Turkey was hit by a major earthquake a year ago, hundreds of thousands were made homeless. The reconstruction process is sluggish.
Ruined cities - and disappointed hopes. A year after devastating earthquakes in southeastern Turkey, hundreds of thousands of people in the region are still holding out in temporary shelters. President Erdoğan had promised rapid reconstruction, but this is still a long time coming.
Engin Aşkar: "We are hoping to resurrect this place, but sometimes I think we're just fooling ourselves."
Many earthquake survivors are haunted by trauma and fears, especially children. They long for a little comfort and normality - as they struggle to rebuild their lives.

As a Turk, I would like to thank all of you for your good wishes. But I must point out that these are not God's fault, but the fault of the government and President Erdogan. Trust me, i went to the region on the 2nd day of the earthquake and I witnessed the whole situation with my own eyes.

It wasn’t Turkey’s president who allowed the construction of these old, weak buildings during the 80’s etc. It also wasn’t the Turkish government who made black propaganda against the urban renewal projects which would have helped prevent these disasters from happening. Do your research better first. Its embarrassing.

@@theottomanempirewillriseag7265 You can't escape reality by twisting it. I don't know if you are Turkish but I know that the ruling party is responsible for the disaster. Not a single person felt guilty or responsible for the destruction and no one resigned from their position. This is a moral bankruptcy. No person from the government has been held accountable. Greed for money killed our people, not the earthquake. The government built so many buildings and they are proud of them but the opposition rejected or made black propaganda against the renewal of the old buildings? Don't make me laugh. Even so, they had the power and authority to make it happen. The opposition stood against so many projects but the government realized them anyway. So, the problem was not and could not have been the opposition. So many experts warned the local administrations but they didn't care. All they cared about was the profit their relatives or friends gained from the projects. And you know, not all the destroyed buildings are old buildings. There are hundreds of newly built apartments that collapsed during the earthquake. What's embarrassing is that despite all the things that happened, you and the people like you still try hard to protect the government and justify what they did and what they do.

Turkey has managed the earthquake much better than Iran regime. In Iran the victims don't even get a temporary shelter and nobody makes report about them. But the people themselves help the victims voluntarily. Which is sometimes very impressive and heart touching. I wish these people get their real home soon back. Amin.

It's heartbreaking to see this. I'm Syrian and I can relate to what they have gone through and are still going through. To get displaced, to get traumatized, to worry about the future on a daily basis, ... I understand all of that. But Turkish people are strong and I tend to believe that everything will get better very soon inshallah. May Allah make it easy for all Muslimes around the world wherever they are.

The government of Turkiye has done a great job to provide these amenities to affected people. Look at its neighbor country Iran, a few months before this event there was a smaller earthquack in northwestern Iran and still the government has not rebuild those houses, and people are living in tents for several months!

@@DWDocumentary4:40 At least thousands can live in containment blocks and temporary homes. Officials in Hawaii should have likewise quickly set up similar shelters for Lahaina residents, so everyone can begin rebuilding their lives, homes, and the economy, instead of just expending their energies on damage control, passing on the buck . . . and returning to business as usual.

So many countries rushed to help which was amazing but due to the bureaucracy, lack of leadership, no guidance, and no clear direction, assigning specific areas and tasks to the international rescue teams was a huge chaos. The military who had the bandwidth to help was kept away from helping which was a big mistake. The weather didn’t help either. False, baseless, unrealistic promises were made immediately after the earthquakes since the election was coming up. It is very disheartening to see so many are still living in the tents. I agree with the comments that it will indeed take at least 10 years to rebuild. And that's probably an optimistic, wishful thinking.

I am politically at opposition to Erdogan. But, there are unfortunate facts here. 390.000 apartments need to be built. Frankly speaking, there is no such a huge project in the world that needs to be completed in such few years. It is almost an impossible task. No one in the world can manage to do that within such a short period but the Turks.
