The number of people with foreign roots who apply for German citizenship has decreased steadily in recent years. Now Hamburg's mayor Olaf Scholz wants to reverse that tend. He is encouraging people in the northern German port city to become German citizens. The Bavarian CSU is opposed to the idea, saying German citizenship is something to be valued.

People don't move to other countries due to citizenship, they move because they want to better themselves. Immigrants have the responsibility to integrate to their new society, however. On the other hand, they can also preserve their own culture at home.

German means to be from german origin. Nobody without german ancestors can become german. But you can become a citizen of the federal republic of germany. Remember, there are millions of germans in Austria and Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. They dont have the citizenship of the so called Germany. Its a metter of definition, Germany is where germans live, so the BRD/FRG is only one part of this big area.

I don't understand the CSU position at all - it doesn't make sense that someone would think that people who have lived in Germany for years, have jobs, obviously speak the language and can pass a citizenship test are somehow devaluing the German passport by becoming citizens. I mean, isn't that exactly the type of person you'd want to have as citizens? Productive, gainfully employed people who are a part of society already?! How is it 'handing out' citizenship when you have to prove you deserve to be a citizen?!

Germany has unemployed that could be filled and allowing large numbers of unskilled worker in just as every country in EU has done does not help the unemployed. Immigrants when in large numbers eat into the economy and take jobs and wealth from people in that economy. Do not say this is not the case. We are not talking about Phd or entrepreneurs being immigrants in Germany It is an unskilled work force we are talking about.

K. As a "half" second generation immigrant, and social worker in the current refugee crisis, I feel like giving a statement: I can definitely see where the Bavarians are coming from. Without wanting to diminish any ones reputation, or even insult them, the sad state of facts is, that quite a lot of immigrants in general come to germany because we have a high amount of freedom coupled with a low amount of duties. While there are many people who want to learn, do well and be successful, there are sadly just as many people who think that getting 1.6k per month for four children (1.6k is also the upper end of wages you can earn without having an apprenticeship/ or a bachelors degree etc) without having to work is more than ok. And it's this part of people who kinda spoil it for everyone. Just today I read a news article, suggesting to change the "rules" for getting state benefits. These include making people eligible for getting money from the state for being jobless, requires them to have had a job for at least 5 years prior to them becoming jobless. And while I really like the general idea, the problems and issues are more than glaringly obvious. The whole thing is a pretty difficult to navigate cluster-fuck, but I think being to nice and generous never helps(I#m not saying the Hamburg guy is too generous, I really can't judge that, all I wanna say is that every step of any direction in this situation needs compulsively careful planning.)

The problem with taking German citizenship is that you have to give up your other citizenship(s). Germany does allow dual nationality, but only in cases where it's someone who was born a dual citizen or is one by no choice of their own. While I'm not one of those delusional people that think US citizenship is something you'd have to be a moron to give up, I'd still have a hard time doing it because all my family and friends are in the US.

Yes and no. Depends on what is the take of the culture present in the country about immigrant cultures. In the USA you can say that since its called the "melting pot" where you can label people with rediculous notions like "unamerican" behaviour. In countries like Canada the concept is more of mosaic, immigrants are expected to know the languages but culturally they are encouraged to retain their own. Germany is between this two stances. You should study more before making absolute statements.

This man contradicts himself 02:20 to 02:27 and 04:45 to 05:10 First segment he says people who try to integrate should not become citizens, then in the second segment he says people should integrate before becoming citizens. The rules for becoming a German citizen are far tougher than becoming a US citizen, in the US you only have to live in the US for 5 years whereas in Germany its 8 years!

"encouraged to retain their own" This is a fallacy and anybody who moves to another country should adapt to the culture of that country. That is one of the reasons multiculturalism has failed it is trying to form a multicultural society when in fact it should be a singular concept of culture.

Of course these immigrants especially from Afghanistan, Pakistan and most of Africa, including that Ghanaian man would up at the opportunity to take German citizenship. They would have gone from having one of the most restricted passports in the world to one of the best, if not the best passports. Germany like many countries in Europe have gone from being largely homogenous in ethnicity, culture, language and religion to multi-cultural. For what??? And I thought Germans were smart...

That moment when the narrator mentions the ability to speak German as a requirement for citizenship, says this man from Ghana qualifies and then seeing that very same man being unable to speak a single sentence in German and requiring a translator - priceless. And regarding the CSU party, only 3 years later their opinion changed by 180 degrees and all of their former concerns were forgotten. Today, in 2020 people still wonder how a party like the AFD could raise to influence. I don't, I was there and witnessed it. I'm glad this clip exists, one day it will be one piece in a puzzle that explains how it all started.

