Hi, Chris. If you like dwm, you should test dwl (Dwm on wayland) to make the system ready for the future. I used dwm with X11 for many years, but have now chosen to try to stick to wayland, mostly because of multiple monitors, drawing boards etc.

After window manager hopping, i just kept getting back to Qtile, great documentation, easy to configure, has it's own run launcher, option to set wallpaper in config, it's own panel, great customizability and scriptability, a decent amount of widgets etc, excellent scratchpads, keychords, great multi monitor support etc. It's just my favorite.

A good introduction to suckless software is to install LARBS on a secondary drive or partition and boot into it with os-prober. It's not really just Luke Smith's configs it's more like a distro in and of itself because a bunch of people have submitted commits to it over the years. You can eventually fork it so it installs you're own dot files and programs but it gives you a good idea of how a simple UNIX desktop system should be structured.

lol, window swallowing is just minimizing a window so it's hidden. Also, Luke Smith, MentalOutlaw, and BugsWriter have good videos on minimal setups if you want some ideas

At around 13:00 when trying to locate dwm, you can use the command which like "which dwm" - it will say the exact path for an executable that is in one of the locations found in $PATH, so you don't have to search through all of them. locate is like "find in all the files in my computer" much too heavy for this specific task.

Or you could just read the output of sudo make install and see that the compiled binary is copied into /usr/local/bin lol

Pretty sure gdm just runs dwm from the desktop and doesnt source .xinitrc/.xprofile?

i gave up on dmw a long time ago.. so much work for getting bspwm functionality, while bspwm is basically as light weight as dwm.

It's really not that hard. If you have a minimum understanding of c is easier than bspwm

@@flarebear5346 you're right, but the amount of time it takes to get all the functionality it's just not worth it.. for me configuring the bar to look and act the way i like it just took way too much work.

If dwm was for wayland(dwl it s still wip), i would do so. But now sway seems the most wayland stable
