The war in Ukraine has prompted several countries to send weapons to Volodymyr Zelenskyy's government to help it defend itself against Russian aggression. For Ukraine, a prompt and plentiful supply of arms may be essential to its democratic survival. But the global arms trade is a hugely complicated - and controversial business.

Yes, Eisenhower warned about the Military-Industrial Complex, but he also was the president that set it up. Remember that the Cold War began largely under his administration and he was obligated to meet it with military potential. Remember, too, that it was France that precipitated the eventuality of the War in Vietnam which was basically a French-created problem that was handed over to the U.S. But also, when the U.S. ended its war in 1973 and finally withdrew all presence in 1975, millions of people died in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos at the hands of communists.

At this point, it really doesn't matter which countries are in conflict. The outcome is the same. Business goes on, the profits are paid in and the innocent suffer. The names of the ego-driven, war-waging countries are interchangeable. War is still the best and most profitable business in the world. In the 50's when Eisenhower spoke of the "Military Industrial Complex", it was still possible to discern the one from the other. Today the players have since become obscured, behind layers of mist and shadows. All the chess pieces have the same color. Blood red. And, the innocent wait to be crushed from both sides, because the enemy is everywhere. The 20th century was the bloodiest century in history and the 21st, is off to a god start to beat that record. Thank you DW, you still have the courage to say it like it is.

The common goal among the rich and powerful is wealth and power, not peace, with additional "must" of a much less populated world. They plan's to live luxurious lives with their families and best friends in already-built beautiful underground bunkers that can easily withstand a nuclear holocaust, with enough servants, supplies and beautiful homes for the net 100 years or more. People with less financial mans have built deep bunkers, without the bells and whistles, just enough to get them through rough times. It's a huge business. Although radioactive fallout can take as long as 10,000 years to leave the atmosphere depending on how close you are to the actual blast site, the powerful know where the blast sites lie; the masses don't matter (unless they're already working underground). If we mattered, we wouldn't be on the crest of complete obliteration. (Ever seen "The Book of Eli?")

On a national level we use law enforcement, courts etc. to keep violence in check, and of course access to good jobs and education helps tremendously. How do we scale that up on an international level? Unfortunately we see this right now, where it's not even possible to send blue helmets into Ukraine. The national level works because all states and cities abide by the same law but how do you make whole countries follow the same law?

As a RF and nuclear engineer, it's just hilarious we are still using bullets and missiles. Mix a few things on the periodic table, extract some from the other, and you have deadly weapon. Amplify a signal at higher power levels then tune the frequency and it will disarm so many things. These guns and missiles are definitely a weapon of the 1800s. And I would even say we've tapped into the things I've helped built and build back in the mid/late 1900s. The real weapons weren't even showed on this lol.

@@mtate02 Well it depends what you would consider a weapon. Electromagnetic is a weapon against electronics. It can shut down radio tower, basically anything electrical. That has been out in the field for a long time. I was contracted once because ATMs were being tampered with because these guys were using an electromagnet wave to shut the ATM and then when it cycled it'd pulsed out money. Basically, the ATM had really bad shielding. But yeah, nothing new. I think new technology is really in anti gravity type. We already have seen pulsed laser weapons and the design isn't that difficult once you understand the theory of op.
