World leaders have been sending condolences to South Korea, after the country's deadliest aviation disaster on home soil. 179 passengers and crew aboard the Jeju Air flight were killed when the Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway at Muan International Airport and burst into flames. Only two crew members survived. Investigators have recovered both flight recorders as they try to piece together what happened.

A bird strike on a single engine has never left an aircraft unable to lower the flaps, lower the gear, lower the slats, control the other working engine. The raw videos of this crash show a aircraft not decelerating and the engines roaring at full power. If anything it looks like a failed go around after landing without landing gear. Has all the hallmarks of panic in the cockpit

It's standard procedure to apply full reverse power when landing. That's why the engines were roaring, it's cause they were in full reverse.

As an airline pilot (currently fly the B767), losing a single engine would never make you lose all hydraulic systems. There is a lot of mystery in what happened here; let’s wait from speculating until the actual facts come out. But a bird strike causing an engine issue would not in and of itself lead to hydraulic failure.

What if there were multiple bird strikes since it went through a flock of birds. Also why would the pilots land in the middle of the runway if they didn’t know their landing gear wasn’t down. It looks like they were being extremely careful on the landing which is why they ran out of runway.

I fly the B-737 for over 20 years. A bird injested by the engine would probably damage the hydraulic engine-driven pumps on that side, damage the engine and some internal components. We still have the entire electric hydraulic system to operate. Let's say they lost the entire hydraulic fluids; we can operate the Flaps electrically and the landing gear can free fall (no system needs to be in operation). I cannot imagine why those 2 systems were not activated. Let's wait and see the conclusion of the investigations. This could be pilot error.

This incident reminds me of PIA 8303 crash. An initial crisis (bird strike in this case) leading to pilots panicking and forgetting to lower landing gear under pressure. Also the landing gear warning may have been overridden by another higher priority alarm such as the GPWS. Of course this is only speculation on my part but the chain of events seems very likely.

First off, bird strike or not, the pilots should have flown a "normal" single engine approach to the longest runway into the wind, period. They did not do this. After an engine failure, the pilots should declare an emergency, and run the Non-Normal checklist for an engine failure, and then set up the approach, and then fly a single engine approach. Generally speaking, bird strikes do not actually cause a complete engine failure, you simply run the engine at a reduced power setting. Also, engine failure (if there was one), would have nothing to do with landing the jet with the gear up, no flaps, and no speed brakes. There are alternate extension methods for all of these systems in case of hydraulic failure. So, it looks to me like a "rush job" by inexperienced pilots, who, when confronted with an engine abnormal completely screwed every single thing up. The speed brakes did not come up on the wing after touchdown because the conditions for auto speed brake extension were not met. Gear has to be down, speed brake lever must be armed, and proximity switches on the landing gear must be closed (as in touchdown). The main wheels must has some spin up as well to gain speed brake deployment. Even at that, the Captain could have manually moved the speed brake lever aft to activate the speed brakes - something he did not do. NO reason for the flaps not to be extended, since there is an alternate extension method for the flaps, as is for the landing gear. As far as the reverse thrust activation, the reverse levers may have been pulled up and back to activate, however since the cowling must translate from closed to open, it appears that at least on the right engine, some of that translation took place, however since the weight of the aircraft was on the engine cowling, it could not translate to full reverse (3,000psi hydraulic system). The left engine cowling does not appear to be in the reverse position. SO, it's way too early to make judgements, HOWEVER the explosive crash was NOT caused by the dirt and cement wall at the end of the runway, it was caused by the pilots who made multiple incorrect decisions before the aircraft even started the approach phase of flight. The size of the fireball is proof that there was plenty of fuel on board as to allow the pilots to take their time, deal with the abnormal, prepare the cabin, and fly a "normal" single engine approach to a successful landing as the outcome. Certainly is a tragic event, and again, way too early to tell, but certain things are obvious, and the skill of the pilots (or lack thereof) should be carefully reviewed.

