I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m 67 I used tanning beds as soon as the came out . I was ok until I hit 50 then I got a spot on my eye and chin. I went to my Dermatologist and he told me it was skin cancer. I traveled four hours to a doctor to have it cut out . I was lucky as far as I’m concerned the Dr got it all removed. I haven’t been in a tanning bed since. My skin has dark spots all over my skin especially my face so now I do everything to take care of my skin. To the young people out there you can go for years and and it’s seams your skin is ok and looks good but wait til after years of tanning say about in your late 50s then it takes a toll on your skin & you can’t reverse the problem.

So being in the sun and most natural thing ever gives you cancer ? It's to do with lack of omega 3.

I owned my own sunbed in the UK for years before moving to Spain in the mid 90s. I think my sunbed use might have helped my skin prepare for the Spanish sun, as I've never had any skin related health scares in 35 years.

Some people who are pale will use fake tan & tan beds, and some people who are darker will lighten their skin, bottom line is the grass ain’t always greener, love the skin you’re in guys.

I strongly disagree with the red head lady! Any exposure to sun or to sun beds is increasing your chances of getting a skin cancer! There is no such a thing like safe tanning I am afraid…. I was a huge fan of tanning in my early twenties until I got the dark spots all over my body. No sun beds and good sun cream everyone!

How does it come down to "the relationship between the state and us". No, it comes down to the fact that sunbeds increase your risk of skin cancer needlessly.

The problem is the salons that are not compliant and don't enforce responsible tanning compliant sunbed salons will always show that they are a member of the sunbed association also sunbed technology and safty has gone a long way since the 90s 10 minutes on our beds is like ten minutes in the Mediterranean sun

Sunbeds aren’t good for you I agree! You should be able to choose wether you want one or not however, maybe the advertising should be changed to show the effects of skin cancer, just like cigarettes!

If people want to use Sun beds, that’s THEIR choice. They know the risk. Should we ban everything that’s dangerous? Drinking, driving, eating unhealthy food, leaving the house? The UK is the biggest nanny state there is. One life, enjoy it.

As you said, Bob Marley's melanoma was in a non-sun exposed area, so why does everyone insist that sun cancer is always caused by the sun?

I'm South Asian (Pakistani), I always adored my brown caramel skin because it makes me stand out and I have always cherished my skin color. Unfortunately throughout Asia whether it's South, East or West Asia having fair skin is considered beautiful while in the West having Tanned/Brown skin is considered desirable and exotic. I don't understand why do they have to go to such extreme levels just to change the shades of their skin tone can't they be proud of there skin tone or is it just they are inferior to there skin colour and wish they had much of a darker skin color.

"............or is it just they are inferior to there skin colour and wish they had much of a darker skin color?" Very good question, which requires a 'Collective psychological analysis' to comprehend fully.🤔

@@joelgoldsmith4747 The subcontinent basically (Pakistan, India and Bangladesh) never ever had this issue of colorism until the British colonised the subcontinent and made people to believe that fair skin and light eyes are beautiful and exotic and having darker skin is considered ugly and frowned upon. This doesn't only affect the subcontinent itself but also Africa has a problem with colorism as well. Yet today the European race praises tanned and darker and goes to extreme levels of tanning injections, sun beds and sun bathing just to get that golden brownish tone even though there are dangers of doing these sorts of practices. I also believe that the reason why majority of English people have an issue with their skin color is because inferiority like I said before and jealously. Racism and hypocrisy plays a role in this they calls us xyz and p*kis but love and envy our brown skin, food and culture which I don't understand why even though we are just human beings just like everybody else. Btw I am in no way of being hateful towards white people but explaining skin inferiority towards English / Europeans.

The government doesn’t need to ban using sunbeds they just need to make it law that the salon needs to warn them when people go in to use them. It will also save the NHS a lot of money if they don’t have to treat as much skin cancer every year.

Really appreciate this debate as both sides were able to express their viewpoints. Personally, I am sick & tired of being told that we should all hide in our basements and fear the sun. There are multiple cases of skin cancer found on body parts that are not exposed to the sun. Unfortunately, there seems to be no effort to determine the cause of skin cancer in such situations - eg, under Bob Marley's toe nail - as everyone assumes it's always the sun / UV rays.
