Great video. Thanks for the instant demonstrations of “why X works or not”. For me, those instant what-ifs are super helpful for my learning as a DDK.

That isn't 10 min with 10 second byo yomi. It is 10m+10s Fischer time and it is actually quite good. It means you get 10 seconds added every move, which ends up being a much more flexible time system for Go than traditional byo yomi. If a game went a whole ~250 moves, then 10+10 should come out to around 40 minutes. 5+5 would be around half that. The idea is that it provides an average of 10 (or 5) seconds per move with some amount of time frontloaded. Some moves will be longer and many will be shorter, so it tends to work out quite well. The problem with standard byo yomi is that if someone uses all of their 30 seconds for every move, the game can go on really, really long. And they are encouraged to do so because otherwise they are literally losing time that they could have spent thinking. Edit: Oh, I realize it actually shows those estimates on the screen. At least I calculated correctly!

I'm a big fan of Fischer time, but 10s is still too little and feels very rushed when you get low on time. 12s is much more manageable

I think it's worth mentioning that "you don't have to kill" is only really true in the first half of the game. If, after they make all their small groups that you didn't kill, they invade inside all your strength that you accumulated from the early game, and you somehow don't manage to kill that (which is always possible given that reading is never perfect), you will usually be in a lot of trouble or behind in points. You might say that it doesn't count as killing since it isn't fundamentally alive to begin with, but again, we're amateurs. I've definitely had games where my opponent lives small and then goes for some shot in the dark invasion by the end among all my strength. And many times the game does hinge on whether or not they manage to live there. You might be able to have a "no kill" policy for basics and get all the way to 6 Dan when playing people below your rank, but for us, playing people at our level, knowing how to kill absolutely does become essential in my opinion. Especially once they get enough moves in and their shape goes from "fundamentally not alive" to "fundamentally alive" after just a few more moves. Just my two cents. Great content as always.

only if youre big moyo based like this game was. to avoid it, keep yourself more territorially inclined.

@@dwyrin I'll try to focus a bit more on that. Usually I find myself borderline forced to go for the center because of all their early invasions.

Great video. I am not sure if I would have made the kill in the center though

I'm 9 kyu and everything here looks really doable xD Gotta learn to actually make it happen

I for one am NEVER upset when you use simple easy-to-find moves to kill a bad invasion. That's very much in the realm of basics. You aren't reading multiple moves ahead, just reading shape. Even a dd-kyu player can learn to do that, even if they do get it wrong some (until taught; by watching how it is done!). It could be good to better explain why your eye-killing moves are where they are, when you find them practical to play in a dd-kyu/sd-kyu game. Sort of "explain the basics" of it. Full disclosure though; I am roughly a 5kyu by rank, but can often out-read 2-3 dan players. I'm 5kyu mostly because I enjoy playing faster than I should, and so I make game losing blunders on the regular. And because I do not follow joseki very well, because I like to experiment every time I play. And because I'm 5kyu. 0=)

They should specify "Fisher" in the UI! Why does the dev put chess times on a go server and even without any explanation?! It is also not explained what "flexible" means well enough. It would be enough to put some background highlight to indicate which times it considers! And is "fixed" still broken? Very disapointed by this update. I hope he updates it. The prevailing Ukraine flag is also unnecessary for a global go server...
