Less than three months ago Alexei Navalny, current figurehead of the Russian opposition, collapsed from apparent poisoning on a flight between Siberia and Moscow. German doctors who treated him later, said he ingested the nerve agent Novichock. The Kremlin has denied any involvement, accusing the West of mounting Russophobia. Our guest this week from Moscow is Vyacheslav Nikonov, a member of president Putin's party United Russia and a lawmaker in the lower house of parliament, the Duma. Why is it that those who speak loudest for the Russian opposition run the risk of mortal danger?

As a German it's really sad to see this. We are not widely russophobic anymore imo, we actually really like the country, just not its politics. And playing the victim and using whataboutism like this guy certainly won't help that. I hope we'll see a friendly Russia soon - because Russia is not an enemy of us, it is an integral and central part of Europe!

@Felix Man sollte zwischen Bevoelkerung und Regierung unterscheiden koennen, gerade in authoritaeren Laendern, in denen die Menschen nicht wirklich eine Wahl haben. Es gibt nunmal Staaten in der Welt, die keine wirkliche Gewaltenteilung besitzen und daher koennen die Einwohner auch nicht voll fuer die Entscheidungen des Staates verantwortlich gemacht werden. Edit: Es gibt bestimmt nach wie vor anti-russische Vorbehalte, aber das nimmt mM stetig ab. Es sind eher einschlaegige Parteien, die nach wie vor die Angst unseren Nachbarn gegenueber zu schueren versuchen, aber das nimmt mit steigendem Bildungsgrad immer weiter ab.

As a foreign journalist, I’d be very interested to ask Putin’s goons some sharp questions. Unfortunately, there’s a high chance that I’d probably clumsily, accidentally trip and violently assault myself at my front door, or carelessly slip and fall out of a high window. Journalists with tricky questions tend to be very clumsy and accidentally severely injure or kill themselves a lot in Russia.
