but with growing confidence, Dimash takes us on a journey and with that last refrain, he totally owns this new ground. Like in many of his arrangements, Dimash incorporates sacred music traditions of different cultures and ages into something uniquely his own. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. Dimash is not only aware of the power of music to alter one’s state of consciousness, he wields this power masterfully, but always with great respect. His friend since his teenage years, Erlan Bekchurin, is a brilliant arranger and knows exactly what Dimash wants to accomplish. Together they create magic. Dimash insisted on the use of the kobyz, an instrument which was used in Kazakh shamanism to communicate with spirits, and it fits beautifully. The best Kobyz player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck, performs masterfully as always.

Wonderful reaction to wake up.😊 I love this song but laughed at "So many people there". There are many concerts and events with so many more people, especially in China. At the beginning sounds an old Turkic stringed instrument called Kobys. It is probably the oldest bowed stringed instrument in the world and it spread to became the prototype of all European string instruments as violin an chello. That and the use of the fa minor key in the composition gives the vibe of Middle East /oriental/ exotic sound. Think he´s singing to migrants in general: "New ground far as I can see, new ground underneath my feet, Stranger in a stranger land, new chance to see who I am if I have the strength to begin again"

He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies that have such a mystical or oriental atmosphere. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Kobysz for that. The kobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. Igor Krutoy is a famous Russian-Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter. He came out of retirement specifically to work with Dimash when he first heard him. True masterpieces were created. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range (no kidding), like Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You'll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano. If Igor Krutoy is there, the song was also written by him. The two have no contract. Their cooperation is based more on mutual trust. It's more of a father-son relationship. Please react next to Olimpico from his Arnau concert in 2019. In this song he sings in Italian. You can find it on Igor Krutoy‘s Channel. Olimpico is another masterpiece that Igor Krutoy wrote especially for Dimash’s vocal skills. It was written for the 2nd European Games in Minsk, Belarus 2019. And that’s why the lyrics are also very motivating. This song and this performance is my absolute favourite🥰. I think this version is the best, because his performance is so intense and breathtaking. The light show, the background dancers. Everything. With this song in this version I have gasping breath all the time. The way he represents himself on stage, the hand movements. I think he has incredibly beautiful hands🤭(and apparently many cameramen think so too, since many of the camera shots during his performances very often only show his hands. Sometimes it seems as if he is conducting himself. This is really fascinating). And the facial expression, the look. There he looks so demanding and commanding😱 (I hope it‘s the right word-English is not my native language). There he is such a Beast😳! It’s absolutely stunning. Gasping and racing heart and I’m not even talking about him singing. Oh wow I’m starting to rave again…🤤 Sorry but I can’t help it🥺. Igor Krutoy first heard Dimash sing in 2017, and came out of retirement to compose with and for Dimash. At 5 he was accepted into the most distinguished music academy in his country. Now writing his Doctoral thesis for a PhD in Musicology/ Composing, received all his degrees with honors while simultaneously filling arenas and maintaining his performing career, a first! He has a bachelors degree in vocals, a master's degree in composition and is about to complete his PhD in musicology this year.

The phenomenon that is Dimash is always surprising the listener! He has an epic vocal range but it is better to just listen to him, feel the pure emotion he is expressing and not worry too much about how he does the things he does, just enjoy it. That last note is something like 20 seconds long, the melismatic singing he demonstrates in the middle of this song is beautiful...not what we are used to hearing in the West but through Dimash we are all experiencing the beauty of different cultures and styles of singing, essentially every song he does shows us something new. Dwayne, buckle up and join the World of the Dears and I am looking forward to watching more videos of you reacting to Dimash.
