In my experience I haven't seen laundry soap cause any bleeding or reduce color, but I haven't done a soak (I have done a swatch and put it through the washing machine.)

Beautiful colorway! Is this gel food coloring?

It is the Wilton icing color, so I don't htink they call it a gel food coloring but it is a more gel like consistancy.

Rit dye used to make a color remover, that medical people used to remove blood and other hospital stains.

I tried that once! Unfortunately it really damages wool so I don't recommend it.

I put oxyclean on a handmade cotton doilies that I loved. Left overnight and next morning my doilies was totally gone in the areas where the oxyclean had been soaking. 😢

The cotton dissolved? OH NO! I've never had this happen with clothing, but I 100% don't recommend oxyclean on hand made items without doing a small test first. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Oh I don't know. I wonder if it would be different if you hadn't heat set the color first I think the goal here was to see how wash fast food coloring is on yarn.
@kathleenmcquade314 жыл бұрын
That was very interesting Rebecca! It was not a test I would have thought of. Especially since I would not have afforded to wreck the yarn. Now, could the Oxi yarn have been overdyed?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it could be over dyed, but the texture was a bit off.

Just a FYI, I used food coloring to dye yarn for a hat for my daughter. It looked gorgeous. A few months later I hand washed and hung up on the line to dry for about 2 hrs. The sun bleached all color from the hat. I had no idea food coloring does not stand up to sunlight.
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
Oh no! :( I absolutely recommend avoiding direct sunlight for long periods of time with food coloring dyed items. I haven't ever seen sun bleaching that fast in person, but you're not the first person to tell me that. (for me I've observed it over months left on a windowsill in direct sunlight. but this was a dry toy vs something wet.) From what people have told me, it seems to be more of a problem when things are wet for whatever reason with the reds. I have some food coloring dyed accessories that are 5+, 7+ years old that are still super vibrant from normal wear. But if washing them, they've just been in indoor light. I also have an afghan that is always around in my living room and the food coloring has held up really well. www.chemknits.com/2010/02/10-hour-afghan-pattern-my-remnant-throw.html
@Waterstitchdown6 жыл бұрын
ChemKnits Tutorials good! Maybe it was just the sunlight. The backside away from the sun looked fine but the other side looked bad! lol I will definitely not hang handmade stuff up in the sun anymore. Lesson learned :(
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it is the wet that did it. I did some sun dyeing with reds in direct sunlight (although through glass of a mason jar) and they seemed to turn out okay. I really do need to do some fading tests.....
@Waterstitchdown6 жыл бұрын
ChemKnits Tutorials that would be awesome!
@kathleenmcquade314 жыл бұрын
So, is this to be translated to, that its probably not a good idea to wear items, such as a summer top, that has been hand dyed in food colouring, out for a summer family picnic that will probably endured the whole day in the sun? Will it lose its colour in spots, or possibly the complete garment?
@ooohlaa135 жыл бұрын
i think the oxy when bubbling initially was maybe opening pores and breaking down the protein, ergo the slime? it left a heather quality i like which sometimes i seek because it matches better when trying to combine with natural dye projects which always look too washed out when combined with regular saturation. i think it could be utilized as a "technique" or tule to tone down unwanted saturation or brightness. i get a lot of near felting using patons classic wool which i get 50% off at box stores w/coupon due to limited funds but I do want to try knitpicks at some point for better quality. I love rose and pink so I love the result.

You often show how the dye 'breaks'. What if you didn't want it to break. Would you just submerge quicker?
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
To avoid breaking, you should start with no acid, cool dye with lots of water, add the yarn quickly and move it around a lot. The purples might still break some, but it would be less extreme that what I show here. Heat it up, and then add hte acid.

Can you bleach yarn to create a acid dye look
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using bleach on yarn, I think you could damage the fibers. However, in about an hour I'm going to do a livestream with Rit color remover to see what will happen. ;)

Hmmm... I'm not sure if the fiber types would make a difference or if the oxyclean is just degrading the food coloring molecules.

I've been watching for the past month or so and keep wonderijng why you use vinegar instead of citric or ascorbic acid powder? I think it would take up less space, cheaper, and none of that nasty smell :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
Habit mostly. When I started out, I either used citric acid in KoolAid or vinegar since I didn't have any powdered CA on hand. I haven't swapped because I'm still more comfortable with the amount of vinegar to get the effects I want. Playing with CA more is definitely on my list, though.

It’s easier. Vinegar is everywhere and the smell doesn’t bother me.

Have you ever tried breaking green or orange food dyes?
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
I have! A lot of oranges are just yellow #6, and therefore won't break. I've found that oranges with more yellow in them (say WIlton creamy peach) will break nicely, but others I've mixed are hard to tell if we're seeingbreaking or not. Greens with a lot more blue than yellow break (think teal) and then some brownish greens will also break that have a mixture of a lot of stuff in them. A true grass green (mccormick's green) didn'tbreak for me, but I also didn't push it very hard.

So brave to risk destroying perfectly lovely yarn..."What if you get a stain on something" - good reason to keep all of the extra yarn at the end of a project. Carefully unknit the stained part and reknit it with the spare yarn! Poor yarn went through such an ordeal...but at least it didn't actually melt or disintegrate the yarn. Color changes are likely due to Oxyclean actually being a bleach - an oxygen bleach as opposed to chlorine, but still a bleach.
