This was fun. I buy my cotton yarn for weaving in bulk from Georgia yarn company and have just started dyeing with rit dyes. It has been a blast and so many fun color ways to play with! I live in a very humid climate, so wool only gets worn for maybe a month out of the year. The rest of the year I'm in lovely plant fibers

Rebecca, I think this is a wonderful success! I too, agree with the pouring of a little blue on top was a great addition! I do think that by not washing before adding the fixadint this time , did help a bit! I think that the washing was relatively not that bad considering that you did have a lot of dye in the pot (which was a good thing-gave excellent vibrance in overall color)The colors are awesome! Thanks for Sharing!

I have plans to try using the fixative on some red/pink/navy shirts in the future. I am still curious what is in the fixative. THe website says that it could be used for wools, too...

Hi Rebecca! Now I am thinking that putting a lid on your pot that it can be making some difference to the heat working as well. Would you try covering the pans you use to see if it has an effect on the yarn? Maybe use two pans, one covered and one not to compare them. It may show if investing on one or two lids will be worth it.
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Putting a lid on a pot can definitely trap some heat and help keep moisture from evaporating. I will frequently cover my pots because I have the lid around, but I do it less now unless I'm steam setting the yarn since I don't feel like washing the lid. (truth!) I've covered my steam pans with tin foil a couple of times, but I haven't found it to make such a difference that it was worth doing it more. Likly if I was going to do SUPER DUPER low immersion then it would make sense to use a cover so the moisture wouldn't evaporate.

I know this is an older video so I hope it can still get a response. I'm going to be using rit black. Is there a way to make it grey?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried to make a gray with Rit, but in theory if you use less dye then you should get a gray. (It may need to be a LOT less) Some black dyes are various tones of gray when diluted so I don't have a good estimate on this one.

I think I can do this one! What does the salt do? And is there anything I can use in place of the color fixer? I’m excited to try!!
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure what the salt does. I've read that it could slow the color absorption, but I honestly don't know why it is needed with cotton. i'd rather use it than not, though. As for the color fixer... I'm not sure if there is another replacement since i"m not sure exactly what it is. Jacquard i-dye has a fixer, too.

What does the salt do when using rit dye? Do u not use vinegar when using rit dye? And do I have to have that rit color safe stuff? Thanks doll 😁
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why the salt is required, to be honest. I use it because it is part of the manufacturer instructions. I'm also not sure what is in the color fixative but I use it since I have some on hand. Sorry this isn't the best answer!
@KrissD.4 жыл бұрын
ChemKnits Tutorials lol 😂 so u haven’t tried doing this without the salt? Would vinegar work ?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
@@KrissD. i might have tried it without salt but I'm not sure. Vinegar won't help to dye cotton so I wouldn't add that. I add vinegar when using rit to dye wool, though.

Is the salt a substitute for soda ash? The colors are gorgeous.

Laurel Wolfe I was wondering the same. My thought was: "What's with the salt? What did I miss?"

If we wash this yarn after knitting or crocheting will it loose colour
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
You might get some fading, yes. There is a color stay fixitive that is supposed to help the colors stay a bit longer. I have done some tshirts that have washed a dozen + times and there was some fading at first but then the colors have held up pretty well.

So you used the regular Rit Dye and not the Rit Dye More?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The regular rit dye is for natural fibers like wool and cotton. Rit Dye More is for acrylic and polyester.

Hi Jodie, I used liquid Rit dye for this 100% cotton yarn. FOod coloring won't work on cotton yarns, unfortunately. (I have a video showing this later this weekend.) You can find liquid Rit dye at big box stores like Michael's and Joann's
