A Kenyan village where men are banned | DW Documentary

Kenya is a traditionally patriarchal land. With one exception: Right in the heart of the country lies the village of Umoja. Here, women are in charge.
Men have no access to Umoja. The village, which is located in Samburu County, is an oasis for women. Umoja means "connectedness" in Swahili; most of the 50 or so women living here are experiencing this feeling for the first time in their lives. They founded their village because they were abused by men. They fled from forced marriage or genital mutilation. They no longer wanted to accept that being a woman among the Samburu means having no choice.
Because here, the man rules over the family. He owns the land, he eats first, he is allowed to marry several women and beat them. Rebecca Lolosoli was fed up with all this. She founded Umoja in 1990 with Jane Leng'ope. At the time, the two did not know whether they would survive on their own. Today, the village is a functioning cooperative. The women's pride and joy is the Umoja school. Their greatest hope is the next generation: the children learn about their rights and that respect and solidarity are the most valuable social assets. Every year, Umoja also enables a handful of girls from outside the village to attend school. It's a barter deal: the child receives free lessons and food. In return, the father undertakes not to marry his daughter off early or to circumcise her. Both are officially forbidden in Kenya but are still practiced among the Samburu. Six-year-old Samella is to get the last spot in the school. But will her father agree to the conditions?

My cousin, sister died in 2022. Because, she went back to an abusive marriage which eventually led to her untimely death. She passed, away leaving three little kids who are now without a mother's love and healing. She was in her mid 30's when she died. I miss her so much. Yes i would buy online if available. Why can’t village women. Set up an online business. A few solar panels donated and an iPad would be a start. Wonder where the nearest post office is. Maybe do a one a week mail. Such a business would generate more than enough income to educate all the children in that area. Education is the key to changing culture and attitudes that enable abuse.

and that's true. I've work several weeks in this area, the men were sitting under a tree drinking banana liquor while the women did all the work with a kid on their back. A male student in economy told me if the men in his country would all work as much as the women, his country would be the richest in Africa instead of being amongst the poorest. So yeah, the women loose nothing by moving out. The men are the ones who have everything to loose.

So, it's like a huge domestic violence shelter turned into a village. That's nice. The women are able to continue their lives without fear and with the support of a community. It'd be nice if they did something similar in Western countries, where instead of just a small shelter they turned say an entire apartment complex into a DV community. A place where women could get free or discounted apartments until they're able to get on their feet and find a safe place to live, where they could have security and community. Great idea!

An apartment complex set up strictly for DV victims would be open to women and children in danger only, no men would be allowed on the property and there could be security to make sure those rules were enforced. It wouldn't even be open to low income women, only victims of DV.

It was an amazing relief that not only did the father agree, but he showed real concern about the health of the girls being circumcised and wanted his daughter to get an education because he never even had the chance. I'm very hopeful for that little girl and I'm proud her father didn't cave to the pressure of the other men in the village (hoping it stays that way and he keeps to the contract). Perhaps she will be the cornerstone in changing the future for all the girls in her village and one day the women and men there can co-exist peacefully. Change can only truly start once the men of their people start really looking at themselves, their behavior, and what it does to women in their lives. Be the change, papa.

This is so refreshing, even in the west alot of women are also abused, mentally and physically and feel they have no other options. Patriarchal ways DO NOT work. I do wonder how life would be if it was matriarchal or even 100% 50/50. The times are challenging slowly but surely.

I visited Umoja in 2017, and although those women are very powerful and admirable, they have extremely, extremely troubling stories. But yes, misogyny seems like such a big issue in Kenya. I remember the driver who took us on our safari trip telling us very casually how he loves his son more than his daughter!!

The women of Umoja finding ways to break the cycle through community and education is tear inducing. They're awe inspiring. And Samela's father having already come to terms with the fact that his daughter will be the first to break the culture of FGM in his village and understanding the criticism he'll endure for it, he's very admirable for this. We know nothing else about him except that despite his poverty he does want his daughter to live a healthy life with opportunities.

THIS!!!!! ALL OF IT!!!!! Women understand community, sisterhood, teamwork. This village shows what happens when women can thrive!!! The fact that women have to run to stay alive and have peace the world over is scary AF!!!!!! This reminds me of a article about a village that had trucks that delivered food and other goods. First all the men in the village would get the goods and by a 2 or 3 weeks in would be out of everything until the truck came back. Next truck visit the delivery drivers said women only this time and the WOMEN made the goods LAST UNTIL THE NEXT TRUCK DAY!!!!

Excellent 👌 I love this documentary; its girl power at its very best! I lived in Kenya with a Masai warrior and learned the customs and dancing. I dressed exactly as the Masai women dressed and travelled with the Warrior posing with him for tourists wanting photos of us. The beaded attire became my regalia and I embraced the Masai life as they all embraced me. I was so happy. But then I was told I must have a baby and that was a challenge I wouldn't endure. The rest is history. But I will always have a place in my heart, and fond memories of Kenya, my warrior and all of the Masai.

I dont understand their culture's obsession with mutilating a girl's private parts. There is no medical need for it, especially not for every girl. I realize that it is an islamic thing, but the unnecessary cruelty of it is so horrible. I am so glad that this village for the women and children exists. I wish more of those villages existed around those types of places. Blessings to those ladies. Im glad that they protect the females from being cut "down there".

It's not an Islamic thing either. True Islamic teachings forbid any cultural practices that are harmful to the body, mind and spirit, such as smoking, using drugs, etc. This includes FGM, unless it is an emergency medical necessity.
