Jonins are elite ninjas that are actually rare in the Naruto universe. There were famous Jonins in the Leaf Village such as Kakashi, Might Guy, Asuma, Neji, and Kurenai, but there were also some obscure ones. Still, you'd be surprised at the number of Jonins a Hokage would have available at any given time. In this video we're going to estimate the amount of Jonins a Village would usually have.

Its clear that Kishimoto changed the setting mid story, from a village that seems to be hidden, with a small population of fewer than 2k of high especiallized military assets that would do expensive work for the Daimyo and other very rich contractors, while most of the fooder job was left to mercenary(like Gatou guys), to become a army of fooder, the village having more than 10k+ ninjas is a plot hole if u see that the registration of the Naruto class is aroun 12k, so in like 80y of village they produced around 12k ninjas, but for the war to work Kishi simple pulled 80k alliance from his ass and broke the whole worldbuilding he had created.

Not that he really care midway through. The Naruto universe was supposed to be populated by all kinds of people, and the hidden leaf village was, well, somewhat hidden and with a little population, but at some point the whole world became ninja only and he put some samurai just to say that there's some variety aside from ninja (they play no significant role in the story whatsoever)

None of the stated numbers for any of the villages make any sense for arguments sake let's use 1000 and 10000, as numbers of ninja that the leaf might have at one point yes I know the wararc numbers make even the 10k number low, relatively reasoble amount of recruitment would need about 10% of the force in New recruits every year not entering the academy not graduating the academy entering the ninja forces which tells us that to have 1k you would need about 100 new ninja a year for 10k about 1000. In narutos year we had 9 these numbers are so hilariously unbalanced the leaf could probably afford to maintain a force of 100 ninja with those numbers and that 10% is assuming peace time with very few losses, so is probably a bare minimum. Considering that things going badly on early c ranks for genine teams is at least implied to be not uncommon losses in peace time are probably still not insignificant. Meaning a number nore like 20% is neccaserry to just maintaine force size not increase it. Let's again assume trying to maintaine a force size of 10k and use the ratios of narytis year as a basis for academy graduation and acculy entering the force ratios. We have near enough 100% academy graduation all but naryto in that year and he ended up being pushed through any way. And then a 66% failure rate so to see 2000k ninjas added to the force every year you would need a graduating class of 6000. If you have class size of 30 a little big but still managble class size for teaching children and you would need 200 classes all this implies that there is 0 dropouts along the way not a reasonable assumption. Impossible to say how many drop outs you would get on average with out data I do not have at the moment but the number would almost never be 0. The scale of the leaf as depicted simply could not handle or find 6000+ kids a year. If we jumped back to the other number I put up of a force size of 1000. You would only need 600 kids a year still far to many kids a year for the size of the leaf and the academy as depicted but a number you could get to with only a few changes. One the academy as depicted is flat out to small they need either more buildings or make the one they have bigger. More grounds to. As for any one assuming kishimoto changed any thing about scale midway through is almost certainly wrong. Most writers just have no good idea about scale they write or in case of a mangeca(no idea how to spell this) draw what they imagine as appropriate then at some later point went numbers become relvent they assign numbers that fit what they imagine they need for the story ignoring how big or small there early described locations would need to be to reasonably have those numbers. Scale is just something most do not trouble them selves over till it slaps them in the face. Back to filling those numbers for one sec getting the number of children that yhe leaf would need is not accualy all that hard you after all have a whole country with many towns city's and villages in it and theoretically you could draw from that whole country. So number of recruits could be handled even if they leaf can't produce that many internaly add in that the leaf could have far less civilians then we imagine it having. You have gennine in mass to do a lot of the general labor industry could be else where and extended family of ninja could run most if not all the shops thus means you do not acualy need a lot of civilians that are not imitate family of the ninjas of the village. Food is grown else where not in the village production of goods except for some highly specialized stuff will also be done outside the village. This means if the nation really us supporting the hidden villages you could have a surprisingly small settlement for the size of force. As for the academy I got nothing there it is just flat up to small and there is no hint of all that any training of ninjas is done away from the ninja villages accept for a handful of individuals master and apprentice zabuza and Haku come to mind but this realistically can't amount to a very significant number so I will ignore it as statistically irrelevant. Nothing about the leaf we are shown other then the academy size directly stops any of what i just said from being true. Nothing shown to us makes it true either. So if you want the numbers presented in the story cannon can't answer you with out a retcon.

Which is crazy because he absolutely did not need to make it that much people. He knew he would never be able to portray all that, specially with the type of groundwork he had done. So why not just make it more like 16k so you could have 3k per village and an additional thousand from the samurai.

