Meet the Germans: German Job Market

Landing a job is not an easy task, especially if the market is as competitive as it is in Germany. Shabnam Surita moved from India to Germany in 2017 to work as a researcher. Since then, Shabnam has juggled multiple jobs - in the social sector, academia, and journalism. This journey wasn’t easy, as she had to navigate the tricks of a completely new job market.
In this episode of Meet the Germans, Shabnam shares the tips she picked up during her job searching days, which she wished someone had told her earlier! Helping Shabnam out, her colleague Johanna Rüdiger shares the latest on Germany’s new employment law.

All the information provided is misleading. For non-EU job seekers, it is extremely difficult to find a job in Germany. To be honest, Germany has never been very open to non-EU workers, despite portraying a different image in the media. Non-EU job seekers face numerous challenges. Even if you manage to secure a job, it is still hard to survive and build a career.

That's the experience in my friends' circle as well. So many rejections on the basis of not living in Germany, even for people with German degrees! I thought this would no longer happen under the new laws, but nope. I don't really understand why.

This is true, add to that a glass ceiling for non-germans. The foreigners can only progress in job upto a certain level and progressing to become a manager or above is just not possible here, despite of the level of competency

@@ombagi1386 I think it also has to do with implementation on ground, and every new law takes a while to get fully operational. The Chancenkarte just launched, so I guess we have to give it some time to judge how well the country adjusts to newcomers and the other way round?

100% agreed, I am here in Hamburg with more than 9 years of experience in Manufacturing Engineer as Non-EU citizen, I am looking for a job for 2.5 years and they have many jobs, but not even allow us to go for an interview. I'm a German citizen who has lived in Germany for 14 years (I'm ethnically a South Indian) and I obviously has an EU citizenship. My sincere advise, stay in India or come back to India if you're in Europe. Work towards the well-being of you're country and you're people. Germany is in deep recession, that's why they're becoming desperate and posting all kinds of deceptive videos. Even the rules are getting easier because, noone is coming to Germany... We moved back to India 4 years ago, and you know what, we love it!! Will never leave my home soil ever again!

Last year I met one guy who got Masters in Engineering ( in Berlin) and working as a bike repairman ( in Hamburg). When I asked him why do you come to this job ( hourly rate: 13 euro) and you have a master degree. His answer was, "Language barrier". This is the reality here I understood after searching a job after 2.5 years. If you want to take the risk, take it. But I suffered a lot in my life mentally as well as physically. I do not want others to happen the same. I also will make my move soon.

The heartbreak is for German job market and not the job seekers. I have never seen Chinese C9 University and Indian IIT Grads making a beeline for Germany. Who wants 2400 net salary in a city where 2000 is basic CoL? Added perks are endless bureaucracy, racism, discrimination, housing crisis, horrible public transport, general air of aggression, lousy food, bad climate.

It's not simple, not simple at all. The German press has been advertising in Brazil for years: we need professionals in areas A, B, C, D, etc... I have a degree and postgraduate degree, I have 10 years of experience working with Information Technology. Months ago I joined in contact with the government, so I contacted the government, to go to Germany, I have to validate my diplomas (which are not valid in Germany) and I would have to learn German at a very high level (to learn German I would have to pay 500 euros per module), in addition, purchase a financial reserve of 12 thousand euros. In short, Germany says it urgently needs professionals, but its requirements are high enough to exclude 99% of them. And let me guess: after all that work, whoever succeeded will work in their area of ​​training and experience or will clean bathrooms? I think they should save the government money on false advertising. Stop deceiving us.

Yes, to get to Germany is quite a hassle. I can confirm, under B2 language level make no sense to come to Germany, except you found a company who supports you or you just want to do vacation here an get in touch with the people😃. I don't get the 12k €. This is the requirement if you want to study in Germany, to proof you can afford it to live here. For job seeker visa it a bit more than 6k €. I guess the best way is to find a good company, but ensure they are not some shady scam. Especially, if you are looking via an recruiting agency, it's important to check how reliable they are. A friend of mine from Indonesia also came 2022 here via an agency for a "Ausbildung" in a hotel. But the hotel used them mainly as cheap labor. Luckily, with some help my friend was able to get rid of this company and will study here now. And the agency wasn't that shady, but they just didn't care about the company they recommended my friend. And a short check of this Hotel showed very clear, it's not a good idea to go there. "Ausbildung" is a very good way to get a proper job later on, but even I'm as a local had to check how they will treat me. And in some areas like gastronomy or basic office job it's harder to find a company where they don't use you just as resource. But luckily, I'm working in IT / Software area. I wouldn't recommend to come to Germany directly for work, without long preparation (month or even 1-2 years) and getting some insides of some places in Germany and companies, where you could work. And the best is to get to know a few locals who can help at least a bit with the bureaucracy or general understanding of the requirements. But this last 2 sentence are a must, not matter you want to come to Germany, US or where ever. I'm a local and I had to do research for a few month to understand how it works the best for a non-EU for my friend. Anyway, good luck what ever and where ever you want to go.

Thanks on behalf of the team! Unlike the USA, German work visa doesn't need a 'sponsor', and often, employers who hire many foreign workers have special teams to help in the immigration process. But that's not the case for smaller organizations. And regarding the interview: I have always been interviewed by a panel of 2 to 4 people, but for research positions, that may not be the case.

1 million Ukrainian refugees acceptance in 2022 has made the German market contracted for non EU workers. Except for IT Jobs, everything needs B1 minimum. 6 lac nurses requirements with B1 is impossible for non-EU. 5 lac drivers is also impossible for non EU due to high license cost so already 1 million jobs are non reachable for non EU. Even after B1 German, 6-9% is the success rate for non EU graduates from German universities. Most companies only want Ausbuilding to get cheaper labour with a long commitment up to 2 years.

Certain roles in the US such as those in the aviation sector require security clearance and are only up for US nationals. Does Germany also have the same barrier, especially in the aviation field for roles such as Air traffic controller, Dispatch, etc?

You have to get security clearance of the state you live in and get it renewed every 5 years. But that is usually organised by the company you would work with. I can't remember if it is only available for German citizens tho. But I do believe that you have to be able to speak German.

This information is extremely unhelpful. I have a German degree and EU citizenship but I have interviewed with numerous German companies and never even gotten a reply. Austria also has AMS, they are going to push you into depression and further into unemployment. I have been fired by Austrian/German companies a total of at least 10 times and I was also severely abused by my German boyfriend. I don't recommend Germany to any woman from India

I recently got covid when I was unemployed, there was no vaccine available to us and after I got sick, the govt agency canceled my health insurance as well simply because I was sick and would be unable to complain

It is not worth traveling to Germany just to do the IU program. It is a distance learning program and you can do it online, plus it's a private university. Don't come if you have to quit your job.