What I don’t get is how they, LITERALLY managed to screw up back to back, one mistake after the other, so COMPLETE in its wrongness. It’s kinda scary how each mistake, on its own, would have been perfectly fixable, but instead chained itself together with the next mess up. You seem rather knowledgeable on airplanes tho. Can you tell me this, what caused the panic in the first place? Is it true that a bird flew into one of the engines?

I heard from some retired pilots on YT that it's inconceivable that all three landing gears were not deployed had they manually released them. Is that true? That's to say, once the three levers were pulled, there was nothing to prevent the gears from falling into place. And assuming that one engine was still operating, it's conceivable that the plane could have been flown to a bigger airport.

Regular concrete walls would just get busted out the way, they might even help slow the aircraft. This incident isn't about a regular wall, there was a giant reinforced concrete earth mound built to hold up the little radar towers that help the plane know where it is. Normally, planes can bust through them like skittles, there's no need to make it into a solid object. This was more like flying into a mountain than it was a fence.

According to other witnesses and experts who viewed these, They had landing gears down for the first attempt. They brought the gears up for a ‘go-around’; And because the plane made a manoeuver shortcut to land instead of finishing this go-around fully, it suggests that there might have been an increase in distress such as further loss of power hence loss of hydraulics (when the pilot sent his Mayday) and there may not have been time anymore at this point to manually lower the gear.

boeing parts, software, avionics have long been subcon to india. The 737 series have alot of issues since then. This plane had the parts made in india. Back in october a senior official said that as an “interim measure”, it will ask Indian operators to notify their crew that rudder control system might get jammed inflight or during landing due to moisture that could accumulate and freeze in the actuator. Updates, another plane also boeing 737-800 also experience the same landing gear issue the next day at the same airport

I genuinely hope the global awareness of the horrid structure of the airport that caused the catastrophic accident brings the global awareness to South Korea’s opposition party’s sickening populism who forcibly launched the airport which in fact shouldn’t have been allowed in the first place with geographical and environmental reasons in order to gain their votes from the region for their election. This airport has been controversial for years within South Korea, nevertheless, the opposition party forced it to be operational by pouring tons of taxes covering the highest debt of all airports in South Korea because this is located in the region that supports opposition party(like California supporting Democratics). Every expert in South Korea voiced that this airport is not qualified to be built considering the location and many different factors, however, Democratic party of South Korea wanted this airport to be built no matter what for their votes. This is absolutely criminal and anyone who involved in this populist project should be jailed for their awful actions. Opposition party forced this tiny airport that is even barely qualified for domestic flights to be an International AirPort. The size, traffic and population of the airport with its location is absolutely not qualified to be run as an international airport with big aircrafts. I am urging people who read this comment to be aware that this is not just a mere unfortunate accident. This is an accident that could have been prevented if the opposition party of South Korea listened to the expertises in the first place. This is an expected accident caused by populism of opposition party of South Korea. At the moment, the relevant party involved in this case dares to put the blame on the airline in order to save their face and get rid of the possible blame towards them. This is absolutely not acceptable. The opposition party should take full accountability for their populist project and go to jail.

Another possible theory. One of the engines stopped operating after the bird strike, so with just one other engine working, the pilot had to fly at a faster speed just to stay in the air and keep that big heavy plane from falling out of the sky. Modern jet airliners have a feature that when flying above a certain speed, the Hydraulics used to lower the landing gear are automatically turned off so that the landing gear cannot be lowered during mid flight at high speeds. So, when that plane landed it was having to fly so fast with only one engine to keep from dropping too steeply from the air that the hydraulics were still disabled preventing the landing gear from being lowered. If the pilot had tried to slow the speed with only one engine flying that heavy of a plane in order to try and lower the landing gear, it would have dropped way too fast to even get the gear down in time before it touched down on the runway. In which case they had to resort to trying to belly land at a higher landing speed than normal in order to maintain a gradual descent.
