Morocco does have regular earthquakes, but they generally speaking are not severe and mostly happen in the North (Nador has had a lot of them). The Moroccon villages are mostly clay houses, they are very sensitive for earthquakes. I have witnessed an earthquake originating from the Nador region, that was felt in the city of Tetouan where I was residing at that moment. I remember waking up at night to the sound of a truck, and little seconds later the entire building was not shaking but swaying back and forth. It was absolutely scary. My heart bleeds and worries for the wonderful people of Morocco who have always welcomed me so warmly💔

@sailedship6530 Жыл бұрын
The danger stems from the fact that Marrakech is largely a historical city, meaning it is meant to keep ancient structures. I don't know how that can be reconciled with earthquakes. That is a new reality, a hard one because if you rebuild it with modern structures it will cease to be a tourist attraction and thats its major economic activity. Nobody living there or even tourist ever heard of the word "earthquake" in that area of the world.
@vladnickul Жыл бұрын
it is a ancient city, but the (most) buildings are not ancient just poorly made, and even poorer repaired.
@telebubba5527 Жыл бұрын
Half of Europe was bombed during WW II and rebuilt using modern materials and insights, even the so called touristic structures. So that shouldn't really be a problem and will remain to be a tourist attraction. As you might have found out from the video, the last serious earthquake in that area was 120 years ago and those buildings did survive back then. Many of the buildings that fell apart were much older than that. Many buildings all over the world were not built to withstand earthquakes. San Fransico comes to mind....
@lolaali5158 Жыл бұрын
Marrakech isn't a largely historical city though. The medina is, but that's a small part of the city. There has been a huge building boom through Marrakech in the last 10-15 years or so. Most of Marrakech is new and modern (go 5 minutes from the medina and check out Gueliz. Or check out homes in Agdal or Palmerie). There are neighborhoods right now that look exactly the same as they did 24hours before the earthquake struck.

We all are aware of earthquake zone such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy, but not Morocco 😢. The most damage areas are in the mountains where the poor live 😢. When rebuilding, even modern technology is available, the poor cannot afford to include it it seems like they will have to move near cities to find jobs to survive. Eventually, when things are clear few years later, villagers will start to form again due to traditions and way of life until the next quake, hopefully over 100 years later😢 I was in a tour group from Marrakesh to the Sahara in 2017, part of the itinerary was walking around a village. I got permission to used a bathroom in a villager's home. It's just a 🕳️ hole in the ground and a huge container of water. I imagine that's how most of the villagers in the Atlas mountains live.😢 no Matter what their situation are, Moroccan still welcome tourist with smiles! I feel sorry for what they are dealing with. Imagine the fear in other cities such as Chefchauen, every home, building situated on hills

My prayers go out to all who are impacted, and my admiration for the first responders is immense. And i hope that the response and deployment plans that Morocco put in place since the last quakes in 2004 are effective; so far the coordination and response looks optimistic. I feel sorry for the geoscientist put on the spot and asked questions he is uncomfortable with because he’s a geoscientist not a town planning expert. Morocco has already updated its building codes and any building that is renovated or restored in the medinas of the old cities have to have far more seismic protection built in. New builds in rural areas are far stronger than the old ones, officially, but how well regulated that is on the ground I don’t know. We will probably find out in the inquiries that will happen. This is an absolute tragedy, but Morocco had already put in place measures to increase safety in areas that to all intents and purposes were seismically stable and hadn’t shaken for a millennium.