As much as I hate to say it, it's actually one of the very few things Boruto does better. The modern Leaf village actually looks like a proper city with a large population without having to write in that many more characters. ... or any more characters at all for that matter, because none of them except Boruto, Sarada, and Kawaki might as well exist lol The Rain Village is very cool and somewhat of an exception to the rule though.

I have the solid impression the vibe of the settings was changed mid story to accomodate a "war", given what we saw of the Village (and allowing us to say all the other villages are relative the same in popolation). Once would can think the Leaf village had a total popolation close to the number extimanted Leaf Ninja sent to the war.... I am talking of sheer magnitude not actual numbers... Like the Leaf village look at best like a place where dozens of thousands of people live, not hundred of thousands or millions (numbers required to allow them to have 15K Ninja avaliable). So probably while both canon, I don't think using this kind of estimation is useful to actual understand how common/uncommon the Jonin are...Unluckly is the best we can do. Anyway the Jonins ninja have the be rare almost by definition because they are considered an elite force, they are the outliner not the norm, if they are relative common... the whole definition of elite would fall off, I mean if people as capable as the average Jonin are common... that would be the definition of chuunin.

Four things to note: -First Shikaku Nara was the Jonin Commander, which unlike a Sannin is an actual rank in the Konoha military and thus might be counted as apart from the rest of the Jonins. -Second, even though you counted people who seem to be retired from day-to-day field missions for the most part and have more administrative roles, you didn't count other retired ninja who are almost certainly Jonins who can come out of retirement in times of great need a la Chiyo - I'm talking about Danzo, Utatane, Homura and Torifu Akimichi (though his last appearance was in the time of Naruto classic iirc), though I guess it's hard to picture them taking orders from Tsunade. -Third, there are a few Jonins not from the manga, including a few filler ones and even canon characters like Itachi's jonin sensei from the novels. -Fourth, there are a few confirmed Jonins that appear but are never named (IE: in the meeting of senseis before the Chunin exams), the most notable probably being the Jonin sensei of Kabuto's team. Other than that, yeah, Jonin's a pretty exclusive rank -- hell if you go by early Naruto it's pretty heavily implied that, if you're a jonin, you're a badass a la Zabuza or Kakashi, so someone with enough of a reputation to have cool title in the bingo books, like 'copy ninja', 'demon of the Mist', 'seven swordsman of the Mist', 'beautiful blue beast of Konoha', 'twelve guardian ninja', etc, etc. Makes you wonder what all those background jonins are like.

I’m pretty sure that the Anbu are made of primarily Chunins. A lot of Anbus are picked for their high potential but before they can mature that innate talent. Plus the Anbu seems to prioritize their ability to carry out heartless assignments. When it comes to the Jonin in Naruto they seem to be like the Magic Captains in Black Clover where the Jonins are Psuedo Hokage level or candidates to be Hokage. Even for Azuma this would be consistent as he was killed by Hidan when the Akatsuki we were introduced to were supposed to all be Kage level.

The Nara clan are pretty smart and are probably gifted at politics and padding their applications for moving up the next rank, never mind being the most prominent and leadership-oriented of the three noble houses (Ino-Shika-Cho). To add to this, plenty Aburame are probably in some type of special tasking force like Anbu, which may explain their lack of Jonins. They're so versatile and valuable, it may be preferable to keep them doing unorthodox tasks outside of the limelight. The Hyuga are probably amongst the most politically influential, and appear to be the most prestigious, and have an emphasis on being a shinobi more than any of the other clans- they come across as perfectionists, so it's not shocking so many are Jonin. As for Tsume Inuzaka not being a jonin- just understand that like Might Dai and other characters, being promoted in the military isn't always neat or fair and your career will be different from someone else's. Due to politics, quotas and timing, etc there could be a number of reasons Tsume isn't a jonin yet- never mind possible personal issues like conduct for example.

To be honest I find it quite normal, I am actually more surprised when the head of a clan and the strongest clan member is the same. As the head position is ereditary while the acutal ability of a ninja is not. Given an example, in the Hyuga clan, Hinata would be the head of the clan also if she will not have the skill to be a jonin, while her cousins (or potentially sister) are more powerful than her and Jonin material. TLTR: It's more ridicolous the fact that people conflate "personal power" with "political power" in this kind of story. The way the Hokaga is chosen to me for example is truly ridicolous, the head of a village should not be the strongest ninja but the best at handling a village (this is not an issue of Naruto only of course)

Obito-Sensei by Ser Serendipity confirms this as Obito in that fic is a Jonin and is at least near/at Kage level. I would estimate that thousands of shinobi who had AT LEAST Jonin-level, if not Kage-level potential died in the Great Ninja Wars, and even though you could argue that without war there would have been less incentive to get stronger, the Great Ninja Wars and unrest that occurred in the aftermath hurt the Ninja Villages more than they helped-by a lot (this is also a major plothole with the Uchiha Massacre, as the Leaf Village was effectively crippling itself by eliminating numerous Chunin, Jonin, and even Kage-level shinobi-unless the Leaf elders expected Itachi to only eliminate part of the clan before himself dying (enough to prevent a coup and force the Uchiha back into line, but not enough to wipe out the Uchiha and cripple the Leaf Village’s military)).

