What a rare quality: to step back and let the composer speak! Wand's Bruckner is so absolutely "Brucknerian" precisely because Wand has the strength and measure and infinite humbleness not to interfere! - There's no doubt: Günter Wand's Bruckner IS a revelation!

I love this comment and agree completely. One of my peeves is conductors who feel compelled to impose their stamp on a piece of music and thereby put themselves in direct competition with the composer's clear intent. This is my favorite Bruckner 4th recording of all and always will be. It is wonderful to hear it in a beautiful sanctuary.
@davelaurence22543 жыл бұрын
That's a perceptive comment. After decades of listening to this work, I know you're right.
@Contemplatix3 жыл бұрын
@@davelaurence2254 I grew up in the late seventies with the complete Bruckner symphonies played by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink. For many years then, this stayed my reference point, so to speak. Eventually I came across Günter Wand's recordings and realised this was something completely else, still! Nothing to do with taste; everything to do with authenticity! Believe it or not, I spent my entire childhood and youth just a few kilometers from Bruckner's birthplace, Ansfelden near Linz, Upper Austria. I always felt that not only echoed Bruckner's music (especially the Scherzi) the landscape of Upper Austria, but even that, vice versa, the landscape breathed his music, too! When I bought my first own HiFi set at the age of 18 (which included JBL L-19 loudspeakers!!!), the first record I played on it was a Bruckner symphony (forgot which one, I believe it was indeed the 4th), along with a bottle of delicate Lacrima Christi which I shared with my parents. It was an extremely moving moment... - I always tell people we should introduce our young to the world of Bruckner, as by listening to Bruckner, the soul becomes humble and pious. The world needs - now more than ever - this powerful spark straight from Heaven. Without it, we'll be lost...

And your observation of Günter Wand is exactly what I feel when I am listening too.

Wand exceeds all others with his Bruckner. I learned this symphony from an old Ormandy recording, and suffered through listening to other various massacres and near misses which couldn't do it justice, until I heard Günter Wand's version. I went and bought his other Bruckner recordings, then the Beethoven and Brahms Symphony sets. This man is the last of the great old-school Germanic conductors. He understands these works and guides them in the direction they must go to remain true to themselves. There is no vainglory in his interpretations, nothing but a desire for perfection. Whenever I want to hear one of these works, my Wand recordings are the go-to versions. Not Toscanini, not Ormandy, not Karajan, not even Fürtwängler... Günter Wand. It's a blessing he recorded these in the modern era with the best technology.

Funny how people always assume they will meet so and so in heaven. I will not even go into the question whether such a place even exists, or how much of a person remains in spirit form, but even in simplest terms the place has been filling up since the existance of mankind. It's next to impossible to meet specific famous people that live in a different city while you are alive. How would that work in the afterlife? Why should it be different in heaven? It's not a "wish-as-you-like"-place. It's a fantasy that will no more come true than time travel and you being able to meet Beethoven. ;)

@conbrio8254 жыл бұрын
@@Schwanzlurch75 Welche Stellen meinen Sie denn da konkret? Würde mich mal interessieren...
@conbrio8254 жыл бұрын
@Schwanzlurch754 жыл бұрын
@Schwanzlurch754 жыл бұрын

Funnily enough (only to me as I always knew the orchestra as the NDR Hamburg), Günter Wand was born in Elb(erfeld), as was Hans Knappertsbusch. The former had the longest rehearsal times, with the possible exception of Celibidache, and the latter the notoriously shortest. All 3 arch Brucknerians. Remember when conductors (or people??) didn't have to fake personalities?

@@NDRKlassik Thanks! I already left a very satisfied comment two weeks ago. This is one of my favourite performance of the work! Wand was a so humble and great conductor, not a diva or a guru, only focused on music for itself. We miss him deeply.

Interesting acoustic. Not good I think. Far too rushed for me. I don't know what Bruckner would have thought as a devout Christian of a symphony concert taking place in a church.
@Quotenwagnerianer4 жыл бұрын
Considering that half of his work is some form of artistic expression of his beliefs, I'd say he would have said: "Why didn't I think of that?"
@davebarclay44292 жыл бұрын
"Rushed"??? What on earth is rushed in this glorious, magisterial performance? Many conductors spoil Bruckner's music by playing it too slowly but Wand didn't acquire the reputation of being a truly great Bruckner conductor by getting his tempi wrong. As to the acoustic, Bruckner was a devout Roman Catholic and a renowned organist. I can't think of a single reason why he would have had a problem with his symphonies being played in a cathedral setting. All his music was for the glorification of God

"His last recording" ) à partir de 1993... la 9(Karajan x2 puis Giulini), la 6(Sawallisch), la 5 (Jochum), la 8(Giulini), la 2 (Zender puis Karajan)...en 1997 je trouve la 4 par Böhm pour 30francs chez Cash... 41:08 ! 😁
