"Regular" escape routes is likely insufficient when a big fire break out at night. There is a reason why many countries have a requirement for outdoor escape routes when the building has over a set number of floors. This building is huge as well as the number of potential guests, so two escape routes is pretty unfit for this building. With that said, it was also other factors most likely making this such a deadly accident.

As a Turk, I don't think so. According to both Turkish and EU standards, in buildings higher than 21.50 meters, escape stairs are not allowed outside of the building. Instead, indoor escape stairs which has smoke-tight doors that is durable for at least 90 minutes in case of a fire are more beneficial I think. But in this Kartalkaya case - sadly - both the doors and the stairs were not protective or durable for a fire, they were turned from normal stairs to escape stairs without applying any change.

There is no regular escape route in this hotel. Escape route should be positive pressurised to not let smokes in, doors shoul be closer and dont burn, there should be signs to show that route etc etc

Ministry of tourism has responsibilities on the hotel, and hotel is so fragile for fire because of its structure wooden and lacking proper fire alarming.

The owner may have bribed the fire chief for clearance. The fire could have started due to smoking cigarettes, as there are no strict building laws in Turkey. I booked a room in a 4-star hotel in Istanbul that was advertised as a non-smoking hotel. However, upon our arrival, we were given the option of a smoking room instead. Unfortunately, that's just how things are in Turkey.

Fire was caused by oil in the kitchen of the restaurant, not cigarettes. Been to many hotels in Turkey and laws are strict for indoor smoking. Sorry for your experience.

There ARE strict building laws in Turkey, the problem is the practice of those laws, not the laws themselves.

Even worse... In 2024, the hotel administration applies to an optional audit against fire. When the fire department found 8 lacking standard precautions, the hotel administration simply withdrew his application to audit!! And the authorities continued as if nothing had happened

It either had a sprinkler system installed and working or not. One was supposed to be installed in 2008. Have seen ZERO evidence that it even had one installed. Between eye witnesses and the fire protection certificate and fire fighters the answer to this question should be evident--we've been told nothing.
