Ethnic Armenians fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh after the Azeri takeover have told DW that they feared being killed if they'd stayed. More than 70,000 people have left - that's more than half the enclave's population. The territory's leader says it will cease to exist as a stand-alone entity by the end of the year - giving up any hope of independence from Azerbaijan or being joined to Armenia.
Our correspondent Maria Katamadze sent this report from the Armenian town of Goris, about 50 kilometers from the border.

What would you say if you knew the truth that Nagorno Karabakh is one region where native Armenians lived their since the beginning of time and the division of the Urartu(Armenian) empire between two brother(kings). That's the history of the regions and the road that connects them. Azerbaijan and Turkey in modern history are just a few years old. Azeris and Turks are nomadic tribes that descended from Turkmenistan and invaded this whole area while killing its people from the Roman empire and Persian empire during the low points of the Roman empire. Armenians of Karabakh are given free passage to Armenia. 30 years ago we did not have this chance, many (tens of thousands) were killed on the roads trying to get to a safer place around Karabakh. Now as justice is restored, armenians are officially given an opportunity to stay and live with us, but they have every right to fear - for what they did 30 years ago. What gets me is that something happened, we can't say what exactly, for 100,000 people to flee from Azerbaijan. Not gradually over years but over the last week. Is Putin behind it? But after 30 years you still felt like settling the score and attack the region multiple times, even though Karabakh has always been predominantly inhabited by Armenians throughout history, and enjoyed autonomy status. So of course they are forced to leave. They don't feel safe. Why gloss over that fact? Probably because your 'President' is a crook. You don't have free and fair elections in your country, almost no freedom of press or expression, and as long as you're fine with that there is no way you'd ever hold him accountable after learning the truth.

The real atrocities were in the first Karabagh war which claimed 30,000 lives and made nearly 1 million refugees in their own country. They were ethnically cleansed by ARM using USSR/Russian 336th battalion to invade a near defenseless neighbor who had just kicked the Russian army out and declared independence not before the atrocities of bloody January by the Kremlin. Why? Geopolitical games. Kremlin was using Karabagh as a physical barrier to Oil pipeline from AZE to TUR. The pipeline went thorough Georgia instead, where Kremlin attempted yet another ethnic war against an ex USSR republic. The real losers were the Armenian people who missed out on billions of $$ in revenue. Today, ARM is the economic sick-man of the region. Armenians were used as pawns by Moscow, used, then discarded when AZE corruption money far out weighed anything Moscow could mine from the occupied territories.

And then during 24 hours anti terror operation armenian lobby again cried about killing civilian people and " etnic cleansing" with no proof. Then Azerbaijan requested armenian people not leave the Karbakh they can live with the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan but they left because armenian separatists forced them to leave in order to blame Azerbaijan in the future 'as a ethnic cleansing and genocide". United Nations, USA and Europe (except France and intention of France is clear) did not mentioned any violation and etnic cleansing or genocide. But armenian lobby did not agree with the speech of UN and USA because everyone all over the world are wrong except armenians. I would suggest armenian people to be fair but it will not make any sense.
