Russia refuses to hand back more than 500 leased airplanes | DW News

Monday is the final call for Russian airlines to hand back hundreds of commercial aircraft to their foreign owners. EU sanctions mean leasing companies have had to cancel their contracts to supply Russian carriers with planes. Leased planes make up the majority of the Western-built commercial jets used by Russian airlines. There are more than 500 of them, with a combined value of some 10 billion dollars. While these planes have been unable to fly outside Russia due to sanctions banning them from European airspace, many are still flying domestic routes. And lessors are losing hope of actually getting them back. Russia's transportation minister says the Kremlin will compensate owners for the aircraft, but there have reportedly been no negotiations so far, because any agreement would breach sanctions.

Other than that there is also a lot of coverage of topics like your's, especially by german television, but we call it documentation then. @@larrydickman5936 It's called perspective. What's our "perpetual interest"? This is German news and we actually are the only big western nation known for keeping the door always wide open for Russia, building NordStream and getting them into G7, making it G8. That has been our wish. We always wanted Russia to get more industrial interaction with Europe, cause we thought that leads to peace, as the concept of the EU was made for this purpose. Unfortunately Putin abused this for his more or less very own interest, against the interest of his people. So actually, the german interest in Russia was to make the average citizen more wealthy, to have streets and infrastructure. Why? so they evolve economically and don't depend on moscow for food and basic needs. Putin knows that poor people will always vote for him, as this promised stability so they don't have to fear worse times. But that's Putin's trap. Unfortunately he always managed to suck the money out of the system and stabilized his power. So in this case the german interest has been in favor of the russian people since the 70s and chancellor Willy Brandt. You should stop generalizing.

@@vapidshay well its actually $300bill+. But yeah... so they're never getting back those planes. Nor will the US ever release those funds in the foreseeable future.. Though it turns out the US actually gave Russia a license to use the frozen billions in paying the interests on their sovereign U$D denominated bonds (debt). Seeing as most of debt is held by Western entities anyway, it means the funds remain in house (in the western financial system. The license however has an expiry date (sometime in next couple of months) after which the US treasury has hinted it will not be renewed. A Russian offer to settle the payments in Rubles was soundly rejected. Aim being to force Russia into default leading to a downgrade of Russia's credit worthiness. All this in my opinion, is just the US clutching at straws. The sanctions (largest package ever put on a single country) don't seem to have any immediate significant effect on Putin's actions nor is it preventing them from funding the actual War and gaining more ground every day. Which should be no surprise as Sanctions have never been known to have any immediate effects significant enough to force a country to "behave". At this rate, by the time the sanctions have noticeable effects, the eastern half of Ukraine will be firmly in Putin's grip. And he's not one to let go once he's got anything he really wants.

Nope. The governments can't seize property in the West. The assets and proceeds still belong to the Oligarchs. They're just frozen. The Russian Central Bank's assets are also frozen, not seized. Russia and the private owners haven't technically stolen these planes either. They won't be able to be served and will eventually become death traps. It probably makes them feel like they're doing something to retaliate, but sanctions were designed to destabilize the Russian economy and cause a recession. That's all but assured now, and the West is aware of the costs associated with economic warfare.

Exactly! I fail to see how this is the fault of the Russian airlines or transportation industry. And I'm not supporting Russia or saying the sanctions shouldn't have been imposed, but just the airline companies have been put in an untenable position through no fault of their own. Even if they could arrange to return them, don't the sanctions mean that it would be impossible for them to get back the money they had paid in advance??? So how can they be expected to do that????

The west froze over €600 billion worth of Russian central bank reserves. Russia, with no more reserve currency, missed its most recent interest payment 2 weeks ago. It now has 2 more weeks before that missed payment goes into default. Then, Russian intererest rates will skyrocket, the ruble will fall much further and oil and gas revenues are then tagged. Those leased planes are maybe worth 18 billion. Add to that all other assets frozen by Russia and you might have 28 billion. ( €600 b vs €28 ). Think Russia got short end of that stick.

Fair comment and brave. The Russian airlines aren't accused of breaching contract. The leasing companies are unilaterally cancelling contracts under orders from their own governments. IF anyone is breaching contracts, it is the foreign lessors. Moreover, sanctions prevent the parties from even negotiating a resolution. Even if Russia today made an outright payment for the aircraft, it could be frozen. So let's hold off the 'theft' accusations, for now. Lessors can blame their own governments for potential losses.

Further more I wonder if Russia payed for the leasing contracts in Euros they got from Gas delivery.
