Kevin Rudd was Australia's former prime minister. And well before that career, he was and is an academic, a Sinologist, a specialist in China. With a PhD on Xi Jinping. He is also author of The Avoidable War, The Dangers of Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping's China. Paul Rudd worries that Beijing and the United States might clash in a hot war.

I have to disappoint you. DW has nothing to do with the independent German media and doesn’t get anything from GEZ (or their new marketing names). DW is fully funded directly by the state through „real“ taxes and is the only government station left in Germany. So they are inherently biased (even if they would deny it ofc).

China works very hard to limit western reporting of it's actions, it is not surprising but you can find articles on their oppression of the Uighars in what is these days north west China and the Tibetans in what is these days south west China, their attempts to increase China's borders at the expense of India and it's protectorates by force and stealth, their aggression toward Taiwan and their ruthless crackdowns on dissent toward China both within China and overseas with all kinds of force. They also regularly send paramillitary fishing fleets into the waters of other countries and try to ram and sink any military vessels that try to stop them and have seized islands in the South China Sea from other countries based on recently invented claims that the UN has ruled have no historical basis in fact.

The real question is: who really is aggressive? If you have a far away country coming to your door and making an awful lot of military manoeuvres with their neighbouring vassals in the area, then you have to be prepared for a potential attack by these 'belligerent' military moves.
@gilbertosughrue3766
@gilbertosughrue3766 Жыл бұрын
China is aggressive. Military manoeuvres are a "deterrent", not a threat to China. China says it is a threat to gain sympathy. There is no danger to China, as long as China does not "force" 45 million Taiwanese to become slaves to CCP.

Well that's basically what Putin says. Regardless, I do think you have a point IF China were a peaceful country, a good neighbour, busy on improving the quality of life of its citizens. it would indeed be egregious to practice war games on its very borders, it would be like Canada running aggressive military drills, firing missiles over the top of Ireland. However this hasn't been true about China for over a decade. Today we see heavy militarism, internal crackdown on individual freedoms, centralization of all power, unparalleled surveillance and monitoring of its own citizens (not even taking about Xinjiang or Tibet), repudiation of its own pledges regarding Hong Kong, belligerent expansion in the South China Sea, harassment of India both directly and through vassal states Pakistan and Myanmar, harassment of Japan and South Korea through vassal state DPRK, bullying peaceful (and defenceless) small neighbours like Bhutan - I have more but let's just stop there!

I live in Taiwan and have read Rudd's book. I didn't love some of his prescriptions which essentially amount to appeasement, but I'm used to politicians reducing Taiwan to an abstract concept, a chess piece, etc. I think it's still worth a read, but I would keep in mind how often he takes China at its word when one should apply more skepticism. "Xi promises to take Taiwan by 2050" is treated as confirmation that it WILL happen, as if the CCP has always kept its promises. I think you can maintain peace without responding to everything China says, threatens, and demands as non-negotiables and absolute truths; it always has and always will be watered down with copious amounts of posturing.