@@azureascendant994 Further weakening the shinobi villages are the policies various Kage put in place surrounding the noble clans, specifically in regards to which jutsu various clan heirs actually learn, and thus how strong they can realistically get. Specifically, the problem is that the Kage allow clans to get away with ONLY teaching their clan-specific jutsu and not anything beyond that (and even limiting their heirs from learning techniques outside of the clan-specific ones)-which drastically reduces the village’s military power, and weakens connections between the clans and the village. The explanation DygoKnight gave (in Rewriting Naruto Part 34) that the Hyuga don’t allow their own clan members to learn techniques outside of the Gentle Fist (outside of basic academy techniques) is a perfect example of this, as if it is true then it utterly cripples the Leaf Village’s military, because it effectively ensures that numerous shinobi with Kekkei Genkai equivalent to the 3 Tomoe Sharingan (or even a very weak Mangekyō with only one dojutsu and no Susano’o) will only ever reach mid-high Jonin level when they have High Kage/Sannin-level potential (a Hyuga with genjutsu, shadow clones, body flicker, and mastery of at least 2 nature transformations IN ADDITION TO Gentle Fist would likely be a very high-Kage level shinobi). Given the rather desperate circumstances the Leaf Village found itself in when Tsunade got the Hokage’s office, if I were Tsunade one of the first things I would do would be to remind these clans and their leaders (especially the Hyuga under Hiashi) that they are Leaf Shinobi first, and order them to allow their clan members to learn techniques OTHER than clan-specific ones. Furthermore, I would tell the clan leaders that if they were to refuse to comply with said orders, then I would have the clans they represent stripped of noble status due to refusing to pull their weight.

It is probably more than 23, probably closer to 50-100 even though that's still not a lot- every year the academy graduates students- in naruto's class there was 30- and some years it could be more or less. But if naruto's was an average that would mean 10 jonin without teams need to be available every year to take students, and assuming the 33% pass, 3 of those jonin would not be available the following year unless all of their students became chunin or died/quit. So those three would need to be replaced. Based on the series, even though the rookie 9 is very talented it still takes til after the time skip for almost everyone to become a chunin- so assuming a turn around time of at least 2-3 years before those jonin go back into rotation at a minimum. Even so we also never see the jonin that took teams take another team again throughout the series, so it is possible that jonin are numerous enough that it is only a requirement for them to ever take one team to train and they never have to do it again or they get a reprieve of many years before having to take a team again.

Factually, Kumo and Kiri should be leagues ahead of the other villages in quality. Kumo has the best standard training, all their shinobi are at least decent and can use kenjutsu to a decent level. Standard training means it's easier to mass produce a strong baseline and with a strong baseline the ones who stand out can only be stronger than with Konoha's weak ass baseline (or Iwa who only has a mass of civilian level untrained genin with a royal family and a few body guards who're the only competent shinobi in the entire country and who are the definition of quality over quantity...because they actually use all the resources at their disposal for themselves while keeping their subordinates weak and easy to dispose of, maintaining their power with little difficulty). Kiri has this constant witch hunt of the kekkei genkai, so the shinobi who survived the hunts on each side are powerful and cruel for the most part. Kiri is the closest to a ninja village in the Western sense, it's isolated, in a place where it has massive terrain advantage in a giant diameter around it, its' shinobi are told how to kill efficiently (the spots to target enunciated by Zabuza) and use tricks to get to their target (hiding in the mist, which no other village has an equivalent of, and then there's Kakashi's hiding like a mole which he forgot to use against Zabuza despite being his best way to deal with him, and that he already knew in the bell test). Kimimaro is the expected product of his environment, "survival of the fittest", and he's a total monster like Kisame but with a completely OP kekkei genkai that was only limited due to his sickness or he would have been an endgame boss after the time skip.

