Although mainly known by his piano concertos I always thought his symphonies (mainly the 2nd but not forgetting the other two) were musically much more complex and rewarding to listen to. I always get goose bumps with this 2nd and must have heard it untold times. Only thing...it has to be played with lots of passion and by a very good and large orchestra to show its real colors.

One of the greatest symphonies ever composed! I've been fortunate enough to have played it many times as a first horn - most recently earlier this year - and have conducted this masterpiece as well and I've lost count of the number of times I've heard it. I still remember when, as a teenager, my late father brought home André Previn's now famous recording of the full version with the LSO on vinyl and it blew my head off. The sheer emotion of the first and third movements and the joy of the Scherzo - second movement - and Finale made such an impact then, as it still does now - almost 50 years later. Good to see Tony Pappano and the Dresden orchestra give such a powerful performance. Thanks for posting this.

The third movement is certainly beautiful in its gut-wrenching kind of way, but nothing beats the fourth movement with all its orchestral complexity and emotional power, with the string section's relentless pursuit of sublimation and the wind section's haunting punctuation between resolution and struggle. When I turn on our classical radio here, I will often hear music that meanders but I end up turning it off because it becomes random and pointless. But with a master like Rachmaninoff there is always a direction, a thread to hang onto. His music explores but you feel propelled by it with a lot of thrill rides along the way. There's always anticipation for the next minute. I don't know how that is done. It's very rare. As for this orchestra, OMG!! The whole group is very precise and warm sounding but the basses and horns are especially kickass.

I judge performances of this symphony by one very specific thing: how they approach that big resolving chord in the last movement, just before the strings sing that gorgeous chorale theme again to bring the whole thing to a close. Too many conductors just barrel right past that chord, but Maestro Pappano gets it right! To my ears, he joins Previn and Ashkenazy in this. What a wonderful performance!
@spfqr49772 жыл бұрын
Could you provide a timestamp for the chord you are talking about?
@KellySedinger2 жыл бұрын
@@spfqr4977 It lands right about the 56:17 mark, the big tonic chord that rounds out the preceding build before the soaring melody recapitulates. It's a tricky spot: you can't ritard the tempo too much and you certainly can't impose a fermata where none is indicated in the score, but the arrival on that chord is such a moment of release that it really bothers me when most conductors just blast right past it.
@julioelizaldepiano2 жыл бұрын
