There was quite a lot of "throw-away" music in Sergei's day as well. Don't sell *all* modern music short. While it's difficult to tell which music will stand the test of time, I can see bands like Dream Theater or Kansas having a following into the future.

Although mainly known by his piano concertos I always thought his symphonies (mainly the 2nd but not forgetting the other two) were musically much more complex and rewarding to listen to. I always get goose bumps with this 2nd and must have heard it untold times. Only thing...it has to be played with lots of passion and by a very good and large orchestra to show its real colors.

Pappano seems to be one of the few conductors that understands that this symphony needs good momentum so as not to become over sentimental. Paul Kletski has always been my benchmark and Pappano comes very close. Wonderful!

One of the greatest symphonies ever composed! I've been fortunate enough to have played it many times as a first horn - most recently earlier this year - and have conducted this masterpiece as well and I've lost count of the number of times I've heard it. I still remember when, as a teenager, my late father brought home André Previn's now famous recording of the full version with the LSO on vinyl and it blew my head off. The sheer emotion of the first and third movements and the joy of the Scherzo - second movement - and Finale made such an impact then, as it still does now - almost 50 years later. Good to see Tony Pappano and the Dresden orchestra give such a powerful performance. Thanks for posting this.

Without a doubt, a masterpiece of the symphonic repertoire of late romanticism! The glorious magnificence of this music is highlighted in this masterful performance... overflowing with mystery, drama, passion, lyricism, melancholy and poetic bombast! This extraordinary symphony inspires and moves with its beautiful themes... it makes us vibrate and tremble with emotion! It is a brilliant musical work: exquisitely orchestrated; and finely constructed in a masterly way, between soft and powerful pulses, with calm and vigorous rhythms! I take my hat off and bow to this wonderful orchestra, under the baton of this fabulous conductor... great job! Definitely: an artistic experience out of the ordinary... simply sublime! Braaavooo, Master Rachmaninoff!

The third movement is certainly beautiful in its gut-wrenching kind of way, but nothing beats the fourth movement with all its orchestral complexity and emotional power, with the string section's relentless pursuit of sublimation and the wind section's haunting punctuation between resolution and struggle. As a life-long admirer of Rachmaninov, this performance is one of the best I've heard, but in terms of KZbin uploads, this is the best version I've seen.

This piece of music was my first love and still my favourite; so I am always super critical of any performance. I can't fault Pappano, he always appears to feel the music with all of his senses, savouring it like a gourmet meal or making love with it in the manner of a bacchanalian revel. This performance is as close to perfect as I have ever heard, thank you to all the players and technicians who put the time and attention into getting this right

I love orchestral music. The energy and elegance of Tchaikovsky's and the avant-garde orchestrations and counterpoint of Stravinsky's. But this Rachmaninov's symphony its, for me, the quintessential romantic-era orchestral work. Superb orchestrations and touching melodic passages, and of course the outstanding Staatskapelle Dresden's performance and the conductor's emotive baton. Thanks for share this amazing concert. It is one of THEE great melodies in all of classical music. This version is a bit brisk for my taste. When I turn on our classical radio here, I will often hear music that meanders but I end up turning it off because it becomes random and pointless. But with a master like Rachmaninoff there is always a direction, a thread to hang onto. His music explores but you feel propelled by it with a lot of thrill rides along the way. There's always anticipation for the next minute. I don't know how that is done. It's very rare. As for this orchestra, OMG!! The whole group is very precise and warm sounding but the basses and horns are especially kickass.

I judge performances of this symphony by one very specific thing: how they approach that big resolving chord in the last movement, just before the strings sing that gorgeous chorale theme again to bring the whole thing to a close. Too many conductors just barrel right past that chord, but Maestro Pappano gets it right! To my ears, he joins Previn and Ashkenazy in this. What a wonderful performance!

Could you provide a timestamp for the chord you are talking about?
@KellySedinger
@KellySedinger 2 жыл бұрын
@@spfqr4977 It lands right about the 56:17 mark, the big tonic chord that rounds out the preceding build before the soaring melody recapitulates. It's a tricky spot: you can't ritard the tempo too much and you certainly can't impose a fermata where none is indicated in the score, but the arrival on that chord is such a moment of release that it really bothers me when most conductors just blast right past it.

What's the best in the adagio is the melody. You can whistle it at any time while walking on the street. You'll then have the whole symphony and a great day.

Awesome. Thank you for sharing this. Is it just me or does it seem like Rach could get an enormous amount of sound out of an orchestra? You'd think the brass was 10x larger, but it's standard, etc. Genius orchestrator.

Het is het verhaal van het leven met zijn onderdompeling in onverwachte en grillige gebeurtenissen en vreemde verwrongen emoties waar je ongevraagd en verdwaasd aan uitgeleverd wordt. Geweldige dirigent en orkest. Sublieme uitvoering.

Rachmaninov seems to be comfortable and excellent composer as other piano concert or symphony and as Vocalise... He must be great and eternal as good as Mozart. It's gorgeous performance. Recording is well. Thank you for uploading..

Beethoven and Mahler are masters of the symphony, but this one of Rachmaninoff's is counted among the best. Who can say, best? Thanks to all the wonderful classical composers, and Rachmaninoff moves me most with all his innovative writing. Even his solo piano works are intriguing. And his Vespers and The Bells are phenomenal, plus Symphonic Dances written 2 years before he died.

Time to drop the concept of what is best, each composer has a special contribution. Mahler is great, so is Debussy, Brahms, Mozart, etc. I don't particularly care for Mozart but understand his contribution and place in musical history. Rachmaninoff is considered the last of the great Romantic composers.