So how does the team squat system work? I mean for every 3 genins, there must be a jonin supervisor. In Naruto’s graduation year, there are 10 teams, which mean 10 jonins. Suppose after 5 years, the genins grow up and don’t need supervision anymore, then there should be at anytime 50 jonins for only supervision task, not to mention someone like Guy or Kakashi only lead 1 team and never lead another team. So technically about 150 jonins must be always available for the leading genin teams task, which is super huge in comparison to the number of jonins

The numbers definitely don't make sense when you consider how many chunin and up participated in the Allied Shinobi Forces vs how many shinobi get promoted during a typical chunin exam vs how often a chunin exam is held vs how many visible jonin and chunin seem to exist in the Leaf. In the Part 1 chunin exam, only 4 ninjas got promoted to chunin exam from all participating villages combined, and only 1 was from the Leaf, and no one above rookie status received a promotion. The chunin exam is supposedly held every 6 months, but we've seen that sometimes it has gaps where it doesn't get held for like 2.5 years. So you'd figure that, in a 20 year period, the Leaf village would experience about 40 or so chunin promotions. Perhaps 10 or 20 or them would d*e during that time period, so there would probably only be about 25 total chunin or higher between age 15 and 35. It's likely that a lot of chunin never hit jonin due to lack of talent, so of those 25 who are chunin or higher, the breakdown is probably about 8 jonin 17 chunin. Some of the Five Great Nations like the Sand have even less ninja personnel than the Leaf does; while others perhaps have many more. But there's no way that the Allied Shinobi Forces would add up to 80,000. 250, I could believe. For there to be as many chunin as there are in the world, the chunin exams should have many more candidates attempting it, and many more promotions handed out every cycle.

originally One Piece should only be a 5 years story in shonen jump. but the editors managed to stretch it to +25 years. for example in chapter 1 Shanks losing his arm was the editor's idea, and adding 7 warlords and 12 Worst generation pirates is also the editor's ideas

I don’t remember but kakashi originally was said to be 9 or 10 when he was jonin because he’s young than everyone in his class and was the youngest jonin in part 1. Obito Gai Rin and others were 13 when kakashi became jonin not kakashi himself.

If we compared the ninja ranks to sorcerers, then jonin would probably be Grade1, tokubetsu jonin semi grade 1 or 2 and chunin grade 2 and probably grade 3??

You forgot to mention ricky, a jonin in the same batch with kakashi but never appeared in his flashback probably because he is an outcast and never socializing with others. And despite he is a jonin, a supposed to be elite ninja, he only shows in the screen either being captured (Kakashi flash back) or getting killed (pain attack).

There are elite chunin or special chunin who could easily be Jonin but dont upgrade to Jonin. Remember the forever genin and Naruto....so their official rank could be deceptive of their actual power level. What rank is Sasuke? A genin?
@Clouded-Logic
@Clouded-Logic Жыл бұрын
If Genin are nearly always placed in three man squads with a Jonin teacher, then you would assume you have a little more than about 1/3 as many Jonin as Genin (at a given time). Granted if I were to look at the info on the villages from an outside in perspective without any of the information I have (IE the leaf has *this* many ninja under it), I would assume that the leaf is the main head quarters of the village, and that they have outposts and such where other members are stationed.

Chunins lead genin teams too. It's just that Chunins don't happen to be instructors (as far as I've seen) and that's why we rarely see them in the series. However, during a mission (without a goal to learn) Chunins are often leaders.
@Clouded-Logic

@@DygoKnight pretty sure ebisu was a special case. Chunnin were (to my knowledge) only shown in more public type rolls (school teachers/exam proctors). I don’t any other cell leader was said to not be a jonin off the top of my head.

Remember chapter one and Naruto vs sasuke power fight in the of part one and madara power was being hinted in part one and his fight with hashirama was established in the end of part one so and titans fight and a massive water dragon so please remember that and stop complaining about power creap it's important to increase the stakes so people will care so if Naruto didn't have these types of fight it will not be pupuler and Shippuden fight are way pupuler than part one especially the war arc it's not perfect but still great and don't forget everything that happens in Shippuden was established in part one

Dont forget that both the akimichi and hyuga are of the 4 noble clans too. So them having a few more jonin makes sense. Jonin s are really rare. Hokage guards are not jonin. They are usually special jonin with exceptions from the anbu. Also most likely not all anbu are pure jonins. Most of them would be special jonins. Even in the foundation where Danzo literaly gathered the elitest talents of the village and trained them since childhood not all were jonin. For example Sai was not exactly jonin rank yet. He was high chuunin in shipuden but was not considered jonin just yet. So not all anbu are jonin either. You made a fair assesment od the number of jonins. I think at best there were only a few more that were never introduced at best. Kurenai was a generational genius too. She became jonin and her best jutsu was genjutsu and she was not from any prominent clan either. Kakashi and Minato too (even though Kakashi s father was also a genius).