I was watching another video about German women who prefer to stay at home and raise their children rather than go out into the workforce. They actually look down on working mothers as irresponsible. All well and good but these devoted mothers still only have one or two children on average, about the same as working mums in other countries or even less. So basically they've got the best of both worlds, stay at home with few children to raise. My point is that rather than complaining about how the population needs to be increased through immigration, why aren't these German stay at home mothers having more German children. Then there wouldn't be such a shortage in the workforce. I would have thought that this culture of stay at home mums would be the solution to the population decline.
@kamyll
@kamyll 8 жыл бұрын
+guitarfreakirl The opposite is true. Enough options to integrate work and family business leads to higher birth rates. Please compare countries like France, Sweden ... with conservative countries, like Germany, Italy, Japan ... And by the way: women always worked hard in the history of mankind. Even if they have had 5 children in average. The idea that men have to provide both the children and the women is quite new and comes up with the industrial revolution. Stay-at-home mums like today did not exist, because the work was exactly at home, in the garden and the fields, in the stables... Think about it. And don't mix up the economic status and role with the legal or social status.
@guitarfreakirl
@guitarfreakirl 8 жыл бұрын
+kamy3545 I am not against working mums at all I was just making the rather obvious point that Germany can promote higher birth rates given that they have such a high portion of mums not working. Why should immigration be the first option to increase populations. Surely more births at home should come first. If that comes across as sexist I'm sorry, it's not meant to be.
@benoni5104
@benoni5104 8 жыл бұрын
+guitarfreakirl Dnw it doesnt come across as sexist at all. It merely shows how you view the world and how racist u are. First of all every woman in germany IS and SHOULD be allowed to decide for herself if she wants to have children or not. Secondly sugesting that we wouldn´t have to rely on imigration if german women would "produce" enough children shows clearly that you consider imigratrion as a weakness/problem.
@guitarfreakirl
@guitarfreakirl 8 жыл бұрын
Ben Oni Immigration should always be the second option after natural population growth and thus implemented only when necessary. And if stay-at-home German mothers can take the view that working mothers are irresponsible then I can take the view that they're just looking for a comfortable life with few children. Of course you can't force women to have more children, all you can do is point out that the few that they produce makes for unsustainable population ageing.

I do however believe that if you are going to try and get a citizenship of a country that actually has a long standing culture, you should adapt to it, and not bring your own. If they are kind enough to let you in, join in "their" customs. I hardly think the man they portrayed in this video is a racist, he is just pointing out that fact that they are handing out citizenship to people who have no intention on actually becoming a German in the sense of culture and traditions. Laws and cultural norms are two different things. In ANY land, law precedes cultural norms. So no female circumcision is not something that would be accepted because that is against the law. About sharia law, thats replacing a whole judicial system, that simply wont happen. And if the sikh and jewish communities were insulted by islamic activity why were they not insulted by nativity? May be those cultural groups need to figure that out among themselves.

the criteria for getting a German citizenship are actually pretty high. So no it's not worth nothing. In contrast to the US where everyone who is merely born on US soil becomes a citizen you actually have to legally live in Germany for 8 years, have a stable income, pass a test and speak German. I think that these criteria ensure that only well integrated people can obtain citizenship. Those people that are being naturalized are actually the one that Germany needs. The poor, uneducated, with no job and bad German usually don't go through this program and thus don't become German citizens

I did wait five years before I even applied, and I sure had to do a heck of a lot of interviews, alone, all in French. If the person is law abiding and working and contributing, it is to the benefit of the place if their situation gets normalized. I was delighted. Uprated and shared.

Countries have borders. They also have laws. All countries (including the poorest) have border control, visa requirements for visitors etc. Citizenship is even a more serious issue. Germany is not a central station for the world's sick and poor.

The concept of muticultural society involves a two way acceptance of culture, where the host society accepts the culture of the new immigrant by encouraging them to enrich the host culture while the new immigrant is expected to understand and adhere to the language and economical norms of the country. Multiculturalism is thriving in most countries where it has been adopted, look up singapore. Cultural purists are generally simply xenophobes, and there is no place for those in germany.

I wouldn´t say that our system would collaps without the millions of arabic and african illegal immigrants. It is ways more plausible that our system will collaps because of the african and arabic immigrants. Germany doesn´t need as many jobs as you think. The fact is, we just neeed educated people. The jobs where you don´t need education disappeaar more and more because of automation Technology.

