You could be correct. I am guessing Merz wanted to eliminate the immigration issue from the election, which would of given the CDP a very strong position to form government. Merz own party members rejecting this hurt the CDP, likely causing voters to move from CDP to AfD. It was close 338 for, 350 against and 5 abstaining, so he could try again but I doubt it. On the other hand among Germans who want the immigration issue resolved, Merz has gained in stature. This could cause voters from other parties to switch to CDP, as its not AfD and Merz is trusted to at least try and resolve immigration. This is a real mess.

@@peterfmodel Why do you think so? CDU should gain, but AFD should loose. CDU offers right wing voters a real opportunity to have government which actively limits immigration. AFD will never reach make into the majority, no other party will work with them. So voting for AFD is just a thrown away vote.

@TTr3e If the migration bill passed you would be correct. But the bill failed to pass and immigration will continue to be an issue, which helps the AfD. The CDP could gain support from other parties, such as SDP, but as some CDP MP's did not vote for the migration bill some CDP voters will move to AfD. As for voting for the AfD, look at what happened in Osterreich - if AfD becomes the largest party all bets are off.

Why? CDU will get more support from people who want to limit immigration and might become dominant party in the Bundestag. With a little compromise he could have. But it was not about the contents of the proposal. He did not want to get the law because of what it would have been, but as a campaign victory. It is quite evident that the Merz Union did learn the lessons from international "conservative" populism and decided that to be the path to victory. It is quite absurd given that they almost certainly will win no matter what. Now they damaged democracy, probably strengthened the fascists (the public reaction might still prevent that maybe), and made negotiating the next coalition that much harder. Merz demonstrated how incompetent a politician he really is. Sadly he'll still become Chancelor.

Due to the socalled firewall the CDU will form a coalition with the SPD and possibly with the Greens, 2 parties which wish to continue with the current migration policy. This means that Nothing will be done to curb migration to Germany - a country which is in economic decline.
