I'm Iranian, and I have 2 uncles who are living in US and Canada for decades. They always tell me that when they miss Iran, they simply go to Mexico 😁 Mexican culture is almost 100% the same as Iranian one (excluding religious and historical festivals). I'm amazed that how close we are, despite being located as far away from each other as possible. When you talk about Mexican social, political and ethical problems (besides drug cartels and violence associated with them), you are actually describing Iran. Impressive. I hope one day both Iran and Mexico get the literacy, social freedom, prosperity and respect that we deserve, and I really want to travel to Mexico!

l am Colombian and live in the US for 4 decades, my best girlfriends are Iranian..we think we are sisters born from different Mothers, our spiritual beliefs are insync, we share all our families, our joys an sorrows, we fight and make up much easier than with our own siblings, our Mothers are so much alike as are our families, we have unconditionally love for each other no matter how much time we spend apart everytime we are together is just as we have never been a day without each other. l love middle eastern food as well, even much more than my own!

The older women in the documentary reminds me of my mom. She got so mad at me when I showed any interest in boys and sex in high school, if I asked her any questions she yelled at me. I’m always grateful to my Mum for installing certain things in me at a young age that makes me whom I’m today. My Mum grew up without a father nor even education but she believed that men and women are equal. I remembered how she thought me how to treat women with kindness and love because they’re special, cook, clean and help with household stuff. I wasn’t happy with that training from Mum but until I grew up and moved away then I benefited greatly. I think for every society to live peacefully parents has to teach young boys women are treasure and they deserve special treatment. Thanks to DW we always get these wonderful documentaries. 😘 😘😘😘😘

men and women arent equal, but should be treated equal under the law
@vishwa098 Жыл бұрын
Men and Women aren't equal according to the Natural Law because Nature has given each of the gender its own roles and responsibilities. And your mother should've taught you to treat all living beings with kindness and love because every creation of God is special. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is what psychologists call as "Simping" for women - a behavioral pattern seen among "Weak" men where they will get used as door mats once modern women sense your kindness for weakness because not everyone deserves your love. Ever heard "Nice Guys" finish last ? Life usually teaches this lesson by the hard way.

The thing that irks me about the machismo prevalent in our culture is that it’s upheld by women, too! It isn’t just the men that resist change. The amount of shame and burden that abuelas and madres place on young women / girls just for the sake of carrying outdated traditions.

all that you think you are is culture. culture perpetuates from generation to generation. There are very valid reasons why men had been head of the family in the past however every leader has responsibilities as well as rewards that come with the hierarchical position. The glorification of individualism and the change in the balance of power as well as the loss of masculine identity is the reason for the abuse encountered in the relationships between sexes. All the abuse, crime and violence against women is the result of the fast change culture is subjected to. Both young males as well as young females need to be acutely aware of this in order to navigate life with as little suffering as possible. Unfortunately most of them are oblivious to these facts are mere victims of their circumstantial conditioning. Marriage is an outdated form of societal control of the masses and in underdeveloped communities owning the other or having a successful marriage is seen both as an achievement as well as a guarantee that "you're covered", a form of social insurance. This is why, jealousy is so common. You invest everything that you think you are in that relationship. In the same time males engage in competition with other males over females whereas females compete with other females for higher value males. It's a form of sexual canibalism. This happens because everyone is poor, both mentally, financially and spiritually.

Catolicism yes but it's also valid in Islam or other patriarchal society. Men had been in charge of families for centuries if not for tens of thousands of years. The whole status quo is being challenged now in the 21st century due to women's liberation by evolutions in science and economics in the workplace. The next challenge goes even deeper than this one. The next challenge targets the new generation that grow up in an emotionally sterile environment educated through TV and internet that lack role models and grow up into adulthood conflicted about their sexuality, identity and sense of self worth consumed by a world in which everything is a commodity to be bought and sold.

Great documentary, but it’s important to note that the notion of shame, especially relating to sex, was historically imposed on the Mexican people by the dominant Spanish Catholic Church during colonial times. Machismo was also brought by the Spanish conquistadors with their strict gender roles and notions of male honor and valor. All of these traits of “Mexican culture” are actually remnants of Spanish colonialism

I'm surprised about what your documentary says about sex in Mexico. I'm 79 years old and in my generation, there were many sex taboos but my younger brothers were not. They could live together, day and night, with their girlfriends, even with their parent's approval. And same-sex relationships are more open and tolerated. And it wasn't the way I was brought up. As an american, of mexican decent. I find that not everything in Mexico is based on traditional gender roles anymore. Like the rest of the world. Mexico is very progressive when it comes to LGBTQIA+ rights. I think that reflection, has broken the traditional stereotypes of machismo men and large family motherhood. Today we see single mothers, divorced parents, traditional marriages, people just shacking up without ceremonies. Singles living alone. An emphasis on having an education first. Through that diversity. People explore their sexuality that better suits their needs. Not based on what should be traditional, or what is culturally acceptable. After all, mexican culture moves within modern times too.

Very interesting to watch the intimacy culture of Mexico. I could not help but wonder at the love hotels--mainly how do they keep them from becoming brothels or worse?

Prostitution is legal in some Latin American countries. So is wife beating.

Taboos? I really doubt it’s taboo. All countries act like nobody doing anything wrong.

human nature, its pretty tough to see it because we share so many ways of doing things. if you slow yourself down and you will see a pattern of what you do, others in the circumstances and situation as you/they will pretty much do the same actions/reactions. recognize the pattern of behaviors then you can predict/see it in a better light. those old ladies, are living in a male society like every countries on this planets and some are worse off than others. the yelling of the older ladies/generation is because they are/were frustrated themselves and that is the only outlet they only knows.
