"Dyeing Dollies", Customizing Action Figures "From the Junk Pile" Series: Episode 7

"From the 'Junk Room Floor'" This is my experiment at dyeing action figures. I take two Classified and two Action Force figures and try my hand at dyeing them with Rit Synthetic dye.

hey sorry if you mentioned it but be careful of dyed figures rubbing on others. i had some dyed parts in a bin and they stained everything they touched! sealing is a good idea.

Glad you enjoyed it! One commenter did recommend that the figure gets a clear coat just to seal the dye. Keeps it from rubbing off onto another figure. Great little thing I didn't know..Credit to Pants.

Nice! Yeah i messed up when i used black RIT dye on my tiger force outback (i was making an old man punisher). I didnt get the synthetic and it was just sliding right off the plastic! And before that i used nail polish remover to take the tiger off his shirt. (Started chemical melting) Talk about getting it 100% wrong! I plan to do it over with another one someday, since they are cheap now. Great vid! Dye can be a fantastic way to avoid paint rub in joints. 👍

Cheers! I've been trying and usually failing to dye plastic for years! Usually for 1/6 custom builds so now knowing about this Rit Synthetic dye is very useful!

I've done two alley vipers and all of my python patrol officers. Some things I've learned from doing this is that 150 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for dyeing paints and the torso don't take dye like the limbs do, put the joints in the furthest position and then after some time move them to the opposite position to get a good dye job and silicone moldable earplugs are good for the skin sections too.

Great Video! I was looking for videos on dyeing figures specifically, because i wanted to dye those winter Valaverse figures!

Thank you for the comment and I'm glad I could help! Please note the pinned comment about doing what I didn't show in the video, and that's doing a matte, or gloss if you prefer, seal over the figure to minimize potential dye rub onto other figures..or hands if they get moist. But overall, it was pretty effective...time consuming..but those results are pretty good...I'll put up pics on my IG this week.

I find it works a little better when you take the arms and legs off. The dye gets into the joints as well.

Thanks that's what I did for copperhead and vympa. I didn't feel like breaking down the pin joints for the video as it was my first time experimenting with the dyeing process

I really do like the way they turned out but it does seem like it's more work for same result not to mention I would have to buy a pot and colander and spoon and tongs specifically for doing that and I'm a bit of a messy person so I don't trust myself not to make a mess in the kitchen and my wife would kill me so I like it but I think I'll stick with painting 🤗🤤😬

Used RIT powder in on ABS the past and it was not good. Will try the synthetic liquid. You got some great results. Using the Valaverse snow guy as a blank was a good idea. Thank you for making this.

Thank you so much for the comment. Yes, I do need to refine how I "block" parts from the dye..practice works...Yes that white body takes dye really well.

I dyed the Action Force arctic troops a few weeks ago but Andy gave them an hour so the torso was still white but easy to paint. I dyed the arctic gear too and they came out well. But the guns didn’t change but I guess it’s due to the little time I gave them. I dyed Shockwave too and he came out a nice tactic darker color. I guess next time I’ll give them more time. The visor on the arctic troop won’t change color so the clay is not needed for protection for an hour dye. Still easy to paint and touch up. Very nice video for the next dye job I used, probably crimson red.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah I did about three hours for them..still not perfect, Interesting that the goggle color didn't change for you. I am assuming you used the graphite in your custom? I have a bottle of the Crimson Red...I may try that on some other arctics that I wanna dye. If you do yours in red, I hope you will post them on IG and share your IG tag.

I was told that the due fades over time. A customizer said that after a year the figure he dyed black was now a light purple gray. Curious what you have observed

I haven't seen much yet...but as another comment said, putting on a top coat would help seal the dye on the figure

cool demo bro as I expected, it s a mess.... I was curious, as the pyth officers and troopers will surely get cleared at some point, they re a disaster I wanted to know if there was an efficient way to dye them dark blue as the reg troopers dye is a mess usually, it wears off with rubbing or just time soooo, yeah, maybe paint is better, but then, there s the Cobra logo, it gets destroyed for sure it might be worth it if I pay $5 per fig.... otherwise, this costs money, and sooo much hassle to do but hey, if you want a black exclusive storm shadow... this is the ticket lad! to turn green into purple is not my idea of success.... it means that you can expect just about any kind of result... nah, this is not the way to go for me, it has to be precise and predictable, and this is just not it. here in Can, we ll never get figs at $5... $10 is about the best I can expect add another 10 for the equipment, and it s not such a great deal I ll probably do better in the used market, and with REAL reg troopers and there s also that 3 pack vipers, I d change the officer into a reg viper colour scheme, I ll have to find another way to get there. but hey, it was worth it to try and me to watch, but I just feel like you don t show the worst of it, maybe you feel foolish to show how bad it came out, as you don t show much afterwards nevertheless, I ve seen enough to know I m not getting into this dying business myself, lol. ...so now you know... ha, ha! don t mess with dye kids, it s not worth it for reg figs! but maybe you ll find a better solution in the future, one that really works, but for that, one has to try, and hey, once you do, it ll be a great success! good show bro