HI, i want to ask the germans, could i get your citizenship (i dont want it, im just asking), if my mother has pure german blood for few generations? Name of my grandfather was Ernest Schäfer and his parents Herbert Schäfer and Herta Hopfner, my grandmother is Helga Lösch and her parents Anton Lösch and Anna Görgner, they all sounds like typical german names to me, but, from the father´s side im slavic, but his surname came from ancient german name "Heimerich". but my grandmother from fathers side is pure slavic. So how the german state takes these crossbreeds? Like the case of mine?

There is a difference between naturalizing and being a German citizen by birth. It is possible to be a German citizen at birth by inheritance form a chain of German citizen ancestors. Ethnicity is not the issue, they must have been legal citizens of Germany. Austrian or Swiss won't do it. The question is complex and there are many special factors that might affect a given case. In general, a child born after 1974 to a German citizen is a German citizen by birth regardless of where they are born. Those born before 1975 could only inherit citizenship from a German father (unless they are illegitimate, in which they take the citizenship of the mother) [This may have been retroactively changed recently.]. There is no limit on the number of generations this inheritance can go. However, a child is only a German citizen if the relevant parent is a citizen when they are born. If a person loses their German citizenship then they have not citizenship to pass on to their children. This loss often occurs in three ways: (1) The person naturalizes as a citizen of another country. (2) The person lost their citizenship under the 10 years abroad law (§ 21 StAG 1870) which took the German citizenship of persons who left Germany between 1870 and 1904 and remained abroad for 10 years without registering with the consulate or holding certain German travel papers. (3) Treaties after the first and second world wars often stripped German residents of a given country (like Poland after WW1) of their citizenship if the stayed there after the war. Sometimes they were required to register to keep their citizenship by a certain deadline. If you were born after 1974 and if your mother was a German citizen at the time of your birth then you were born a German citizen. Was your mother a German Citizen at the time of you birth? You would apply the same set of rules to her except that, if she was born before 1975 the question is was her father a GC? Apply the same rules to him. In general, if you were born after 1974, and if you can show that you mother's paternal line German emigrant ancestor left Germany after 1903 and never naturalized as a citizen of another country, then she probably inherited German citizenship. which she could give you. If your mom's paternal line German ancestor left Germany before 1904, then you probably have a § 21 StAG 1870 problem. Unfortunately, § 21 problems can be very complex. If your ancestor left before 1903 but registered with the correct consulate or had the correct paperwork then they may have been saved from the operation of § 21 StAG 1870. This ignores the problem of postwar treaties that were particularly consequential to residents of the former eastern territories. If you have lucked out and the chain of citizenship was unbroken then you would need to file an application with the German government for a certificate of citizenship. They will want everything documented and translated and if you are going back thee generations, it will be very very arduous. the work of a good genealogist and then a German lawyer will probably be needed and the chances of success can be fleeting in cases based on great grandparents.

thx for the info, the problem is, my german ancestors are so called sudetendeutsche (egerlandische ppl) they lived close to the german borders in Czechoslovakia (since my grand-grand father) until now.From the mothers line, they are all pure germans but i dont understand to the informations in mothers birth list, because theres written: Nationality:German BUT Citizenship:Czech, so they are czech citizens with german blood.

49metal What if it's a case of Art 116 Abs.1 2. Alt. GG? Then they have the right to claim citizenship, haven't they?
@49metal
@49metal 7 жыл бұрын
Eric Pasquale Not so. Such claims are still perfectly valid. Prospectively, children born abroad to German parents who are both domiciled abroad and who were both also born abroad after 1999 only obtain citizenship if their births are registered with German authorities or they would be stateless. This is a very small class of children at present.

That may be your view, which you are entitled to, but what's the point in having carbon copies, that takes away diversity, individual freedom and renders everyone the same. Today, we're living in a globalised multi-cultural world, and there is not much anyone can do about it. It's happened.I don't thinkanyone shoudl be made to eat the same exact food, wear same exact clothes, have same exact thinking to live in another country.As long as each person's way doesn't harm the other, what's the prob?

But should a host culture be forced to introduce Sharia law or Female genital mutilation. At what point to you think a host culture should say no we will stick with our laws and culture. And some immigrant cultural activities may clash with other immigrant cultural activities. There has been cases in London were school districts cancelled nativities and replaced them with Islam activities. This caused offence to the Sikh and Jew communities in the area. Where is the line drawn.

The spaniards, portughese people or Italians are much more affable and sociable, so if the point is the integration, bear in mind that hardily you will get real integration with german people.
